I look at these box sets, available in various sizes, with the range of units, the rules and missions, the box turning into terrain and a lay-down sheet, and I think "GW have *aced* this. This is an easy to pick up, fully featured intro to the hobby; I'd totally buy this as a Christmas pressie"

if you getthe elite one too basicaly it is only the rank and file that is a duplicate, the HQs and bikes+destroyers are still "new"

A couple more figures, a couple more missions but the same extension proposals as the recruit box.....the recruit box is pretty good value (apart from the necrons right arms not wanting to stay in their sockets!).

I think this is the better version if you enjoy the game and the creation process. I think the other more expensive version is for people who really want to hop straight into the game because a massive part of its price is literally just the terrain alone. I’m thinking of getting this because I want to return to the hobby. Thanks

Yeah I bought Indomitus for my school club, but when I saw that the Elite starter came with the data sheets, I exchanged it.

I honestly would prefer them over the standard army codex. Battlefront is doing this with their Flames of War game where you can just get unit cards and skip getting the army books. Heavens knows that it's easier to go through a few cards with your stats when you're at a gaming table. They also have each army's special rules on a few cards too. It won't be so easy though for 40K given all of the specific rules most factions have though. I agree that the programmed instructions are a big boon towards building the hobby and I like that they have some training scenarios in them. I would really love it if they just told you power levels and allow you to field your own troops. But then again this is a starter set with premade armies in it. Still, it would be great if they did power levels so that you could try out other factions like Sisters of Battle or the Imperial Guard in the place of one of the boxed set's factions. It would make the starter books more flexible.

Randall Case cards are way more convenient for actually playing a game. Really grinds my gears that cards for Aeronautica were desperate expensive purchases rather than just in the box like x-wing.

Great review. I am thinking of starting a space marine chapter, most probably Dark Angels. Can these units be folded into that chapter? I debated buying the Vanguard box set but I read that those units don't work with Dark Angels?

You can include these models into Dark Angels, yes :) Sternguard Veterans unit and Vanguard Veterans unit can't be added to Dark Angels by current rules, yes, but those are very specific units. The names "Sternguard Veterans" and "Vanguard Veterans" are referring to a very particular unit of marines among many others that you CAN use. This box, for example, contains a single-model unit, "Primaris Captain", a unit of "Assault Intercessors", and a unit of "Outriders", none being the aforementioned "Sternguard" or "Vanguard Veterans". Therefore there isn't anything saying they can't be from the Dark Angels Chapter 👍🏻

Great video. I’m looking at getting back into 40k after 25+ years away, alongside my 9M and 12F year olds. Please Naomi (and comment people), which version would be best for a Christmas present? Secondary question, I want to start an Ork army, which units would make good opponents to the models in the starter sets? Lastly, any advice regarding best paints to buy (starting from nothing!) to do Blood Angels and Deathskulls? Thanks!

Personally I'd get the command version if you don't already have terrain. The terrain GW makes these days is phenomenal, and playing with good terrain is just so much more immersive. For blood angels armour, spray Mephiston Red, recess shade Agrax Earthshade and edge highlight with evil sunz scarlet. If you're not up to edge highlighting, just skip that step and they will still look decent. But generally for painting I'd recommend you just watch videos on youtube. Naomi has some on her channel, and the official Warhammer TV has tons of painting videos, but some other great painting channels are midwinter minis, goobertown hobbies and pete the wargamer.

I've watched a few painting videos but there seems to be such a variety in technique its hard to know what paints to commit to - I know over time it's easy to build up a set but need to justify the initial outlay to a doubtful wife!

Hey, Erik. Don’t worry about 9th Edition for now, most things related to 9th are still on pre-order and haven’t been released to the public. The changes between 8th and 9th are pretty minor and you should still be able to learn the game without being left too far behind. Hope this helped!

Of course, that's exactly what they do. You'll pay slightly over the odds on ebay, but that's the price for the convenience of being able to buy just a single model or squad. I'm certainly glad they do this, otherwise I'd have had to buy that entire crappy saga of the beast box just to get ragnar blackmane...
