This was the exact calculation I was searching for, even though I’m using it for candles. Every guide on using essential oils usually just tells you how many drops to use in a recipe but that’s useless if you’re wanting to be accurate and/or create your blends in bulk for multiple candles/soaps etc. So thank god I found this, it was so easy to follow! Brb, just going to calculate my special earl grey tea fragrance blend 🤩☕️

Elly, I am new to your channel and since your videos are years old, I’m not sure if you still make soap. I just want to say you are a fantastic and generous teacher. Not only are you clear and concise, you provide novices with your proven recipes. So many other soap making channels (especially the more professional soap makers) do not share their recipes. Of course I understand why, and therefore am impressed by your generosity in sharing. Much appreciated.

thank thankuuu! you are one my top channels to understanding calculations and percentages. ESPECIALLY using grams [ the maths is way easier ] you have helped me so so so much. one of the eo i wanted to use wasn't on a calculator and i learned the test drop trick from another soaper. i have been researching endlessly on making sure i calculate them correctly due to their potency. now i just need to figure out how to input in soap calc or maybe just make notes because it doesn't necessarily let you know specify blends/usage rates. aywhoooo i can go rest my brain for the rest of the night.

Hi Elly, have you ever been a school teacher? So far, I find your soap making video THE BEST and how you lay out the calculations and writing them out with the formula like I do when I try to break it down for myself or others. You have made it so easy for the layman to understand and a joy to learn. Thank you so much and please keep the videos coming!!!:)

There is an easier way. Calculate the weight representation of one drop. Then you simply multiply this for each number of drops. So, your example takes 3% of 800 gr of oil, that is 24 gr. The total of drops is 8, gives 24 ÷ 8 is 3 gr per drop. Now, the weights per oil will be 3 x 3 is 9 gr for the first and thirs oil and 1 x 3 is 3 gr for the second and fourth oil. That is less percentage calculations. But your method works too. Well explained. Thank you.

Hi, working amounts out quantities per drop is ok if blending for small amounts of oil eg 20mls for an aromatherapy massage. Using drops as a measurement is not very accurate for large quantities because oil dont have the same viscosity, so some drops may be bigger for some oils than others, air bubbles can affect the amount coming through too. It's better to calculate by volume.
@Ellen_P

Hi thank you. You are an amazing teacher. I've learned myself to do it this way: Let's say 8 parts of an EO Oil Blend and 30 grams of EO needed in total. So 8 : 30=1,66. So 1 part is 1,66 gram. Than you multiply each part according to the EO Blend parts and top it up or down if your scale is not specific enough. Happy New Year from The Nerherlands😉

Hi! For the essential oil calculation, do we add it to our 800 (our oil base for example) so our oil base 800g + 24g = 824g? Or do we use 776g of oil base + 24g of essential oil =800g?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 3 жыл бұрын
No, the EO is an additional ingredient. It doesn't figure into your main soap recipe calculation. Just calculate your recipe based on 800g of oil, and add your 24g EO as an addition :)

Yes Trish, this is definitely on my list! Rice bran oil is great in soap, up to about 50%. It has similar qualities to olive oil, but can acellerate the trace a bit. You can search 'oils for soap making' and get some more ideas. This is a good resource www.lovinsoap.com/oils-chart/

@EllysEverydaySoapMaking

Hi, no, because I used the numbers of drops simply to work out the rough percentages/ratios of the oils. This is easily extrapolated into percentages to work out larger amounts which are most accurately measured in grams.

Hi Elly, I have a hard time when it comes to pick the essential oil to combine . I don’t know what percentage is safe to use from the 3 oil bases that you describe . Like if I want Peppermint / Eucalyptus , what percentage from each ? Any suggestions please ? Thank you !
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, you can google 'essential oils for soap making' to get an idea of usage rates, but I would keep peppermint very low! Say, under 5%, maybe even less! It makes sensitive skin tingle if you use too much. Just do some more searching and researching, it's important for this kind of thing. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the video! I've blended a couple batches of essential oils now (mainly for salves I've been making for a while now) and was wondering if you would share your favorite essential oil blends for soap? I just got into soap making and would love to stick to essential oils as much as possible. Some are very expensive though, but my collection is growing :) I am looking to purchase more but want a good idea of what my blends will be first. Thanks for your help!

Do the oils have a predetermined weight by drop? Or after your math, are you just using a scale to weigh the grams out?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure of their weight by drop, it's just to get an idea of proportions, then I use the scale to get grams by percentage, worked out from number of drops out of ten.

If you use a reasonably low water recipe, like this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6uni6epbs2dgdk, six weeks is fine. All soaps get better as they cure, but six weeks is the minimum cure time.

Hi Elly I hope you don't mind me adding this. For people who may get confused with moving the decimal point they can just put in 3 divided by 8 then push the percentage button this will give 37.5 no need to worry about moving the decimal point. This works all the way through and also 800 x 3 press the % percent key = 24 and 24 x 12.5 Press % percent key = 3 Regards Peter

Thanks Peter, I appreciate that! I had forgotten how to use the percentage button, and find my brain works best with moving the decimal point. Only working on very basic high school maths here unfortunately.

If one can't move a comma around two times, one should maybe abstain from working with strong bases.
