I liked the overall setting and feel of 2009. The fact that the villagers had to legitimately service through scavenging and what not was interesting, and return to multiple villages gave it a real "tribal" vibe, which I enjoyed. While I can't say I managed to get any of the sets beyond Metus, I can say I love the majority of the designs and colours, and oh man SECONDARY COLOURS THAT AREN'T GREY! Yeah, the movie was a bit of a hit and miss with some interesting moments and some dull, but overall, I can say that from what I remember, it was a pretty sweet year. Then 2010 happened. And then 2016.

Pretty much all of Cryoshell's stuff is really good in my opinion. My favorite is "Creeping In My Soul" (Mahri). But the OG ones like the original version of "Gravity Hurts" and "Face Me" are up there, too.

The one thing 2009 did indisputably well: it brought back very strong and identifiable elemental color schemes and armor styling, IMO this was the first year that the Inika builds had really strong color choices. Inika was dark and muted, Mahri had strong sets like Jaller but some of the others kept their Inika coloring or had crazy colors that didn’t match their element, and the Phantoka and Mistika had way too much silver, but Glatorian brought back many of the bright lively color combos of the early years.

I used to always make custom rules for the action figure game. Exclusive abilities for each character, melee attacks, and even using zamor spheres for more range (at the cost of control, since they roll around unlike thornaxes). It can certainly be a fun game to play with MoCs, especially if you're feeling REAL creative and playing along with some sort of story as you play.

I always just house ruled the glatorian battle. Every turn, you get to do two things at once. Attack with melee or thornax, and move or guard. Melee deals 2 points of damage while thornax deals 1. Blocking removes 1 point of damage. Vehicles can move twice, but can't block. That way, raising the figure's shield actually means something.

If I had been writing 2009, without the expectation of “oops it got cancelled”, I would have written Mata Nui similarly to Toa Ignika. One who *Thinks* he’s perfect, but nobody else believes so. The Glatorian System works. We don’t need this upstart telling us how we’re wrong. Hell. If they did find out what Mata Nui truly was, I’d have the Glatorian despise Mata Nui for trying to dismantle their entire society over a squabble that has nothing to do with them. 2010 would have been about traveling the world of Bara Magna, gaining favor From the leaders of the 5 tribes, with new sets to showcase just how deadly the world is without the protections of the Glatorian System.

One thing very weird is that in the actual instructions for the sets it says that hitting the glatorian drains 2 points and the hitting the can drains 1, but on any website I visit it says that hitting the glatorian only drains 1 point and hitting the can drains 2. Why is this?

Alex Tritt Yeah but with Vehicles you can get double points if you hit the driver. Titans have no vehicle or canister, so you NEED 10 hits.

I recall that Fero and Skirmix was always unbalanced in the game since Skirmix itself had no life counter, so it was basically a meat shield for Fero at no cost. Titans kept their boxes out in place of a canister.

*I have the Thornatus Vehicle but unfortunately it is disassembled again and the parts are all jumbled up with the rest of my pieces. I did my best to rebuilt Perditus and added parts of the left over vehicle as a shield and sword. I sadly don't have the motivation to rebuild the Thornatus. :(*

I actually have a couple of these guys I have...what's his name, Barax? The little Water Tribe kid with the glaive and the recolored Tahu-Mata-Fire-Sword, that one, Metus, and Tuma, albeit incomplete (I believe he was missing his head, one of the Metru Chestplates for the little Glatorian-Dial-things, one of the giant blades used on his back, his sword, the thornax, and I think one of the little daggers that were on his feet)

My first set I bought in stores was actually ackar so this year is special to me. I also really like how all the tribes have pieces that make you able to tell what element they're supposed to be other than the colors (I'm lookin at YOU mistika.)

Mata Nui could have served as the embodyment of the audience/readers on the new world that is Bara Magna, slowly learnining about its history, meating new characters and environments. As a character he could have been really smart but distrustful, seeing that he spent thousands of years studying other worlds to later be betrayed by the one he considered his brother, maybe even coming to the realization that it is now up to him to make the decisions since there are no Toa or Order of Mata Nui to deffend him, truly show that "The Great Spirit" had his insecurities too, but I guess Mata Nui Sue was a better option.

I’m not saying I hate the theme and the characters it introduced. But looking back at 2009, I started to think Bara Magna could have waited and we would have the year focused on Teridax’s Reign. And Mata Nui could have built up enough energy to go back to the Matoran Universe to help with the fight against Teridax.

2009 had so much potential, Bara Magna was awsome and unique, and since the only character from the previous soryline returning was Mata Nui, in a way it was like a soft reboot, they could have continued the story of Mata Nui's adventures for a few more years as he ties to find a way to save his people, along the way new and long forgotten threats could arise and Mata Nui would have to sideline his mission to help protect the people he's made friends with, thus he sees what it must have been like for the beings who kept his own giant body running, and see the kinds of struggles they had to go through, ths he begins to appreciate them more, eventually all these new threats are dealt with and he finishes his own mission, only for Teridax to arrive on Bara Magna and things play out mostly the same as they did originally.

I loved Bara Magna's story. In my early days liking Bionicle, it was pretty much the only real story I knew from Bionicle. 2008 was still my favorite year, but I didn't really know anything about its story

2009 was underrated. Sure, I'd didn't have colour coded villains or toa, but the first wave had great designs, and two very interesting species of villain. Agori were boring, but so were tohunga, and nobody complains about 2001! The representation of each element were much more apparent than 2008, and the characters were for the most part great!

I was fascinated by the idea of a "soft reboot"- when I first saw the poster indicating a humanoid figure standing on the surface of a vast desert, I got pretty hyped. The problem was that I was excited about the concept of a "new world", a world not yet entirely set in its ways or its peoples. I was hoping to see the formula changed up a bit to spark the imagination in regards to this alien planet- one I thought could capture (perhaps recapture) the theme of building from scratch, scavenging for parts, exploring a place that's all but dead (completely contrasting aqua magna, or wherever Mata Nui was from). While I liked certain sets, the overall story just didn't interest me when it was established.

i always loved the red toas... the red characters were always the one that i had to get... that until gresh appeared, he became my 1st and only glatorian, then i got 4 glatorian legends and that was it, but the glatorian legends were somehow like compromises not really loved not like i loved gresh. he outstood of everyone, and i met gresh because of a book in my school library (somehow my library had bionicle i know) and i said: i want this guy. he is the only bionicle my 8 year old me ever used his money my parents gave me on. so sad i never got to see more of him

Don't get me wrong I still love O8, in my perception I'm sure has changed since 3 years ago in this comment was placed. But it really boils down to the breakable parts, overall what felt like a simpler approach to marketing, and builds that really just boil down to new form factors of an Inika builds. 09 had to be a year that was disruptively innovative and instead it was really more incremental

It is a shame to see 2009 was the final year for bionicles, back when I used to love those toys until it ended in 2009 while I would never like how bad the parts are though. Since the parts can break when you take the parts off and put back until they end up getting cracks! which it is a shame to see cool stuff like bionicles goes away for good The awesome toys that I love so much..
