In my opinion, home colour is perfect as long as you don't want to change your natural colour more than two tones, especially two tones lighter. Also, people who colour their hair at home should take into account the fact that,in order to avoid too much pigment deposit in lengths and ends, which render the colour rather "opaque", must only apply the dye on their roots when retouching and if they want to add shine and some colour to the rest of the hair, best thing is using a colour mask in a similar tone after the dye application.

I sat in a chair for 3 hours every 4 weeks for 25 years until Covid. I was scared to death to color my own hair, let alone use box color having been humiliated in the past. I finally gave in, and the results were wonderful! I was very relieved I matched the color. Not only that I could do it in the privacy of my own home. No awkward conversations, no longer a victim of being triple booked. It was a revelation and quite empowering. The last time I sat in a chair I was chided for using box color while he gave me a very unfitting mom cut that took months to grow out. That was 2 years ago and I now cut my own hair too, finally looking how I want to look.

In my area, I don't know who's training them but I'm yet to come across a stylist that can actually do a one length cut. I went to college a couple of years ago to train as a hairdresser as its something I've always wanted to do. On a Monday we had the theory and a quick demo for 30 minutes which we were expected to remember for the Thursday. The tutor on the Thursday evening spent most of the time sat on the computer doing her admin stuff. She would quickly pop round to check on us and that was it. Week 3 we had clients and my client was so hacked off because when I went to wash her hair, the water was stone cold. Everyone else's clients were hacked off too. My client said to me, they don't seem bothered about training you all properly. I said to them, I know and said that's why nearly everyone in my area leaves the salons with a naff hair style/colour because they just seem to pass everyone regardless to their competence. I quit the course after a couple of months because it was a complete waste of time. I was so disappointed and its such a shame because people attend the courses with high expectations but leave feeling so deflated. I just wish I knew of a decent academy that trained people properly within the profession.

I can afford a stylist to cut and color my hair; however, after many disappointing haircuts and colors, I took matters into my own hands. For the last six years, I have cut and colored my hair. My hair has never looked better; a woman recently said your hair looks straight out of a hair ad. She was shocked that I didn't go to a professional to have my hair look this good. The bottom line is just because someone went to school and trained to become a hairstylist does not mean they have natural talent. I am naturally talented in the hair and makeup department and rely on natural skills. I have paid hundreds of dollars to have my hair cut properly, and I always left unsatisfied. I went to the "best of the best," so to speak, and was left disappointed. I go to Sally's and use the Wella Demi hair color. I will sometimes even highlight my hair, and it looks fantastic. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for what you use on your hair. It's your head, not theirs.

I had colour done from stylists and the only difference I see is the very good conditioners that you have access to. But colours don’t last better and overall I get no benefits in going to a salon to get my hair done. Not ‘demonising’ home hair colour has kept them loyal to us. Even telling them where they might have missed a bit or given them application advice also helps. We also had our client use Casting Crème during Covid, we advised on shades and had no colour ‘corrections’ when we reopened, and the clients were happy they they didn’t have to look at grey hair in the mirror. It's so nice that you addressed the social anxiety thing, I don't have social anxiety, but I'm very introverted. Im from South America so a very social part of the continent, and I least in my country there is this culture where hairdressers usually ask a lot of personal questions to be nice and make conversation, and because they do this to be kind you can't just tell them "shut up, that's not of your bussiness", so I end up avoiding them. It gets worse when you are from a small town and all the gossip spread around from the hair saloon. I don't use box dye, beacause I have a ton of hair, and it would end up being less quality and more expensive anyway, but I've been learning a lot from hair proffesionals in social media, and if you end up f up your hair at least is your own fault, and most of the times it will grow anyway.

The fun part was that I could mix my own shade. I picked a natural tone that was close to my "average" colour (so more gray hairs -> lighter shade), and mixed in a tiny bit of red to make it a bit more exciting. Worked excellent. Some people had no idea it was not my natural colour, that was my goal, so I was very happy! Now beautiful gray hair. I am 52, stopped dyeing my hair 10-15 years ago (just before gray hair became fashionable).

