This was great! It's easy to disregard Fanny Craddock but she was really influential. From what I gather she made sure she got what she wanted in what must have been an overwhelmingly male-dominated industry. Great work!

Thank you! I definitely wouldn't have wanted to get on the wrong side of her. I agree that she probably spent much of her career fighting for a chance to prove she was just as good as the men, which must have been exhausting. And I guess once her TV persona became well known she couldn't really soften it for fear of messing up a winning formula!

Grow up Ellie, were it not for Fanny Craddock being her stage name our Phyllis could have been named Frances. Fanny was a very acceptable nickname for Frances until fairly recently, think about the younger of the two girls in the Famous Five book series

She was quite the woman! I remember seeing her cookbook on my mum's shelf when I was little. She was known for her flamboyant style (including in food presentation) and her sharp tongue - I don't think she suffered fools gladly. Also I think she was a bigamist too. Look her up, you'll be in for a good read!
