When you see how he runs, he's still landing like he's barefoot, landing on his forefoot and whipping straight back with a crazy rate. Not heel strike rolling like they've been designed for. The shoes don't mean shit here, he's just that good. Put them on some random person and say goodbye to their knees within a couple months.

Also, calling anything in the shoe a "propulsion system" at is blatantly misleading. The shoes are providing ZERO propulsion and it's still all coming from the athlete. That should really be the only regulation, that shoes can't generate their own propulsion. It's not Nike's fault that everyone else can't keep up.

It’s not that any individual shoe is banned. It’s just that they see a need to set a standard somewhere, anywhere really. Without a standard, runners could use stilts, prosthetics, 5 inch thick shoes, etc. eventually this becomes less of a sport about the human ability and more a competition about technology. Obviously you would need to be a world class athlete in the first place. But take a look at formula 1, an extreme example. The top three teams consistently win the races and championships. Not because they have the best drivers (debatable) but because they pour millions into researching and developing the best cars. (In racing, car development has always been part of the competition, and isn’t inherently bad (also debatable). I think most will agree that athletic competitions should be a measure based primarily on a humans physical ability.) They could have set the rule at 40mm and 3 carbon fiber plates, but chose 40mm and 1 plate. Hence some shoes were don’t make the cut (‘‘banned’’) and some do make the cut.
@dustinropp4 жыл бұрын
Well the idea is that the carbonfiber plate provides extra energy in your step, which means you are now using mechanical advantage rather than raw human ability. Which is the spirit of competition. Everyone CAN use them but using them defeats the idea of raw talent being the cause of victory
@MusicBent4 жыл бұрын
dustin ropp it doesn’t really add any ‘extra’ energy to the system. It stores energy from the foot strike and releases it during the end of the stride. Most running shoes absorb energy into the EVA foam, but the foam doesn’t spring back until it is in the air. Energy is stored and released. Nothing ‘extra’ There are plenty of ‘normal’ shoes on the market that already do this. Mizunos, hokas, etc.

I know the vapor fly line are very different but I’m reminded of the 2003 Nike Zoom Spiridon. A performance trainer that could be used as a racer! The shoe was highly engineered in my book. Such dumb rules. They would need to do this rule for all sport equipment across all sports to be consistent; race wheelchairs, oars, cycles, swim suits, cycle shoes, helmets etc, vault poles, rackets, gloves , guns, bows, skis, etc.... I can understand that without rules it would be an advantage to elites joined to certain sport manufacturers development programs, but the public just wants faster athletes, period.

So you find best runner, pay him to wear your shoes and when he breaks the record you say its because of the shoes. Of course it helps but Eliud would be best runner in Asics or Mizuno too.

The forefoot Air Zoom pods are the same kind you can find in the Nike LeBron shoes (basketball). I'm not surprised they found their way into the running shoes given the athlete like LeBron whose size/mass can attest to the durability of the cushioning strength.

Do these shoes really dramatically improve your running? Asking as a casual runner, not training for any events or anything.

I’m a 45 minute 10k-er. That is I’m past my prime and not fast. I have run a local hilly road 10k 5 years out of 6, in recent years. This January I ran it in Nike Next% (not the version with the AirPad and multiple carbon fibre inserts, an earlier version). I took 80 seconds off my previous best time for that race, felt better at the end and recovered faster. In previous years I had improved my time by between 3 and 30 seconds from year to year. It could be the placebo effect, it could be that training the same programme as previous years somehow accumulated and worked out better this year, but I think the shoes must take some of the credit for that 80 seconds improvement!
@njackson184 жыл бұрын
George Row I improved my 5K time by 3 minutes In some discontinued Saucony shoes I bought for $50. Placebo effect is the correct word you used. After all, you have to justify the money you spent as everyone who does the same thing.

Quick think on the air zoom pods, Nike has been using them in their shoes for years now. The pegs have had the pods for generations now. I always remember how much the air pod felt like a brick in the 33/34 when you first wore them. Exposing them doesn't change the core functionality and if having those pods in the pegs for years was cool using them in a marathon shoe really isnt that big of a deal

The marathon record by Kipchoge is still over 2h. The run where he was under 2h was a promotional event for the shoes by Nike that didn't follow the official marathon rules.

Running barefoot isn’t what you’d like bud. This innovation in the running world is absolutely perfect for competition. Other sports have gear to aid them so we do too but with more purpose now and that’s what we need

@@kanehiro4635 That is why our sport is so great. It should be the fastest runner that wins. Not the fastest shoe that wins. They are literally adding springs. That is taking it too far

@Brennan Draper, I don’t think you see what is going on here. what’s functioning are the legs not the shoes, they’re not wheels. Good shoes or bad shoes whatever you run is what your legs and body ran;not the shoes, you can’t expect an elite athlete to be exponential just with the shoes, they are still busting their asses more than anyone in the sport and for them to be restricted with shoes because they’re too fast is retarded because that’s the point of the sport. To be the fastest possible
