I have always been told the mineral salts in box dyes are the issue not actually the non customised colour. I was always told if someone came to me with box dye the mineral salts in box dye can react with things like bleach and this is when u get the hair melting, smoking etc

Thank you for this. It’s so frustrating to hear hair stylists constantly calling out the public for using at-home dyes and *never* acknowledging that some people simply cannot afford salon prices. We all want beautiful hair! It’s really tone deaf to not mention that price is a barrier, and this is one reason I love watching your videos!
@kkittycatkat19903 жыл бұрын
Do you have a Sally's? A tube of color and developer costs me around 15.00, if that. Then just the plastic tray and brush that is used over and over again. I get at least 2 uses out of one tube (I usually grab another color to mix with if I can as it covers my gray better) and one little developer so I'm actually saving money. I used to be intimidated to go in there and I really thought it would be expensive but it isn't. I totally understand the price thing, I'm on an extremely tight budget aka (poor). I bought a toner and it is around 6.00. If you can buy a large bottle of developer (around 20.00) you can save money as well however I can't always afford that. Just incase some people didn't know. 😊

I used Olia Dark Blonde during quarantine to fix a half yellow, half white disaster that a supposed expert colorist left me with when my stylist was between salons. I went to my salon, MY stylist (and other stylists) actually complimented my color! She even commented on how healthy my hair was! I really like it! (I went from naturally dark blonde with lots of gray and a hot multicolored mess of highlights to dark blonde all over, and my color turned out exactly the color that it showed on Garnier’s website’s little color guide/checker. It covered everything without looking flat or dull. Hope this is helpful!)
@spellywelly Жыл бұрын
REALLY helpful. I’m in a similar situation due to illness - long grey roots and the lengths of my hair bleached yellow-white haphazardly (thanks pro)! NEED to cover grey and even everything out with a more natural finish. I’ll give Olia a bash. Can I ask, did you go with 8 or 9 in your situation?
@MJT66 Жыл бұрын
@@spellywelly I went with 9. However, I don’t know if I got a bad batch from Amazon or if Garnier changed the formula, but the last two times I used the Olia it faded quickly and dramatically, and didn’t have the same gray coverage - so disappointing! I switched to Revlon ColorSilk which is also ammonia free (Dark Ash Blonde), and it did really well. It’s not as moisturizing, but the color and coverage was good. If the Olia doesn’t work for you that might be a good alternative. Hope this helps!

Did she have gray as she got older? I think they say on the box that it doesn't cover gray which I never understood because its supposed to be a permanent color. I guess its supposed to be a more transparent color. Plus that shade 100 I wouldn't think would cover gray meaning would not deposit enough color on top of gray. I think it has a 30V developer as well which lifts more for non gray darker hair. Id love to know if she is still using the same color! That would be great,

I got told from three different salons that I would have to have a very expensive color correction to get the red and yellow out of my hair to go back to the blonde I originally was before I decided to go back to dirty blonde. In the process my hair ended up turning copper color. One lady told me I should never be blonde which was funny because I was born a natural blonde. So after being told that by three salons I decided to come home and just bleach it myself so I did and it turned out okay the roots were all covered except I now have some yellow in my hair and I'm trying to figure a way to get it out of my hair without damaging it. I went and got a haircut after I bleached it just to see if it would be healthier after I've bleached it so it is in a healthy condition when I do this again. And on my journey of looking for what kind of toner and developer to use I found this Olia ammonia free platinum hair color but cannot find many reviews on it I was hoping to find a review on it on here to see if it really works because if not I think I have to result to a toner and a developer to get the yellow out of my hair. Because I do not have that kind of money to pay for a color correction in a salon because I have kids and bills and a husband and dogs to take care of so a color correction at a salon is not in the cards for me. Lol

@dreamscape4052 жыл бұрын
The reason you've not had strange color issues, like turning orange, is because the blonde you're coloring with is coating the grays, which are a cooler tone. So the blonde is mixing with those cooler grays, now creating undertones, which aren't brassy. You're getting a more natural blonde highlight that way.

