The fact that Charlie didn’t immediately suspect Edward was abusing her blows my mind. Like your daughter goes on one date with this guy, comes home and immediately runs away, and the next time you see her she’s in the hospital because she “fell down a flight of stairs and through a window”
@izzy6240
@izzy6240 2 жыл бұрын
I saw a post literally talking about this!! Because have you thought about twilight from Charlie’s perspective? His teenage daughter starts dating a guy. They go on a date after which said daughter comes home in hysterics, tells her father that they broke up and has to leave town. The next time he sees his daughter is in hospital - the Cullens cover story is that Bella went to see Edward and she happened to fall down two flights of stairs and wound up with life-threatening injuries. Bella apologises to her father and has done a complete 180; she’s decided to stay in Forks despite being hell-bent on leaving just hours before her “accident”. Charlie being suspicious of this is completely justified. New moon: things settle down a little, but Bella is obsessed with her boyfriend. She kinda withdraws from friends, even ones she’s known since childhood i.e Jacob, and for a while her life appears to revolve around Edward. Then, her 18th birthday - the Cullens throw her a party after which she returns with her arm stitched up and bandages, no explanation as to why. Then Edward leaves and bam. Complete withdrawal. Charlie had to watch as his daughter isolates herself, has recurring nightmares and stops seeing friends entirely for months on end. She seeks solace in Jacob which seems to take her mind off things temporarily, but she’s still not the same. Then out of nowhere she just LEAVES and returns with Edward. Things are apparently just back to normal. Eclipse: right back to where things were in the first place: Bella is obsessed with her boyfriend and doesn’t really seem to care about much else, and goes back to pushing people away from her who were there for her throughout her depression. Charlie tries to set healthy boundaries but ultimately realises that no matter what he says or does, Bella will always be wholly obsessed with this guy, despite putting her in dangerous situations then leaving her for months and sending her mental stability out the window. Just as things can’t get any worse, Bella tells Charlie that she’s engaged to Edward. Breaking dawn: Charlie gives Bella away on her wedding day. He isn’t happy about doing this and still doesn’t trust Edward (rightfully so). After the wedding, his daughter goes on her honeymoon and “falls ill.” He isn’t allowed to see her and hears that her health is slowly deteriorating, and naturally he fears the worst. The next time he finally sees his daughter, she looks and acts different. Not only this, but he now has an “adopted niece”?? The point is that Charlie is a cop. Not just a cop, but chief of police. He probably deals with cases on domestic abuse on the DAILY - and recognises abusive traits in Edward. He isolates Bella to the point of codependency, she mysteriously gets injuries and becomes “ill” without reason or logical explanation, she cannot cope without him in her life and falls into a depressive episode when he leaves her. Another thing abusers to in order to trap their victims is putting them in situations which would make it difficult for said victim to leave. This would explain the ridiculously young marriage, Bella legally binding herself to Edward and making leaving him 100 times harder. From Charlie’s perspective, you can understand why he would think his daughter was being abused and the abuser’s family was helping to cover it up

The Quileute is probably mostly benefitted from the spotlight honestly, even though it’s revealed that they descend from wolves, it’s not offensive or anything. Also Edward was not creepy because he was a vampire, not a human!

@@JamesChessman ummm no…first of all, representing an actual tribe as beasts is downright disgusting and disrespectful. Secondly, In what fucking way is the quileute benefiting from this?! The implication that native Americans are actually beasts are bad enough but the tribe also literally got jack shit from this and are seen as props by some fans of the book as well as the appropriation of their culture by Meyer. How the fuck is any of that beneficial?
@JamesChessman
@JamesChessman 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kitkat_004 Sorry, I didn't previously know, until very recently, that this was perceived badly of the series. I had always assumed a few things: 1. I thought there were Native actors in supporting roles, in these movies, aren't there? So that would at least be some direct representation & employment, etc. 2. I always assumed that Stephanie Meyer must have gotten some kind of permission from the tribe. If not, then she was wrong to not do that. 3. I assumed the tribe would appreciate its moment in the pop culture landscape, but I guess that would need to be set up properly. 4. I'm not sure the werewolf thing can be interpreted too seriously, as an insult against the tribe, but obviously she should have consulted the tribe to avoid any perceived problems, in the first place! 5. Also legit, everybody looks bad in these movies, so that's another reason to not interpret it too seriously, in any particular way. Bella, main character, is vapid and miserable. Edward is a literal monster vampire. Friend circle is annoying and dumb lol. The black kid is loud and overly dramatic, as if trying to be a black stereotype. It's just a universe where everyone is disgusting really lol, including all the white kids etc. I think it boils down to Stephanie Meyer being a clumsy, naive author, more than anything. I don't think there's a maliciousness INTENDED toward anyone in the series! 6. I am very sorry to learn that the series has become thought of in terms of disrespect though. :(
@thatb1h855

