As always I loved this video Elly (like everyone else here). Thank you for educating us on how to fix a soap that we think is unfixable! Can one use the equipment for food afterwoods, because otherwise I have to go and buy some, and don't have the money for that yet. The spatulaer, and molds. Can one just wash it out, and use it for food again or would it be too poisoness in contact with food?

Ellie I’m as fascinated with your soap making as I am with your sourdough :) Maybe you could help me with a difficult predicament 😅 I live in a hard water area and traditionally made soap just makes everything dirty with a layer of waxy residue. That’s also why I’m afraid to use it in the washing machine (I’m assuming it’s the hard water binding to the soap). Do you know if that’s the reason why and do u know if there’s any home made soap that won’t do this (of course liquid commercial soaps don’t do that, how do they achieve it?) HUGE thanks! :)

Ellie, love your videos! You mentioned the 2:1 water:lye ratio as moderate amount of water. Actually you don't really need more water than is needed to disolve the lye plus a bit more. So why use so much water? I always use a ratio of 1.2:1 water:lye which produces beautiful and hard soaps which have very minimal shrikage % due to the low amount of water.
@amitbracha4744
@amitbracha4744 2 жыл бұрын
The advantages of using the absolute minimum amount of water are also: 1. I never get soda ash on my soaps 2. I never get partial gel when CPOPing in the oven 3. Absolute minimal shrinkage after cure 4. Contrary to what people think, using a minimum amout of water does not (in my experience) cause eccelerated trace at all, so you have more than enough time for designs.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking

Hi Amit, thank you! Yes I know all those things :) I am the queen of low water soaps! (check out my older videos). I mainly used higher water for this soap because I was using citric acid and I wanted the solution to be less reactive when I added the NaOH.

here is some additional info from Tellervo, regarding using citric acid: 🟢 Citric acid information When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap. A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water. These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap. A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases. Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level. How much citric acid should be added to soap? Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight. How to use citric acid Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils. hth

Did the Heating of the Oops Soap affect the Essential Oil Fragrance levels at all ??? Would you add more. Or was everything OK once Poured, Made, Cut and Cured. Still to make some. . . So batch watching previous Soap Making Videos. 🙃 Hope you can advise re above. Mini Question : Does the adding of your Essential Oil after all that 1500g Total not affect the end result ? (Eg Oils + Ess Oils / Water/ Lye Ratios ?) Followed the whole Video : Got it ! Now my head hurts. . . Working the Essential Oil part out when you added it as an after quantity. . . 🤭 Or does a Soap-Calc do the Maths on this too but you didnt show this in that live "Soap Calc" Screenshot 'calculation' in your Videoing ? 🙄 I'll let myself out. . . 😉

So the residue at the end , the reason it got a false reading wasn't because of anything u did wrong its because the citric acid stuck into the "added vitamin a and e" in the oils ur using that residues in the least dense parts of the soap . Once u mixed it in of u had accurately measured the ph with a digital ph tester u will find out that there are still pockets with the wrong ph etc..

Hi Elly thank you so so much for everything you do all the way from Namibia. I tried your 100% coconut oil soap and it worked wonders. I'm having just sunflower oil and a lotle bit of coconut and olive oil..I'm going to pause and try to really follow your instructions to create a soap. I'm a very much newbie but my first ever soap was a big success. Thank you from the bottom of mu heart.

Hey Elly, I have some old oils bought 2 years ago. If I use 1% citric acid and multiply the total citric acid weight by 0.624, will that be good for making bathing soap? Thanks in advance!

I just wanted to leave a quick note how you have made my life a little bit better. I discovered your channel about 6-8 months, ago. I used to purchased KIRKS CASTILE soap, exclusively. Now, I make my own. I can’t say it’s a “born again” experience, but it’s enjoyable. I don’t want to sound like a freak, but I think of your channel every time I climb into the shower. I’ve used your recipes and never had a failure. THANK YOU!!

Hi Elly, this tutorial inspired me to make my first batch of soap with leftover oils. The soaps had a whitish film on top and some grainy crystals - probably lye that wasn’t dissolved. I cooked them up today, 2 days after the initial pour, and am really happy with the cooking. I can understand how hot process can be relaxing. The only challenge was guessing how much extra water to add to the pot. For my small 3-bar batch, which is a mild cleansing soap, I added teaspoons of distilled water. Thank you very much for the tutorials!

Hi elly, we don't use any oils in our home apart from coconut and lard and I've looked at your laundry videos and I'm getting a bit stuck. As I will only be buying oils in 500g bottles solely for the purpose of this detergent. Which or what would you recommend? I won't be cooking with it so 3 different types seems a lot. But I'll buy whatever oil you would recommend.

So would vegetable oil be more moisturizing or less. I'm new(meaning I haven't done it yet) but really want to start by using what I have. I'm so confused by all of the info, yet it hasn't scared me away yet!

Hello Kelly. I made this recipe, but with 50% coconut oil, 45% sunflower and 5% olive oil, it was what I needed to spend. My intention is to make from this your liquid detergent recipe and use the remaining bars. I ask if to use in the recipe also have to wait to cure 4 to 6 weeks? And by the way, I checked the pH, is in the 9 (made 24 hours ago) will I also be able to use it in the bath? It smelled great! Thank you for all the attention. Kisses

Hi Elly, watched your video this morning the morning after making soap that went horribly wrong. All my fault. Put too hot lye mixture in to oils then when I realised trace was rapid I hurriedly moulded up my soap and put in oven heated to 170 then turned off before putting the soap in. So too hot mix went in to hot over. What a mistake to make. This morning I have a blistered burned mess. Well that was a lesson on patients. I am so cross with myself as the colour blend for my orange Halloween soap was perfect. I’ll wait longer for the lye mix to cool next time. Boo hoo 😢 I love your videos as you show us things do occasionally go wrong but to carry on and fix it if you can. Lots of love Thanks Kim

Ella, I’m new to soapmaking and I’m not sure what I did wrong, but I think the tea I made out of then rosemary water I used with the lye was too hot when I added the lye and I boiled it. The soap from that batch has been curing for six weeks and is very soft. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thanks very much I get so much useful information from your videos, especially how to use the soap calculator.

Hi Elly, can i hot process a loaf of soap that's nearly 4 weeks old? I used too much water and it oozed oils and has glycerin rivers - it was going to be amazing 😂

Hi Elly. How old were those oils? I have a 750grs botle of olive oil which I opened 3 years ago but did not use much. I kept it in a cold room. Can I use it for regular soap? I have made some soap in the pass but stop for a while. I want to re-start but afraid of using the oils I still have. Same with Lye. Does Lye get old?

When using 'old' oils, that could mean rancid oils? If using rancid oils esp. for skin soap, would seem unbeneficial for the skin ? i.e. clogged skin pores.

Thank you for sharing your time with time with soapers that are just learning.❤