Thank you for making educational videos like this one, without judging people. Personally, I don't go to hairdressers anymore simply because every time I went to one, they ruined my hair. It's really sad but since I started to cut, style and dye my hair by my own, it looks healthy, glossy and the way it should be. Hairdressers didn't want to listen me, that my hair bleaches hard, that it's really unpredictable while dying (as it may turn orange or green) - and they always cut it so badly (too short, too many layers leaving my hair thin, etc.). The last time I went to a hair stylist was about 5 years ago, right before my wedding - I wanted ashy ombre look, and I ended up with very warm, orangy brown/blond ombre. My skin, eyes and hair are definitely with cool undertones - so you may guess how did I look... I spent 5 hours on the chair, spent a lot of money and had to listen to the lady complaining about my hair and taking several coffee breaks (all of it happening in a L'oreal hair saloon!).... No, sorry, it's not for me. I won't let any other stylist touch my hair ever again.... However...If I could choose, you would be my only option. Unfortunately, that won't happen as I live too far.
@jnscott28582 жыл бұрын
@TropicArt Studio - That's awful... I generally find that female hairdressers have an underlying or subconscious thing that causes a bad hair cut/color with their female clients. I've only had one female stylist who didn't destroy my hair. Because of this history, I prefer to have my hair done by men. My experience is that the male stylists will listen, and actually do what you want OR suggest something that has amazing results. They're more appreciative of the women they are working on, without underlying issues, there's no subconscious jealousy or competition there. Perhaps you might consider that option. 😉

I have been cutting my own hair for over a year with the help of one of your hair trimming videos. The box colours that I bought always went too dark, then ended up too light. I had a very nasty experience with Garnier hair colour, so avoid that like the plague. On your recommendation 2 weeks ago I tried esalon. What a difference! I asked for a dark blonde shade and it came out dark blonde straight away. So far it isn't lightening, so I will continue with them. I have asked for a gold tone to be added to my next order colour. I am very happy with my hair colour now, so a big thank you Silvia. It's all thanks to you. :)

My hair is fairly thick on top but not so much on sides and at the hairlines. My hair is so fragile and baby fine it's as if I could compare it to the texture of many 95 year old say, aged women. I wear wigs since menopause and love them. But I do want to cover my graying natural hair. I am no longer able to use semi permanent so will try permanent. You're video was just what I needed. ❤

THANK YOU because some of us don't have the money to spend at a salon, it's quite expensive and sometimes you're not even satisfied with the results. I've had my scalp burned & damaged from a salon and they were rude about it ! definitely deterred me from going back, I prefer to do my own hair now.

I have had wonderful results from box color. You don't rush into it and plan ahead on what you want in your results. My dad was so excited when I let him dye my hair. My mom took a few days to notice.

wow im late but thank you so much for educating people and saying you dont care if they do it at home. some people are still so condescending about doing it at home when there are places like sally's or other beauty supply stores where u can get better than box dye, and even some box dye depending on the hair can be very effective and turn out well. there are plenty of people who are intelligent enough and capable enough to do their hair at home or help a friend do their hair and have the result turn out great. growing up i learned the hard way by experimenting and slowly learning the sort of science behind how certain products work through trial and error. i've completely fried my hair to a crisp, dyed it poop green on accident, you name it, and i've also done some colors where people ask where i got it done at or ask me to do theirs. if you are willing to learn the safe and effective ways to do it at home because you either cant afford a stylist or just like doing it yourself you can still get a great result. for me it's both but i also just really enjoy doing it myself, it's like a hobby but also a self transformation ritual lol "new hair new me" kind of vibe 😂💜

My stylist has the exact same values like u, she knows most people can't afford doing their hair in a salon every 6 weeks and she desn't judge, she gave me my formula and recommended few brands from to buy and gave me some pointers to how color my hair better and it's the best I could wish for

I love your hair color!! I have dark hair with some grey and i have been wanting to go blonde again! I love how yours is a little more blonde in the front and its not brassy at all! I had someone tell me that i cant wear any red because of my complexion but i believe i can wear a burgundy red or purple red also the dark hair with blue is pretty. I have always loved blonde hair though and. yours is perfect!! 💖

This is so informative. I have an issue with my neck right now and cannot go to a salon, but I would like to do something to my hair. I’m a little lost on shades and levels because different charts are different, but my hair is probably like medium golden brown and I would like to go to dark golden blonde (much darker than the colors shown on the lightener box you showed). I want to try something, but I don’t have the courage just yet, haha.