I found this video to be soooo refreshing because I agree with 100% of what you said esp your final words about never making a person/client feel badly about using box color. I do often hear my colleagues blame anything that comes out badly for them on the client using box color when in fact we as professionals should know how to deal with that. Blame yourself not the client. And truth be told, on a Sunday night when our supply stores are closed, if I decide I've got to do my color this minute, I've used many different box colors and had great results. There was a time when I was younger and I could not afford going to a salon so box color was my only option. I would never judge or make anyone feel badly for that choice. The secret is in the amonia %. 3% is the least damaging and comes in a plastic bottle which must be shaken well before each use. Using a good quality colour from hair supply shop like L'Oreal is probably the way to go. Use up to 3 colours for a good shade using varying amounts of each, half tsp to a tsp, mixed together with the amonia till it is a very soft creamy consistency. This video has given me the confidence to continue to colour my hair but cutting curly shortish hair is difficult to get right. Having the right set of mirrors would help. When I was growing up we had a dressing table set with two movable side ones allowing a view of back aswell. 😅😢😊

Great objective feedback. I’m not a trained colourist, but worked for Schwarzkopf Professional & learnt to colour through the technicians. I too compared colours pro & boxed and they’re virtually identical. I’m a session stylist & makeup artist..so many hairdressers have commented on how good my colouring is..I’ve used both professional hair colour & boxed. Schwarzkopf is my fav for neutral tones in boxed dye & professionally but used Casting by L’Oréal & it was fantastic as well. ❤

Thank you so much for the informative vid, and for not demonizing home hair colour. I've had some brilliant stylists in the past, ones I visited for years, but either they moved, I moved, or worse (my last great stylist died, may she RIP). However, for every good stylist I've had, there have been a handful of bad ones. Because I educate myself about colouring my dark hair to medium blond, I know the basics of levels, colour wheels, etc. One stylist I visited after I did a box dye that turned out too dark (about a level 6) thought she could lighten the shade by putting a level 10 colour on top. I told her I didn't think that would do much. She ended up turning my hair greenish without any lightening effect and charged me full price for the botched job. She may have been good at cutting and styling hair but had absolutely zero idea or training or even self-education about colour, although her bio claimed she had 10 years experience. Of course, on top of it she chastised me about colouring my own hair. When I brought my concerns to the salon owner, she ignored my message. The result was spending about $700 total and 2 visits to another salon to correct the colour (no way I was going back to the first salon). It's been a couple of years since then and I've now learned to do my own foils, toning, money pieces, the whole nine yards. I get compliments on my colour all the time, and it costs me 1/10 what I would pay in a salon. I use a pricey Schwarzkopf Blondme bleach, 10 developer for slow lift, Castings box dye, and Olaplex. I tone once a week with a vinegar, cold water, food colour rinse. My hair has never been healthier and my wallet definitely loves it. I still go to the stylist for cut/trim a couple of times a year but I don't think I'll spend half a paycheck on colour ever again.

What a lovely, informative video. I used to box-dye my hair. I actually had a horrible accident once and, instead of reddish highlights I ended up with all-over Raggedy Ann Red bright red hair 😭😭😭😭. I now go, exclusively to the salon. A lot of the reason I go is bcuz I looooove the entire salon experience. It is expensive but I just factor the cost into my monthly budget. Also, my hair has grown SOOOO much since I stopped using box dye. I really can’t see myself ever going back to box dye…..but that’s just me. No shade to anyone who uses it….my best friend does actually. First time watching ur video. Love ur approach….and ur voice !!!! ❤

I buy Revlon box dye black, I only used the color and buy my own cream developer 10v. Because I noticed cream box developer is very harsh for my hair it makes it thin and box doesn't say what cream developer volume number is and black only needs low 10 volume developer. You don't need and expensive box developer dye Revlon is great under $4 bucks once a month and 10 volume cream developer at a beauty supply is less than 10 dollars and last for maybe 1 year. So I mixed color 2oz with 2 oz cream 10 volume developer. 1 hair stylists gave me this recommendation and it has work for me fo so long no hair damage. So box hair dye trick is don't use cream developer inside due to unknown number volume for black 10v, for light brown or red 20v. For blond go to a hair salon 😂 because 30v or 40v might damage hair I only stick with dark colors 😊