@@JamesChessman Meyer is literally racist tho, the only reason there were vampire pocs was because catherine Hardwick fought for there to be. in the original novels, poc vampires lost all their melanin and appeared white w a 'faint olive skin tone'. so yea, the disrespect to the quileutes was likely malicious
@JamesChessman
@JamesChessman 2 жыл бұрын
@@thatb1h855 Yes, I've learned now that the series is more offensive than I had ever expected, unfortunately. By the way, Italians also descended from wolves, so it's probably one reason that I didn't pick up on the offensiveness there... Bottom line, she should have just done things respectfully, in the first place.

Bella is awesome in the first movie. Check out her giant mittens, and her big coat, etc. She is always trying to preserve her warmth and life energy, with these big cute things like this. Plus she often has tons of little warm lights in the darkness, especially her bedroom, but also outside places like that restaurant she goes to with Edward, and the gazebo that they dance in at the very end, etc. It's really only the first movie that has this emphasis on preserving warmth and light in the cold darkness!!

I had a great time watching you two together. I personally love this series so much cause I grew up with this but I also agree if they come out now or I just watch them now for the first time I probably wouldn’t love it as much. Especially with all the problematic things this series have. But I will always stand by my opinion about Robert and Kristen acting, they’re doing a great job for the script they were given. They’re great actors but the characters are just bland and awkward. I’m glad they redeemed themselves afterwards with doing a bunch of indie movies/challenging characters before going back into blockbuster movies, especially Robert.

I think there were lots of fantasy novels for teen boys to get into post-Potter, but less so for girls. Twilight really filled that market niche. Then there's the whole, outcast girls identify with outcast creatures element. Lindsay Ellis does a better job explaining that phenomenon than I can. It's really only the first movie that has this emphasis on preserving warmth and light in the cold darkness!!

apparently there was an indigenous actor willing to play jacob however the movies required him to cut off his hair, which was a big sacrilegious no-no in that tribe's culture, so that's why the actor playing jacob isn't indigenous

Such a bummer but also it’s not like universal that indigenous people won’t cut their hair. A. They shoulda been more accepting if their gunna rep indigenous culture. B. There are lots of other indigenous actors that probably woulda cut their hair and been great for the role. Casting was just lazy and probably racist.

I think she did well in portraying Bella. I recently read Midnight Sun and it was described that she is nonchalant about alot of things most of the time and is shy and awkward (blinks alot too). Unaware that she is liked by her classmates because of how considerate she was with other people around her and how low-key she was about being smart. In the book she was in an advanced program in Phoenix before she went to Forks.

[17:50] I totally get what Cindy meant, but...from wikipedia: "Lautner has Dutch, French, and German ancestry, and has stated that he has "distant" Native American ancestry (specifically Odawa and Potawatomi) through his mother".

"Distant". He's not Native American. Please let's not play the one drop rule. Besides someone else gave a better explanation. The producers selected a Native American to play Jacob but since he had to cut his hair in the second film and he refused for cultural reason, they decided to take Lautner.
@psychedelicpegasus7587

@@Miranda-gi9fx To clarify, I added the direct quote from Wikipedia as extra info. The emphasis on the word distant was from the quote, not something I added. I had to look up the one drop rule because I'm not from the U.S. That last bit about the other actor was interesting and I hope he went on to be successful.
