Think before you speak'. A common saying, but how many people actually follow that maxim? Elizabeth Stokoe does, though as Professor of Social Interaction at Loughborough University, her work is more focused on thinking about what others have said.

I wish my high school guidance counselor would have told me that there was such a job as a conversation analysis. This field is so fascinating. Thank You, KZbin and Ms. Stokoe.

I got that the word "Willing" is powerful. They linguistic symbols in the text, the call sound quality and the modulated voices were distracting to lay people. I agree with Hanhan94yo that if money is on the line, they will keep you on the phone for hours until they are hung up upon or the sale is made. Sales and creditor callers in the U.S. are so persistent that many people won't even take a call from a source not in their phones memory. The medical clinic is also very accommodating and encouraging to get people in. If my doctor is busy, I'd almost be surprised if they didn't suggest the next available appointment or next available doctor. That's got to be covered in Call Reception 101.

Best choice us to start with positional power. If you have it, influence becomes a relatively simple proposition. People with power over others tend to talk more, to interrupt more, and to guide the conversation more, by picking the topics. Otherside, try using cognitive incision, that is you must listen closely to the speaker, track their statements, and predict where they are going. The sharpness of your question is absolutely crucial. It cannot be simplistic, easily dismissed, or nominal. It should be relevant and well-timed. Maybe humorous. It should go off like a curiosity detonator in people’s minds. So it doesn’t matter how often you speak, how many stories you tell, or how many laughs you get. What matters, what is truly powerful, are authentic questions. It’s what leads to an interesting and dynamic conversation with diverse perspectives. And it ensures that loud-voiced extroverts don’t dominate the discussion.

Everything in this talk was triggering me. The title, the haircut, the attempt to manipulate by changing words, overlooking the need for validation for some of the people in the conversation completely (a mistake I do myself, too, I think). But still, I learned a lot. This also brings some balance to the Ted Talk I watched before. In the Ted Talk the first-mover was "the problem". In this talk the first-mover is supported in their need for empathy (not sympathy) and therefore recognized as them, too, being faced with a burden.

I could have saved you all the work in having to put a presentation together simply by coming out and saying .... " Currently all Uk receptionists are Pricks..... and please use the word ... Willing" the end.....
