If forcing Maori to learn English, and adopt English culture, as happened in the past, is now considered repugnant, then surely it is just as morally reprehensible to force non-Maori to adopt Te Reo and Maori culture.
@rod-contracts1616

Yes, Maori petitioned the government around 100 years ago to have schools stop Maori kids speaking Maori at school because they wanted their kids to learn English! Discouraging good English among any kids by giving preference to Maori language and culture definitely puts them lower in the job stakes, for life. Simply, applicable skills are key.

@@rod-contracts1616 Maori were also responsible for the Tohunga Suppression Act for much the same reasoning. They wanted their people to join the modern world and saw English and Christianity as the vehicles for that. It's the same reason the Irish stopped passing their language onto their children because they saw only English as the way to succeed. There was also a time when people in the British Isles were pulling down standing stones because they regarded them as evil structures to pagan gods.

Indigenisation can be positive - but it can also be neutral - and it can a negative. The balance is no net gain. So then we move from there to the costs, the time and the outcomes - and in summary - on Net Balance - it is a NEGATIVE. The huge majority of indigenous 'teachings" are simply not relevant to today. If you want to learn such things (and pay for it) then good for you - but mandatory learning or even content in curricula, should be avoided as it is not cost or culturally effective - particularly in SCIENCE - in fact it is a definite NEGATIVE.

Can’t be indigenous to 2 locations at once. Of course the Australian Aboriginal people CAN claim to be truely indigenous, they have been there for 50 thousand years roughly. Just think of that time period.

Education has gone down the gurgler too far already with distractions abd slack attitudes. Heck, many of the Malaysian and Singaporean immigrants have a superior grasp of English than too many NZ born pakeha, and of course moreso the Manglish of many BUT NOT ALL Maori. Maori are just as capable but education MUST focus on what it takes to succeed in the 21st century!

If those compulsory courses are implemented and there can be no questioning of the content being taught, then any qualifications awarded by New Zealand universities will not be worth the paper that they are printed on. Universities should be the bastion of free speech, open debate, and the ability to question the status quo, in order to advance our knowledge base; clearly something that will not happen under the proposed curriculum.

What’s happening to our higher education? There’s no argument that we need to make a distinct shift in our education & how we think, from our reductionists bias inherited by 17th Newtonian Physics to the more holistic science principles of quantum physics. One might also argue that systems thinking which observes wide boundary principles & relational interconnectedness is adjacent to indigenous thinking, but enforcing Māori principles, politics & mysticism as the only form of (#decolonised) regenerative thinking is dangerously politically essentialist. The sort of shit you’d expect from a legacy of left wing nuts.

Continually pushing the treaty as the go to reason for trying to insert an agenda into the university is sad. Its not about "ti tiriti". Its about control. Inserting an unchallenged questionable type of "science" and making it compulsory in so many courses is dumbing down learning. And is damaging the Auckland University's reputation as a world rated learning university. The emporer has no clothes but is reading Marx and Engels. And I wont be paying for my kids to go there.

The word itself (university) means universal… it’s not bound to a place’ - Rata. Actually the word ‘university’ is based on the latin universitas magistrotum which means community of scholars and teachers. A university is bound to a place because the research and development targets and benefits the country it is bound to. I studied IT there and met research fellows who are benefiting NZ’s IT sector.

The implication rata is making here is that only ideas that are universally applicable to all parts of the earth should be taught. That leaves us with very little to explore. The world is vast and diverse.

“Science is about being able to put something out & for the ability for it to be be challenged” - it’s not just a question of whether Matauranga Māori will challenge this - what about gender ideology that states that xx & xy chromosomes don’t determine if someone is male/female anymore? isn’t that more of a threat to science? this channel doesn’t acknowledge the problems that Pakeha are creating going against meritocracy & it’s not necessarily Māori pushing for all these changes but Pakeha themselves due to the influence of marxist ideology. These changes wouldn’t be happening if Pakeha weren’t at the forefront of pushing all this - do you really think brown people have any real power in this country? name a Polynesian prime minister?
