I had 3-4" of ugly warm banding from level 8 tint touch-ups on my naturally ashy level 6 hair. During quarantine, I followed your previous baby lights and toning tutorials (which is what you are explaining in this new video.) It completely fixed my problem! I only wished I had discovered it sooner because I hated that warm outgrowth. I'm sorry to see what has happened to your industry this year. Because most of us are doing more diy hair stuff I wanted to mention that there is this trend of using baking soda with peroxide as a "no damage" lightening solution. So, I tried that a few months back and while it Did lighten the hair it was very harsh and it was very damaging. I ended up having to cut about 2 inches off my length and then dusted to get rid of all my fried ends. Not to mention that I had to shampoo my hair and rinse multiple times to get the grit out of my scalp and hair. It was just a nightmare lol stick with bleach imo! Thanks for the video, I trust your advice and you look stunning as always! 💗

I have a question!! If you are going lighter on the root with hair color and not bleach , if u been going alittle lighter per session there’s going to be a band from say your natural “level 4” how does adding a lighter shade each time fix the “ warm tone “ from the root if ur only touching up ur roots and not the bands from going lighter ? I'm so glad you did this video. Thank you so much. This is actually a really big problem for alot of people. I have been to the salon so many times and they still can't fix it. It's crazy because I have been told so many times to "bring inspo pic" and even when I do I still get some weird variation of red blonde with golden blonde highlights here and there. It's just annoying!!

You & I must be going to the same lame hairdressers!! I've been to high-end salons down to Aveda beauty school with instructors overseeing the foils. The only time I actually had a successful foil (had bands that she fixed the next day) was after the second foil... BUT she bleached 45 minutes on top of highlights she's done the day b4 & all my 'money pieces' broke off over the next month. But I looked 'freakin awesome' for the next month... & then just 'awesome' into I had 8 months worth of roots. I was too scared to have it messed up again. But another hairdresser did! Level 8 ASH is my enemy! Makes my hair color look like dirty saw dust color.

@@angelas.9717 I recently went to a salon who did an amazing job. In fact they don't even use purple shampoos because they lift hair so amazingly. I was blown away. In fact they recommend against using purple shampoos and just concentrate on getting the lift right. Then follow with the correct toner or toners then maybe gloss. I bring up the purple shampoos because all of us blondes are told to use it like it's the saving grace and it's not. It always leaves my hair looking metallic magenta or gray. I am totally comfortable doing this and have been retouching my own highlights since March, but what I haven’t found is a Demi gloss that even comes close to shades EQ for toner. What toning product available to the public do you recommend? The wella toners (that are really permanent color) blow my level 4-5 base up and turn it orange even when I use 10 volume.

I don’t like it but I don’t like being a complainer either. It’s been two weeks and it appears to be getting more orange over the last two weeks. I just wanted my bit of gray and my dark roots lifted to blonde like the bottom bc it had grown out a lot with the covid lockdown. I guess I should call and see if the guy will make it right. Thank you so much for these videos. I know my hairdresser is so very good, and just a real sweetheart. We have been struggling with my roots pretty much 3+ years though. I am almost 50 and a natural mousey brown, I always pull red. She has gotten me super light blonde, but I have a lot of damage now, even with olaplex. I’d say mid to ends. She does not over lap, but I went once to a closer salon and the baby highlights the lady did all over obviously overlapped even though she promised she wouldn’t. Anyhow, I stopped the highlights with my girl and have just been getting root touch ups to cover my grey. Religiously every 5/6 weeks.I can’t understand why we/she can’t get them to be a chocolatety brown.? Seems like sometimes they are and other times they are so orangey. It kills me to leave feeling so orange and all the time and cost ☹️ She has been having a hard time with COVID/young children etc so I have purchased product pre measured from her once. It turned out lovely when I did it🤷♀️ my last visit I had to go to a coworker and it looked great when I left, but after one wash bam orangy again. I’ve been using purple shampoo once a week to try and hide. I feel you can help with a formula that will work for me, after watching this particular video I see your hair looks just like mine did before I starting going grey. How can I get a consultation please?
@MegaTinni4 жыл бұрын
I can not answer everything, but you will want blue shampoo to correct orange (and green shampoo to correct actual red)
@MrzBadaBing4 жыл бұрын
MegaTinni is exactly you need a blue shampoo for brassy hair more for brunettes and purple is for light blondes . I wouldn’t use them too often maybe once a week because it can dry the hair . Use a good color safe shampoo and conditioner don’t wash hair everyday ... try 2- 3 days . Update all hot tools . Use heat protectant every time you put heAt in your hair I highly recommend “it’s a 10” leave in spray and the deep conditioning treatment so worth the money and will help you hair . Get a shower filter if you have hard water it will wash out your color and the minerals can give that brassy look . I’m a hair dresser and I work where there’s a a lot of hard water and anyone with it I always notice their hair always brassy and super dry . If you do you need to do a hard water treatment I recommend the brand “malibu “ find a stylist who has that type of treatment first and then do your color . What level are you ? I always used redken cover up for grey coverage and I find them being pretty neutral it covers really well and their ash tones are pretty cool toned . I usually mix an NN and a NGB to my mix cause sometimes you need the gold because the NN can look a little dull. But it def helps with the coverage and keeping the warm tones under control your stylist was probably using a color with too much warmth in it . she needs to neutralize it using an ash tone like blue which neutralize the orange and give you a neutral color. Also maybe she’s using to high of a developer and lifting too much of your natural hair color which exposes even more warm tones I would use 20 vol .
@rain37433 жыл бұрын
Because in order to completely cover gray you have to use a permanent color, (There are exceptions) which opens the cuticle more with either ammonia or another lifting derrivative, and exposes natural warmth. ALL hunan hair pulls warm. When we go gray the Pigment leaves the hair, so the natural has to be put back in to cover. The more natural you need in the formulation, the less ash (cool) you can add in. It depends on your percentage of gray in the hair. (25%? 50-100%?) Once you go permanent it's a different game and you fight the brassy banding that comes with it. There's more to it, but just know it has to do with the permanent formulation and the % of gray in your hair. It's not your stylist's fault that the roots go brassy. The toning shampoos can help but they can also over tone your brightness on the mids and ends. J switched to Chromatics for my own permanent because tbeir mix ins really cooled it down. I could put in a 9N and add some violet to counter the warmth. If you're darker, sone blue can be added to to combat the orange. I also use Guy Tang's Ni series because it's a cool, ashy permanent right out of the tube. I can also add his shadow ash to the mix and it's gorgeous.