First-time viewer here! I'm so sad to read the comments about people having bad experiences with hairdressers. A good haircut is priceless to how you feel about your whole look. I hope these ladies find someone to give them that. Re the box dyes, tbh I was expecting a slightly different video - from how my hairdresser explained it (salon was Taylor Taylor, I'm sure creator knows it), semi permanent box dyes over-deliver on pigment, and build up and up on your hair over time, eventually making it darker, which is what had happened to me. The salon dyes have better pigment quality and don't build up. Plus there's that flat 'all one colour' look that you get with the box dye, and you can't tweak the shade, whereas a colourist will give it dimension. You do get what you pay for. That said - I do colour my hair at home with a professional dye because it barely needs it. But I pay high for my cuts and am happy to invest in that, to me my stylist is worth every cent. I save money on other things to have that :)
@theworldofcraig8 ай бұрын
Hi there, thanks for watching. Yes, it makes me sad too but the very negative general comments are horrible. I agree, good hair makes all the difference. Perhaps you were expecting me to “knock” home hair colour…? When really they are almost the same thing - it’s the application that makes the difference…and the fact that in salon we (often not always) use several shades in one formula. The depth your stylist mentioned happens when the colour is overlapped but there really isn’t a great difference in formulas.

I have used box dyes for years and the colours are great. A lot of box dyes do have a lots of metallics in which can cause a problem in removing them and can damage your hair. Go for a good quality box dye and read what’s in the dye. I found this video very informative

You are a lovely gentleman and I very much enjoyed this video! I recently tried John Frieda Go Blonder Spray instead of heading back to the hairdresser for highlights. I have medium blond hair naturally. I was concerned that I might end up with an orange result but instead this peroxide based spray gave me a nice light gold blonde highlight. I applied it in thin sections and combed through from root to tip and then blow dried. It lightened very gradually and after several applications (I applied it over a week, each time I washed my hair until I finished the product) the color is as light as I had hoped and looks amazing! The condition of my hair is silky and shiny, not dry or brittle as it was with bleach highlights. I'm so glad I tried it!

thank you for bringing up the anxiety other than money problems of going to the salon! I'm very iffy about who touches anywhere near my head because it just makes my anxiety spike, so I've been cutting and dying my own hair at home for over 5 years now. what I do wish tho is for more semi permanent color options to be available in my region, I'm getting tired of only really seeing the 4 shades of LIVE semi permanent dyes (red, pink, blue, purple) and having the limitations of mixing my own shades due to lack of yellow in stock of any of my local or wider area stores. it's also quite difficult finding a lightener product that won't absolutely wreck my hair (last year I bleached my hair to platinum using a very strong one by I believe loreal and my wavy/loose curly hair has not yet recovered it's natural texture, thankfully my hair grows quick and I keep it somewhat short anyway) it's a lot of alchemy and educating myself on how different products work to better achieve the results I want while keeping the hair still on my head xD I have recently found out where on the packaging they list what volume the developer is tho! and I take that as an achievement

I've colored my hair at home most of my life because I never stray much from my natural color and seek to cover a few grays here and there. For the most past, the results were good! My experience with hairdressers started at 15 with a perm. It was the 80s. I ended up with an Afro! I used to have straight hair. My hair was so burnt I had to cut all and was left with 2cm long hair! It did not improve much from there. I have had so many disasters both in Paris and London Salons that I eventually took matters into my own hands. I colour and cut my hair myself since 2018. My hair is great and not burnt or destroyed by colour badly applied or for too long by hapless hairdressers! I also had cuts so bad I had to go back home fix the cut myself and on one occasion wear a hat for few months, despite just asking for a trim and showing picture for safety. It was horrendous and no one will ever touch my hair again, cheap or expensive. 🙁

