Composed amidst the military dictatorship in Brazil, the lyrics portray the disillusionment of a repressed youth, but also speak of hope and struggle for change. Lyrics: I don't want to tell you, my great love From the things I learned on records I want to tell you how I lived And everything that happened to me Living is better than dreaming I know that love is a good thing But I also know that any song It's smaller than the life of anyone So take care my dear there is danger around the corner they won And the semaphore is closed to us that are young To hug your brother And kiss your girl on the street Was made your arm, your lip and your voice you ask me about my passion I say I'm delighted as a new invention I will stay in this city I'm not going back to the backwoods Because I see it coming on the wind Smell of new season I know everything in the living wound From my heart It's been a while I saw you on the street hair in the wind young people gathered on the wall of memory this memory It's the painting that hurts the most my pain is realizing that although we have done everything we did we are still the same and we live we are still the same and we live like our parents Our idols are still the same and appearances don't cheat You say that after them No one else showed up you can even say that I'm out of the loop Or that I'm making up But it's you who loves the past and who doesn't see It’s you who loves the past and who doesn't see that the new always comes Today I know who gave me the idea Of a new awareness and youth Are at home saved by god counting vile metal my pain is realizing That despite having done everything, everything everything we did we are still the same and we live we are still the same and we live we are still the same And we live like our parents

OMG!!! Elis is a legend! She was performing in a tv show in 1976. Brazil was going through the military regime and many artists used art to go against the dictatorship. Some singers were exiled and many others persecuted, so as Elis. So the anger in her expression says it all.

Its also important to say that this song was written by a great brazilian compositor named Belchior. He used to write about the brazilian injustices, social inequalities and stuff, as well, of course, lots of musics against the dictatorships in all South America. Elis Regina and Belchior were part of this great artistic movment with other artists such as Chico Buarque, Aldir Blanc, João Bosco, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil. Another beatiful and powerful song against the dicatorship that Elis sings is "O Bêbado e o Equilibrista".

you nailed the pronuciation, this video was captured on Teatro Bandeirantes (Bandeirantes Theater) part of her show Falso Brilhante (Fake Brillant) where she tells of her life, carrer, history and criticizing the military dictatorship (1964-1985) in a circus themed environment (a bit of joke). The music Como Nossos Pais (Like our Parents) is a mix of Jazz, Bossa Nova and storytelling. Elis Regina has some others great songs like Aguas de Março, Fascinação, Romaria and Tiro ao Álvaro (with Adoniran Barbosa, this song was censored by the military dictatorship because has incorrect words but was proposital like the caipira, people from countryside, speaks)

SHOW CONTEXT : In 1975, Elis Regina premiered a season entitled Falso Brilhante, with the objective of telling the story of an artist's life, from the discovery of talent to the peak and public criticism, without leaving aside the criticism of the Brazilian military dictatorship. All this in a somewhat circus environment. because of that the clothes. The kind of music you're wonder about called MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) or Brazilian Popular Music. This kind of music emerged in the 1960s. People usually say that it was a musical style reacting to the dictatorship, but it is a mistake, because MPB was a left-wing political response to Bossa Nova, and it began to be developed even before the military coup in 1964. Over time, MPB lost much of its political contour and became purely aesthetic. As for Elis Regina, one of her record producers, Roberto Menescal, reported that she was so amazing that the songs she recorded on her records were done in one take. She only needed to record once and it was perfect, so you get a sense of what an extraordinary singer and performer she was. Elis Regina had perfect pitch. Another singer, Rita Lee, said that she was amazed because Elis Regina was able to tell the musical note of a door slamming, or that an object made when it fell to the floor. About this song, she was part of the show "Falto Brilhante", which ran for three years in São Paulo, where she lived. There were 257 sessions of this show, which had a circus aesthetic. Another curiosity, Elis Regina and the musicians had only two days to record "Falso Brilhante" album. Elis, as always, recorded almost everything in one take, but the song "Velha Roupa Colorida", because she was sick and her voice tired, and she couldn't record this track in one take. So she needed an extra take. Want to understand how and why, search on youtube for "Velha Roupa Colorida" and listen to the beauty of interpretation.

Brazil had a dictatorship from 1964 to 1985, this song talk about the youth living under an oppress regime, and their struggle and disappointment that nothing change, but also about the hope of a better future. Elis Regina was very vocal against the regime, she died young at 36, supposedly from an overdosed, but she died under mysterious circumstances, the ambulance took a lot to get to her apartment and the hospital records disappeared, that's why people believe that the militar regime kill her.

It's interesting how gringos always thinks she is talking about man... almost if this is the only subject for a woman to be angry about! This song is so damn sad to me, it makes me cry every time I hear because it reminds of our terrible past. Elis Regina was one of the most brave person to exist. She stood up for democracy and used her image as a famous singer to inspire young people to rebel against dictatorship in Brazil. While so many artists, journalists and intellectuals were being perscuted, arrested, tortured, murdered or exiled, she wasn't afraid to go live on tv and sing about it. What a powerfull woman!!!