@positiveenergy8888, love your comment. Just saw this! I wonder if the root tap is used to neutralize red/orange in the natural base color while diffusing the lines between the highlights and base and giving a “background” and dimension for the blonde to pop. I think it may also be a preference as I have had clients favoring a root shadow and clients who did not. Great discussion. Open to your thoughts.
@bperez86565 ай бұрын
If you don’t like it it’s A. Personal preference and that’s normal B. Potential ignorance on your part about how natural color works Your natural dark color probably would look horrific with blonde attached to it, but shadow roots are Perfectly pignmented to look like natural blondes Most natural blondes have a brown shadow that grows into light blonde…. When you do a blocky bleach job you end up looking like a fake blonde But if that’s your preference then go for it

there is no such thing as a permanent hair colour unless you put black on bleach blonde hair then some orange pigment will remain on there for a year or two, but everything else washes out after 1.5 months or less depending how often you wash your hair.

Yep, especially for us level 6-7ish blondes! It’s so hard to get gray coverage at that level that isn’t guaranteed to fade to an unflattering hue falling somewhere along the spectrum of the Lori-Vallow-Prison-Garb-Orange family of colors! Speaking of her, fun fact for y’all: Child-Murdering Cult Mom Lori is actually a hairstylist herself, originally from San Bernardino! Which is Reason #456 I find her 2000’s-era mahogany-underneath-blonde so curious!) 😂 In all seriousness though, I’m wondering if using a Demi-Permanent line known for at least a moderate amount of gray coverage (perhaps L’Oréal DIA Richesse or Redken SEQ cream?) is a better solution for tiding over those of us with less than 50% grays, who can no longer get away with just a head full of foils...thoughts??? I just feel like permanent color on my type of hair is always going to fade to an unflattering color, to the point that we need to figure out a way to address that warmth strategically, rather than always having to do corrective work once those between-the-foils sections inevitably fade to yuck. Wouldn’t refreshing the base with a Demi every 4-6 weeks ultimately be easier on the hair than using permanent and then having to correct the tone every time anyhow? Would love to hear any insight you might have Sylvia, since I know you specialize in blondes! 💛

I call most 7-8’s the no color zone, for it lacks depth and light! I either mix 1/4 of a #6 and the rest 3/4 #7 20 vol. same is true with your reds, don’t ever put straight red color with 20 vol on the roots aka the heat zone . mix 1/4 red to 3/4 brown or blonde. That way you don’t end up with “Hot Roots”. Or you could use 10 vol with your 7’s and/or use Shades EQ Demi put cap over it and under the dryer for 20 then take cap off and let it sit for 20 more mins for gray coverage. It’s ok if the roots Are a bit darker, especially now!

But what you are doing is a DOUBLE PROCESS (Bleach on top of Color) which is extremely harsh especially for fine denier hair which will only lead to breakage. If you want platinum blonde and your base is dark color won’t work. What’s worse darker blonde or damaged, fried platinum blonde hair that is so fragile and broken that you have to wear extensions (which btw, also cause more damage)?

Can you recommend bleach that we can get on amazon? And toner we can get too? I always use Wella but it’s too harsh

Wella is very harsh but it gets the job done I like Schwarzkopf blonde me bleach you can get on amazon if you ever get a hold of that bleach you'll never turn back although Ive heard of people not get correct bleach from certain Amazon sellers go by Amazon's choice that's what I may do I want some shades eq but scared to order off Amazon does anyone know where I could get some that's real product???

Ia D. S. Kevin Murphy has a great ammonia free bleach if you can get your hands on it! If you have a friend with a cosmetology, esthetician or nail tech license, they might be willing to purchase it for you at one of the stores that sell only to licensed people. Hope that helps!