@@theworldofcraig Yes, the Nutrisse conditioner is incredible. I've also wished they made a bigger one but sadly they don't. (Any advice on a conditioner with similar ingredients would be much appreciated as I've tried lots of expensive conditioner over the years and this is still one of the best things I've ever used.) The Nutrisse is also better at lifting than it says on the box; if you leave on for the maximum time (and up to 5 mins longer) you can lift by three levels rather than two. It's also one of the few permanent dyes that doesn't smell horrible or make my scalp itch and the colour is quite multi-tonal. I am a big fan. That is my problem not the box dyes, so since I realised that I buy two boxes instead of one. Often I watch certain hair people on here, who cast a snobbish comment at anyone who uses box dye which annoys me so much. I do not live near a Sally Beauty so I will visit my local Superdrug or Boots. The only issues I have with box dye is that you never know what volume developer you are getting and you don't know what kind of pigment load it has. That can be easily circumvented by testing and experimenting so you get to know the brands. Either way beauty supply stores like Sally Beauty here in the USA contain brands like ION and Wella where you can get your color and developer separately. I always recommend those to people who want to color their own hair instead of box kits, as they are also easier and cheaper when customizing a formula 🙂

Thank you. I’ve been coloring my hair at home for years. I’ve even had hairstylists compliment my coloring. I usually buy three different colors on a spectrum. When my gray roots grow out, I pour a bit of the 2 containers in a small glass bowl. Then I get a small brush like a eyebrow brush or toothbrush to mix the two liquids together. I start at the front hairline to cover the gray then draw out some of the color to the ends, about 1/5 or less of the strands. Then I follow the directions to the end. 4-6 weeks later, I do the same thing with color #2 and different long strands. 4-6 weeks later, I do the same thing with color #3. I end up with my natural color with all my gray covered, and slight variations in skinny stripes to the end of my strands. The colors aren’t so different that they are noticeable, but they are different enough to look fabulous!

I used a lot of home hair color on family members and friends as an apprentice as I just didn’t want to spend money on professional products and despite them being a bit runny or sometimes smelling more funky the outcome was always phenomenal 😂 professional powdered bleach however I always preferred because it’s not as liquid and much more predictable than over the counter and way less expensive 🤑

Hi there, thanks for watching. That’s a great idea to get the techniques down. I’ve never tried “drug store”/consumer lightener but yes, from what I’ve seen, you don’t get a lot…

Love this video! I suffer from trichotillomania and have hair dresser anxiety. Thank you for the info provided here. Can you please make a video about the hair color codes. Like 4.25, 4.15 etc❤

Thank you! Sorry to hear that, I’m glad the video helped. Ok noted - that is a little tricky as most brands use slightly different tonal value numbers but I’ll think of a way to get around it. Thanks for watching. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨

I’ve been dyeing my own hair at home for years. There have been a couple of instances in the past when I’ve paid a small fortune to get it done in a salon and they’ve messed up my hair so I stuck to doing it myself. Even though it was often patchy, I didn’t mind messing up my own hair so much as it was a lot cheaper! Over the past few years I’ve been bleaching it, and I recently had to stop as I’d developed dermatitis on my scalp and the bleach was irritating it. There was a lot of trial and error trying to get my ends the same colour as my roots! (My hair is naturally dark/dirty blonde though I’m starting to get a few greys). I initially used the Bleach London Super Natural kit which faded fairly quickly and gave my hair a slight green tinge in places (which was something I was already cautious about and the product info claimed wouldn’t happen). Then I tried their Instant Coffee colour which was slightly better but not worth the money in my opinion. I then tried Josh Wood’s 7.5 shade. I was sceptical as I could see no difference in the before & after shades on the box (I bought it online and if I’d seen the box up close I probably wouldn’t have bought it, especially as it’s a lot more expensive than box dyes I’ve used in the past), but it turned out great. It perfectly matches my natural colour and covers my greys, and I’ll definitely be buying it again. Edited to add that the last time I had my hair cut (it was a couple of months ago and just before I started using the Josh Wood dye), the hairdresser told me she was impressed that my hair was in such great condition, especially considering I’d been bleaching it at home for years.

