You’re my favorite! Been watching you for a while now. You always give off such a positive vibe. Seem to be very beautiful & genuine person. I think this video will help me a lot! I’ve always been blonde, lifting the hair prior to coloring it seemed unnecessary. You explained it so now I understand what was happening to my color at the roots. I was always using ash/blue/violet colors so it’s so frustrating to end up brassy after a hand full of washes! Thank you! 😊

I'm so glad you did this video. Thank you so much. This is actually a really big problem for alot of people. I have been to the salon so many times and they still can't fix it. It's crazy because I have been told so many times to "bring inspo pic" and even when I do I still get some weird variation of red blonde with golden blonde highlights here and there. It's just annoying!!

You & I must be going to the same lame hairdressers!! I've been to high-end salons down to Aveda beauty school with instructors overseeing the foils. The only time I actually had a successful foil (had bands that she fixed the next day) was after the second foil... BUT she bleached 45 minutes on top of highlights she's done the day b4 & all my 'money pieces' broke off over the next month. But I looked 'freakin awesome' for the next month... & then just 'awesome' into I had 8 months worth of roots. I was too scared to have it messed up again. But another hairdresser did! Level 8 ASH is my enemy! Makes my hair color look like dirty saw dust color.

@@angelas.9717 I recently went to a salon who did an amazing job. In fact they don't even use purple shampoos because they lift hair so amazingly. I was blown away. In fact they recommend against using purple shampoos and just concentrate on getting the lift right. Then follow with the correct toner or toners then maybe gloss. I bring up the purple shampoos because all of us blondes are told to use it like it's the saving grace and it's not. It always leaves my hair looking metallic magenta or gray. I had a great experience and have been getting compliments non stop!

I have a question!! If you are going lighter on the root with hair color and not bleach , if u been going alittle lighter per session there’s going to be a band from say your natural “level 4” how does adding a lighter shade each time fix the “ warm tone “ from the root if ur only touching up ur roots and not the bands from going lighter ? New stylist here!!!

I have watched your videos for YEARS and I FINALLY know what your talking about with everything. Took me doing a foilayage on my hair, now having dark level 4/5, natural roots , watching the reverse bayalage, and this and another video together to GET IT I still see orange in your back mid lengths and I'm thinking that's just somthing to deal with I'm guessing now I'm gonna try to lift my base to a 6A *( with a 6g and 6n ) 1st then root tap with 6A after highlights every 3rd time I do my hair . O I need some product !! Lol I'm gonn as have to get from Sally RN. Cheaper for me , but I will eventually know' the right color and tones to stock up on after some strand test 1st the ofcorse after a few mths of trial : ) your amazing! During quarantine, I followed your previous baby lights and toning tutorials (which is what you are explaining in this new video.) It completely fixed my problem! This video was awesome! I have one quick question, is there a permanent toner you recommend for this (also is color completely out of the question then?). Because you mentioned this is kinda maintenance (since eq shades fade pretty fast) but are there any alternatives for us who want the colors permanently? Ish? Thank you so much! ❤️
@annas7892
@annas7892 3 жыл бұрын
there is no such thing as a permanent hair colour unless you put black on bleach blonde hair then some orange pigment will remain on there for a year or two, but everything else washes out after 1.5 months or less depending how often you wash your hair.

I am totally comfortable doing this and have been retouching my own highlights since March, but what I haven’t found is a Demi gloss that even comes close to shades EQ for toner. What toning product available to the public do you recommend? The wella toners (that are really permanent color) blow my level 4-5 base up and turn it orange even when I use 10 volume.

Because most of us are doing more diy hair stuff I wanted to mention that there is this trend of using baking soda with peroxide as a "no damage" lightening solution. So, I tried that a few months back and while it Did lighten the hair it was very harsh and it was very damaging. I ended up having to cut about 2 inches off my length and then dusted to get rid of all my fried ends. Not to mention that I had to shampoo my hair and rinse multiple times to get the grit out of my scalp and hair. It was just a nightmare lol stick with bleach imo! Thanks for the video, I trust your advice and you look stunning as always! 💗

Hi Sylvia, you make amazing videos. Thank you so much for sharing your amazzzing info. What about gray hair? It is different than a natural or coloured hair colour. There are different levels of gray on a head. They are rarely ever all the same. The colour lighter on top and darker in the back of the head. The top can be dyed with a colour to a level 8 -9. So you are blonde. But the back - underneath can only be dyed to a level 7 RUST tone. Eek!! 🤯 Would luv to know how lighten the back without bleach? Do not wish to use bleach. Perhaps with an accelerator that is not bleach? Scruples has one. How about a High lift blonde with 30 or 40 volume? Or, what about dying the whole head with a level 7 and 8 - 1/2 and 1/2 with an ASH Blonde? Could this result in a medium ash blonde all over evenly and cancelling out all red tones? Will toner and purple shampoo work properly on dyed hair? Would luv to have the answers to these questions. You are definetly one of the BEST with hair. 😊

Hi. Excellent information. I use Natural Instincts light blonde on my hair just to blend the gray with my dark blonde to light brown hair. Natural Instincts is semi permanent but seemed to be doing the job. I had been applying it to the roots only - every 2 months. The last time I used it I had waited 4 months between colorings and reapplied to the 2” of root growth and it did almost nothing. I left it on for 30 min as usual. Any idea what happened? Thank you so much for confirming what I am planning on doing as far as lifting my new roots! After I lifting the entire new growth, I have been applying lightest golden blonde (level 10) with a "No Red" color correction due to the amount of natural red tones in my hair. My natural color is a level 6 to 7 with approximately 30% grey. Currently I have an inch of new growth. I was wanting to ask how much new growth do you typically want before lightening your new growth? Any suggestions would be very helpful 🙂. Thank you again for such an awesome video! I look forward to seeing you in the salon soon!! Hopefully we will all be getting back to our lives but with precautions. 👝💄💋🛍. Not the creator, but I do my graying roots myself every 6 weeks with an eSalon kit. Sylvia is an affiliate for eSalon, I use her code. I guess it really depends on how fast your hair grows, on average hair grows about an half-inch per month. I like waiting a bit longer than that , it makes it easier to color my roots without touching my existing color.