I have had professional highlights before, but in the last few years, it's DIY for me. My hair is actually naturally a light brown. As you can see in my pic, I have been able to keep my blonde color up, with Garnier Nutrisse LB01 ultra light cool blonde. I do use a toner and blue shampoo to maintain. It really doesn't look brassy either. I have been using it for about 5 years now. So glad I found your channel!

I am 1 month pregnant 🤰🏼 and don’t want to deal with retouch my roots so much since I am pregnant. I really want a dark brown box hair dry to much the rest of my roots but not sure if I should get a cool medium brown from L’Oréal preference or a dark ash brown I don’t want red tones also I am afraid using a dark brown and came out too dark I don’t want black hair just a ashy or cool dark brown

I’ve been to a salon before to go from dyed black hair to my natural color; it was expensive, my hair fell out, and in the end the color looked awful. Recently I did it myself with box color and went from dyed dark hair to my natural color which is dark blonde and it looks great! And my hair is still very healthy.

Curious as my self being a hairdresser, I am certainly not familiar with fox hair colors, and the only way to get familiar with a colour brand is with lots of experience, so being a professional hairdresser are you using box hair colours in your salon extensively so that you can form an opinion on which brand is the best and then make recommendations like the Garnier? Or do you get paid to endorse. Also with the plant /henna based color Obviously to get the hair colour that is pictured on the box, a customer will need to have either a light brown hair or dark blonde, and on dark or medium brown hair you will just get perhaps some undertones. It also might be worth mentioning when using Henna you will not be able to do other services until grown out like keratin treatments, and could complicate if in the future you were going to revert back to using permanent hair colourYou also mention the only way to achieve lightness basically would be to use a bleach lightner, Obviously light brown hair can go up chewy levels when for example using a medium ash blonde colour to control gold or brassy tones. I definitely would not be recommending clients using bleach DIY At home especially at the roots, possibly just for a few painted on balayage highlights if the hair is not too dark. Otherwise great presentation and some very useful tips :-)

Love this most of the reason I use box dye because I fed up going to hair dresser that end up talking me out of what I want or saying it's not possible. Yet seem others do go from dark to blond and so on I just end up looking the same every time. 🙃

I always do it at home with box . Few months ago I did someth wrong and not sure what. I got a red / mahagony/ burgundy , I always get some red burgundy in different brands and whatever I find at Walmart 😂. But this time my hair got so dark , almost black . I still have the black 3 inch from roots , I have to do a bleach wash bc it staring to piss me off 😩. But the point is how was it possible in the first place ? To get such a black tint on my hair from burgundy box 🤔

Loreal excellence creme is a demi color box dye equivalent to the demi colors you get from Sally's. If I try to tone my hair with a box dye that's gentle I get loreal excellence creme 01 or 02. I do my roots with 7 1/2A for a root shadow. It also covers white or grey hair because my hair is naturally white. It's actually gentler on your hair then any other box dye.

Most of the time I'm not satisfied with either the cut (very badly done) or the color and all of this for around 280$. So now, I stop going to the salon most of them dont listen and do what they like or are able to do... I do my own cut and color. I manage ok with the color and would prefer more high end result like I used to have but my hair still look nice and I save A LOT !

You can also find Keune colors in Europe, I don't know how is outside EU. And they are semi or "professional". You can also find high lift series and toners. Not too expensive, around 10€. But just be careful using them on very thin hair, because the consistency is very thick.

Great video thank god someone who explains it so folk get it! Fortunately I'm pretty savvy when it comes to colouring my hair at home. Apart from bleaching and up until I started going to my current hairdresser, I'd do it myself and I've been a lot of different colours. I'm now at a level 9 and he does my roots with a 7, I'm naturally a level 3-4 but there's a lot of grey now. I bought the new loreal excellence cool colour in 7.11 and it came out gorgeous on my roots! I've got bleach London pearlescent shampoo and conditioner, and I'm delighted with the results! I fancy trying their rose and peach shampoos for a change. They're good quality and it's a nice way to have a bit of fun without wrecking your hair with colour that you can't get out without further damage because the colour washes out after a couple of shampoos xxx

Great video and great advice! Ive always used box dye. I've paid good money on professionals as well. I think the most important thing to remember is to be realistic about whats achievable with an at home dye. I always stay pretty clise to my natural shade. Also you get what you pay for.