I found this video very informative and yes I agree we shouldn't demonize box dye, not when time/money as well as difficulty trusting local hairdressers is a big issue for some. I myself have used most brands of box dye over the years but find it too damaging and I'm bored of being stuck with shoulder length hair. Spent £200 getting correction to brassy box dye, which is my fault for being picky over my ash tone regrowth, but a better brand might have saved me that cash. I think with box dye my problem is high developers being used where only colour deposit (semi-demi?) would do. 😊

Thank you so much for this, Craig! I've had to use box dye on my hair as I just can't afford the money it costs to have my hair done in a salon. I've usually been really pleased with the results from my box dye and always make sure I follow the instructions regarding allergic reaction testing. Salons charge way too much in my opinion. They're not always that brilliant, either... and don't get me started on cutting! XXXXX

Hi Jay, thanks for watching and your kindness. Glad you’ve found what works for you. It might surprise you that just the products alone (before rent/rates/staff etc etc) for a root retouch cost me about £50….

I dye my hair at home after a traumatic experience at a salon where my colour was so bad I felt ashamed to go outside, then went tk another salon forna correction and was there for hours having treatments done I was outright saying no too. I have spinal damage by the end i was crying in pain from their chairs, I was begging them to just wash my hair I didn't need a forth 55$ mask I said no to. I called my mom even though I'm a grown man to come get me as I felt genuinely scared, I was saying NO and having three people putting it on my head anyway over and over. I left with not even good hair. The third salon was good, I was honest I usually dye my hair at home because its fun and I plan to return to that so she actually sent me home with free extra dye in the custom purple she blended for me. Gave me some tips on how to do everything myself even trimming. I went back to her flr bleaching my roots until I moved and she always complemented my home dye jobs. Always asked what products I use too so she had more affordable recommendations for clients, she never pushed the salon ones on people just said if you liked anything they have it but my hair is nice so doesn't need anything new.

I'm coloring my own hair for 30 years. The times I decided to let a professional give it a go, like after my pregnancy when my roots had grown out a lot, I regretted. The technician messed up the color, gave me a really bad brassy color when I specifically asked for a cool toned no 4 brown. I already have a cool toned brown color but I have greys since my early 20's . She even argued that it's impossible to get the color I ask because it's not a natural color, as in it doesn't exist in nature. As if pink and blue hair exist in nature 😂 ... It happened a few more times with professionals basically giving me brassy hair. I just went back to box dye, no 4 . It's always a success, lots of pigment without red hues or fading after a couple of shampooing my hair.

Do box dyes say what volume developer is in there? Also, I think calling something “no bleach bleach” is misleading because it gives the impression it’s ’safe’, but the volume of developer could be super high for all anyone knows and that can potentially cause a lot of damage. PS. I’m so happy I found you on KZbin! I followed you on Instagram years ago but I ended up deleting Insta because I was sick of it 🤣

The last Hairdresser I tried was singing the virtues of a root lift product. She put some on my hair and promptly blowdried it without lifting the roots. It was flat to my head as though it was glued down. It had no movement whatsoever I realise when I got home that all her customers had very long hair and didn’t get the hair lifted from the roots perhaps as much I will not be going back

I cut and colour my hair for over 10 years. After several bad experiences at salons, some of them were expensive, I decided to give it a go myself. With the help of KZbin videos, I manage a cut I am happy with. Before, I always ended up with short hair because I had to go to a different salon to fix a messed-up hair cut at the previous salon. I have light blonde hair and use the same box dye all the time. In summer, it dries out a bit, but conditioner and regular at home trims keep it in good condition. It is a lot of work, but it is worth it. And if I mess up the cut a little, I can fix it and it did not cost me anything. Thank you for your video. It is very informative and non-judgemental. I am sure there are many good hairdressers, but unfortunately I have only had bad experiences which resulted in disappointment and dreading the next visit.