This is taken from a TV show called Fantastico (Fantastic). It's a variety show that blends science, news and arts. It began in 1973 and the first few years it was really good TV but with time it got watered down. It's still on every Sunday night in Brazil but I no longer watch it. This song was composed and recorded by an artist called Belchior. Her version is more famous than his. Elis Regina already had a long enduring successful career whilst Belchior's was just beginning. This clip was probably from 1976, if memory serves me any. 1978 tops I would think. Belchior is talking about the illusion he feels the 60's Youth Movement is when up against the reality of Brazilian dictatorship in the wake of the 70's. And Elis interprets this magnificently. The puppets in the back as well as the weird clothing choices for the TV band came probably from the Costume Designer hired by the TV station.

Its in 1976, Brazil was in a military dictatorship. Her friends, singers, actors, colleagues were being pursued, tortured, imprisoned. Elis Regina's interpretation in the song "Como Nossos Pais" complements the message and context of the lyrics remarkably. Her powerful and expressive voice brings forth the intensity and emotion of the search for identity and freedom during the military dictatorship. Elis Regina uses her voice to convey the anguish, disillusionment, and dissatisfaction present in the lyrics. She emphasizes the parts where the lyrics express the sense of oppression and disbelief, employing variations in volume, intonation, and dynamics to create an atmosphere charged with emotion. At the same time, Elis Regina's interpretation also reveals a certain hope and resilience. She conveys the determination and strength of a generation facing adversity and striving for change. Her passionate delivery and authenticity reflect the struggle for freedom and the pursuit of a better future. Elis Regina's interpretation in "Como Nossos Pais" goes beyond merely singing the melody and words. She deeply connects with the message of the song, conveying the complexity of the feelings and experiences lived during the military dictatorship. Her voice and artistic expression are powerful instruments for expressing resistance.

The most amazing thing about this song, besides the fact that the singer is amazing, is the lyrics. It was written as a song/poem, aiming to go through the censorship of the dictatorship. It is full of "subliminals" that made apology for the dictatorship and ended up passing through the filter of the military. The song has a hint of advice: it's as if someone older is talking to someone younger. And it is a criticism of the inertia of youth, which has accommodated itself when it shouldn't and has stopped questioning.

As Lived Our Parents (translated into english) I don't want to talk, my greatest love, About things that I've learned from my vinyls I want to tell you how my life was like And about all that betided me To live is better than dreaming . I know that love is a pretty good thing But I also know that any place is smaller than anyone's life For this reason, watch out, darling, The danger is waiting around the corner They won and the way is now barred to us, the youngs. To embrace your brother and kiss your girl in the street is what your arms, your lips and your voice are made for You ask me what's my new passion I say I'm wondered at all this, it feels like a new invention I'm going to stay at this city, I'm not coming back to the backwoods Because I sense the smell of the new season hovering in the wind I can learn anything through this wound, that lives within my heart It's been a while since I saw you in a street With the wind blowing in your hair, Along young people, all joined together. Hanging up on my mind's wall, The memory of this is the frame that hurts me most My pain is to realize that despite all we have done We are still the same as before and live... We are still the same and live as lived our parents Our idols are still the same And the appearances don't disguise it at all You say that after them, no new idols have ever existed You may even say that I'm out-of-date, that I made up all this But it's you the one who loves the past and can't see that new times will always come Now I've learned that the man who taught me of a new conscience and youth is now sitting at home, guarded by Lord, counting coins of vain money My pain is to realize that despite all we've done We are still the same as before and live... We are still the same and live as lived our parents lyricstranslate.com

Como Nossos Pais: I don't want to tell you my great love From the things I learned on the records I want to tell you how I lived And everything that happened to me Living is better than dreaming I know love is a good thing But I also know that any corner It's smaller than life from anyone So take care my dear There is danger around the corner they won And the signal is closed to us that we are young To hug your brother And kiss your girl in the street Is that your arm was made Your lip and your voice You ask me about my passion I say I'm delighted Like a new invention I will stay in this city I will not go back to the wilderness For I see it coming on the wind new season smell I know everything in the living wound From my heart It's been a while since I saw you on the street hair in the wind young people gathered On the wall of memory this memory It's the painting that hurts the most My pain is realizing that even though we have Done everything we've done we are still the same and we live we are still the same and we live like our parents Our idols are still the same and appearances don't deceive You say after them No one else showed up you can even say that I'm out Or else that I'm making it up But it's you who love the past and that you don't see It's you who love the past and that you don't see that the new always comes Today I know who gave me the idea Of a new consciousness and youth 'Are you at home guarded by god counting vile metal My pain is realizing That even though we've done everything, everything everything we've done we are still the same and we live we are still the same and we live we are still the same And we live like our fathers

The set is from a regular TV Show from back in the day, I don't remember if Elis did other songs for that show that day.

I recommend a Spanish singer. Her name is Diana Navarro with the song "El perdón". She is a very versatile singer who sings different styles of music. With incredible melismas and a very personal voice. greetings

You should try Elis Regina & Tom Jobim - "Aguas de Março" - 1974. It's on yt.