I have strawberry blonde hair which I went more auburn with darker warm brunette lowlights and blonde highlights. Not only did the highlights not stay contrasting for long, but how do I deal with roots that are naturally "brassy" or blend lighter hair into the darker hair? So many videos show darker roots coming in

Hi Elle, love your videos, I learn so much from them. There is only one question about the root tap. Can you explain the exact mix ratio for the root tap and what level is the processing solution you use? Thank you so much.

Shades EQ requires 1:1 ratio (whatever quantity you have of the Shades EQ liquid, you match that same quantity of the Shades EQ developer in a bowl , which I believe is a 7 volume developer). Hope this helps!

Hi! Wow! Your videos are SO helpful! Thank you so much! I have a hair colour issue right now that I have no idea how to solve in the easiest and most inexpensive way!? I have long box dyed medium to dark brown hair, with a much darker brown band towards the top and then it goes slightly lighter brown again before turning into approximately 2 inches of grey with some medium ash brown regrowth! 😫 I want my hair much lighter, with some blonder baby lights and a nice money piece, and subtle root tap. I want more of a bronde. Maybe a mushroom kind of brown with blonde highlights to help make my regrowth less noticeable. Where do I begin? Lightening the banding? Then all over lightening? How do I handle the regrowth? Dye it and add highlights all over after that, and then a root tap? Please help meeee lol!

Hey Elle! Did a 10N root color (color gels) on a level 5/6 but only used 25 vol on her fine fine hair. Lifted orange. Broke it up with highlights but she still sees orange. 2 days ago.. doing again tonight would you just shadow root on dry hair to neutralize with 7n shades eq?

Thank you so much for these videos. I know my hairdresser is so very good, and just a real sweetheart. We have been struggling with my roots pretty much 3+ years though. I am almost 50 and a natural mousey brown, I always pull red. She has gotten me super light blonde, but I have a lot of damage now, even with olaplex. I’d say mid to ends. She does not over lap, but I went once to a closer salon and the baby highlights the lady did all over obviously overlapped even though she promised she wouldn’t. Anyhow, I stopped the highlights with my girl and have just been getting root touch ups to cover my grey. Religiously every 5/6 weeks.I can’t understand why we/she can’t get them to be a chocolatety brown.? Seems like sometimes they are and other times they are so orangey. It kills me to leave feeling so orange and all the time and cost ☹️ She has been having a hard time with COVID/young children etc so I have purchased product pre measured from her once. It turned out lovely when I did it🤷‍♀️ my last visit I had to go to a coworker and it looked great when I left, but after one wash bam orangy again. I’ve been using purple shampoo once a week to try and hide. I feel you can help with a formula that will work for me, after watching this particular video I see your hair looks just like mine did before I starting going grey. How can I get a consultation please?

I can not answer everything, but you will want blue shampoo to correct orange (and green shampoo to correct actual red)

MegaTinni is exactly you need a blue shampoo for brassy hair more for brunettes and purple is for light blondes . I wouldn’t use them too often maybe once a week because it can dry the hair . Use a good color safe shampoo and conditioner don’t wash hair everyday ... try 2- 3 days . Update all hot tools . Use heat protectant every time you put heAt in your hair I highly recommend “it’s a 10” leave in spray and the deep conditioning treatment so worth the money and will help you hair . Get a shower filter if you have hard water it will wash out your color and the minerals can give that brassy look . I’m a hair dresser and I work where there’s a a lot of hard water and anyone with it I always notice their hair always brassy and super dry . If you do you need to do a hard water treatment I recommend the brand “malibu “ find a stylist who has that type of treatment first and then do your color . What level are you ? I always used redken cover up for grey coverage and I find them being pretty neutral it covers really well and their ash tones are pretty cool toned . I usually mix an NN and a NGB to my mix cause sometimes you need the gold because the NN can look a little dull. But it def helps with the coverage and keeping the warm tones under control your stylist was probably using a color with too much warmth in it . she needs to neutralize it using an ash tone like blue which neutralize the orange and give you a neutral color. Also maybe she’s using to high of a developer and lifting too much of your natural hair color which exposes even more warm tones I would use 20 vol .

Because in order to completely cover gray you have to use a permanent color, (There are exceptions) which opens the cuticle more with either ammonia or another lifting derrivative, and exposes natural warmth. ALL hunan hair pulls warm. When we go gray the Pigment leaves the hair, so the natural has to be put back in to cover. The more natural you need in the formulation, the less ash (cool) you can add in. It depends on your percentage of gray in the hair. (25%? 50-100%?) Once you go permanent it's a different game and you fight the brassy banding that comes with it. There's more to it, but just know it has to do with the permanent formulation and the % of gray in your hair. It's not your stylist's fault that the roots go brassy. The toning shampoos can help but they can also over tone your brightness on the mids and ends. J switched to Chromatics for my own permanent because tbeir mix ins really cooled it down. I could put in a 9N and add some violet to counter the warmth. If you're darker, sone blue can be added to to combat the orange. I also use Guy Tang's Ni series because it's a cool, ashy permanent right out of the tube. I can also add his shadow ash to the mix and it's gorgeous.