This is exactly my hair problem, however I didn’t use colour. Lightener highlights, then 6n shades eq toots and 10n ends. I think I just took my lightener off SLIGHTLY too soon and finding it hard to cover this warm root

This was so helpful! I've been looking all over for advice on how to effectively color brunette hair without the orange. I'm wanting to go neutral blonde on my lengths and ends but a 6 on my roots, so you're saying I should lighten my roots to an 8 to achieve a 6? Or can I just lighten my entire head to a 9?

wait when you are doing brightening at the roots are you only using 30 vol developer? I am a bit confused

What brand hair color do you recommend to cover gray?
@suzettesmith20753 жыл бұрын
I just recently went to a newer salon. I have white hairs and bleaching it wasn't helping my whites. So the new stylist went in where my whites were with a level 3 and highlights. Finally did cover my Grey's but left it light enough without making me to pale

Any suggestions for me? I am a natural level 7 with about 50% gray. I go darker to cover my gray, level 6 or 5 and ALWAYS have orange/red hair when the sun hits it even though I use neutral or ash color.
@teebz57394 жыл бұрын
Is the colour deposit only or does it lift slightly? I would say deposit only and make sure its permanent and left on longer :)
@rosehackney79852 жыл бұрын
I would use 10 vol instead of 20 vol developer. The lift delends on the volume, higher more lift and lower less. And if you want to diminish the warmth try 7AA OR 7NA PERMANENT COLOR

Would the red neutralizer ruin my blonde balayage ends if I would to use it on my whole head? Or should I just keep it only to my roots and red spots close to the balayage?

Thank you so much for confirming what I am planning on doing as far as lifting my new roots! After I lifting the entire new growth, I have been applying lightest golden blonde (level 10) with a "No Red" color correction due to the amount of natural red tones in my hair. My natural color is a level 6 to 7 with approximately 30% grey. Currently I have an inch of new growth. I was wanting to ask how much new growth do you typically want before lightening your new growth? Any suggestions would be very helpful 🙂. Thank you again for such an awesome video! I look forward to seeing you in the salon soon!! Hopefully we will all be getting back to our lives but with precautions. 👝💄💋🛍. Any VLOGS coming our way for shopping (Sephora), clothing or new makeup tutorials for fall trends 2020?? Sounds like a great time!!

Not the creator, but I do my graying roots myself every 6 weeks with an eSalon kit. Sylvia is an affiliate for eSalon, I use her code. I guess it really depends on how fast your hair grows, on average hair grows about an half-inch per month. I like waiting a bit longer than that , it makes it easier to color my roots without touching my existing color.

So your toning on damp hair ? I thought it had to be dry?And someone said to use direct dyes meaning tore right out of the tube onto hair with no added or dilution of low or any developer?Ive never heard of this in my many years of bleaching

I recently (2 days ago) wanted my hair highlighted. I wanted it blonde, i was being realistic and said as much as my hair lightens highlights. I wanted my natural hair to peep threw my highlights (chunky, non patchy highlights)im a 3n naturally..i had a golden brown dye over all my hair. Lady said no black! She was going to leave my hair as is and just add full hair chunky and small lights. Turns out my highlights are almost green, and she put bleach on all my roots so its orange, snd i have dark patches on roots also, where she missed! Im so pissed! I paid her 300 snd left tip! What can i do? Can someone help me on what to do? I need to get out my home and now im looking a mess! 😪also, i approched her during the appointment after she washed my hair out and she said i was tripping in her own way. But until today i saw the dark roots missed. 😶🥺

Hi Sylvia, you make amazing videos. Thank you so much for sharing your amazzzing info. What about gray hair? It is different than a natural or coloured hair colour. There are different levels of gray on a head. They are rarely ever all the same. The colour lighter on top and darker in the back of the head. The top can be dyed with a colour to a level 8 -9. So you are blonde. But the back - underneath can only be dyed to a level 7 RUST tone. Eek!! 🤯 Would luv to know how lighten the back without bleach? Do not wish to use bleach. Perhaps with an accelerator that is not bleach? Scruples has one. How about a High lift blonde with 30 or 40 volume? Or, what about dying the whole head with a level 7 and 8 - 1/2 and 1/2 with an ASH Blonde? Could this result in a medium ash blonde all over evenly and cancelling out all red tones? Will toner and purple shampoo work properly on dyed hair? Would luv to have the answers to these questions. You are definetly one of the BEST with hair. 😊

Hi. Excellent information. I use Natural Instincts light blonde on my hair just to blend the gray with my dark blonde to light brown hair. Natural Instincts is semi permanent but seemed to be doing the job. I had been applying it to the roots only - every 2 months. The last time I used it I had waited 4 months between colorings and reapplied to the 2” of root growth and it did almost nothing. I left it on for 30 min as usual. Any idea what happened? I called Clairol but they didn’t know what went wrong. Thank you.

I had carmel highlights and used t35 wella toner to make it more natural but it turned my highlights orange and my roots are orange. They were dark brown and now it looks like I have orange hair on top and dark brown at the bottom. How do I fix this? Or do I wait for the toner to be washed away, and when it does wash away will my roots be orange still?
