Join me today as I recreate a meal from a 1939 recipe from elite London restaurant Quaglinos! It's a decade of boom, bust, and beach holidays so grab your bucket and spade and get ready to dine out in style.
Much of my research this week was informed by P Lyon's paper 'Dining Out: Restaurants and British Society in the 1930s' which can be found online at the Journal of Culinary Science and Technology, Volume 18, 2020 - Issue 3: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/...
As always, instructions for the food can be found here: www.dropbox.com/s/4txkz8750ez...

Another fun historical video - thank you! I hope that after filming was done you had a nice, cold drink to cool you down!

A touching video, seen from our vantage point, the 30’s were doomed right from the ‘29 stock market crash. (sorry, my opinion) The main dish looked delish and I couldn’t help thinking that the cabbage, carrots and potatoes would become the staple during the ‘40’s if you were lucky to get enough, instead of off-setting the richness of the rump and bacon.

Thank you for your comment! The main dish was excellent and really not very hard at all (and caused minimal washing up for the first time since starting the series, hooray!) I'm expecting a LOT of potatoes next video.

That's actually a common misconception. In the 1930's the most plentiful meal for most were Butterfinger Blizzard's from Dairy Queen.

This was really good. I enjoyed the way you presented this. You have a wonderful way of injecting humour into your history lessons. Informative but fun. I am absolutely going to make a cointreau and brandy sabayon. 😋👏

Thank you 😊 the sabayon was really stand out - quantities make enough for 1 medium glass/bowl. It's very decadent!

@@thepastisaforeignpantry5218 I've made the Italian version zabagione (marsalla) but the use of orange liqueur sounds too good to resist.

This was interesting because as an American, I hadn't thought about the 30s from a UK viewpoint! Thanks for all the work you put into these vids! Also if you need historical fashion help in future, check out The Ultimate Fashion History here on KZbin. She's concise and comprehensive! Looking forward to the 40's next!

Are you serious? Watch some films from the 1930s to see what fashion looked like. Or even more shocking - open an actual BOOK. Google seems to have replaced the brains of many people today. Good lord.
