Elite Dangerous - Flight Assist Off

Elite Dangerous gameplay with Oculus Rift DK2 head tracking, video effects were added to remove the oculus rift warping and to add motion blur (sorry if this looks ugly).
I turned off the flight assists which makes flying seem less like an air craft and more like an actual space ship. Much more difficult but a lot more rewarding. Had a bump on the way which made things a bit more interesting too.
Music is from the Interstellar OST.
In order of appearance:
Cornfield Chase
I'm Going Home
Dreaming of the Crash
Mountains
Where We're Going
Detach

Do yourself a favor if you read this first before watching the video, especially if you haven't seen interstellar yet. Get some headphones, and turn the volume up ~loud~. Like so loud you can't stand it, and maybe a little more. You won't regret the headache after such an ethereal experience.

By far my favorite video of Elite Dangerous I've seen so far! I just started playing this game a few days ago and I've been stubborn in that I want to learn flying without flight assist. Landing has been tough, but seeing this really makes me want to nail it! Thanks for sharing it!

After watching Interstellar, I searched for a game and came across Elite Dangerous. Instantly fell in love with it and believed it had huge potential. After several years, I see how Fdevs have kind of destroyed it, from what it truly could have become. Played it for a long time until I finally gave up. Odyssey was such a disaster! I truly feel sad for it. This video still remains my favourite one and remind me of what potential ED had in its early days :)

How dinamic this game is... Most of the display is not just part of the game, it's actually displaying on your window! It's connected to the ship to give you a sense of whereabouts, but if it breaks, then you're left in the dust and can't lock on to any place! And you'll be left to die because you can't find a station to fix your ship. This is amazing. I've seen other games that let you cruise around space, Space Engineers and maybe the upcoming No Man's Land. But man, I have got to get a good gaming PC, and play Elite Dangerous, and then get an Oculus to play in VR. How does it feel to play Elite with the Oculus? Pretty amazing I believe.

@onionburst
@onionburst 8 жыл бұрын
+Fernando Langalú Playing with the Oculus/Vive is like really being that Space Cowboy. Your ship's UI is totally holographic and it looks REAL. It is REAL when you put your hand on the game-matching x52 HOTAS you bought (cuz you're in love with VR) and slam the thrust to full power and boost your ass out of a station, your heart pounds as you slip your ship through the exit slot barely scraping your hull. You forget you're in a game as you wander off into the black of space, land on a unique unexplored world and roam it's surface. You prepare for your Real and now immediate death when your enemies overwhelm you and deplete your hull to 0, with sparks flying and no more oxygen-- even though you can still breathe RL air, you subconsciously start holding your breath when the canopy shatters and the atmosphere is sucked out. Once you're done playing you take off the headset and realize that normal life could never be that exciting and that you want one of these portals for your very own plumbing into the depths of the universe.

This video, more than any other I've seen, has summed up what I want from a space sim. Even if the controls are arcade-y the simple fact that you can end up in a tense situation with damaged systems and leaking oxygen, rather than just simply dying or losing 'armor' or 'health' is a huge plus for me. Also, the Interstellar soundtrack was a great choice.

Elite Dangerous gameplay with Oculus Rift DK2 head tracking, video effects were added to remove the oculus rift warping and to add motion blur (sorry if this looks ugly). No. No Sorry. NO. This is GREAT. You should do these for other games. I realize this game probably works well for it (hard to see distortion in the inky background) but WOW. This is the first GOOD representation of what the Oculus actually does I have seen in a video.

Not really, bottom left window gives you information about the thing you are targeting, such as what faction they are and how far away, to the left of that is the target visual, which shows you what direction the target is, and the tiny circle with the white dot is the alignment circle to make sure aligned with the super cruise target

Great video, really good music editing. I have been there, but panicked and bounced off the side of the station entrance while my canopy was collapsed. Not my finest hour...

Okay. This. Is. Amazing. First of all it seems Elite Dangerous was designed with the Oculus Rift in mind. The HUD + in game camera lends itself to the head tracking of the Rift. Secondly, the game, from what I can gather, excels as a pure immersive experience. There is hardly any gameplay. It seems fair to compare it to an arcade game. One of the old ones from arcades where you'd go and sit in a booth and there'd be a joystick and it felt like you were flying a spaceship. Literally Asteroids but in 2015, and fully immersive. In some ways this game is stuck in the 80's. Now we expect more from our games. We want NPC's and gameplay and a story. Or if it's multiplayer then we want guilds and factions and parties and raids and competition. This game really focuses on getting core competencies down, of which there are only a few: flight modelling, beautiful landscapes and audiovisual experience. In those regards the game is simply amazing. From a sound design perspective it's hard to find a game that matches it tbh. Even AAA titles don't nail sound design as well as ED does. I'm guessing a lot of people enjoy it because of what it does right, and if you enjoy it enough you might be able to overlook the fact that there's little to do in the vast universe of the game (in terms of gameplay). Most games nowadays offer so much in terms of content that it's hard to figure out what to do, or in what order. It's nice to have a game that focuses on getting it's core competencies right, and then leaving the rest up to the player. TL;DR 1980's retro gaming makes a comeback in 2015
