God, tell me about it right? The cult of Musk sycophants is bizarre in their level of brainwashed devotion despite the fair bit of Obvious and available evidence out there to show how wrong and highly problematic Elon is. My theory is that many of them identify with him as a "champion of the high school Nerds/Losers" who single-handedly became the winning real life comic book hero. That idea of a kindred spirit, combined with Elon's penchant for revisionist history and fabricated PR Image has led them to believe that he is a true altruistic genius who they have put their complete faith in to single handedly save the planet and mankind from ourselves. The reality that Musk is not actually doing that or the fact that he can be very wrong ( and quite the arrogant elitist) is just something that those fans Simply Cannot and refuse to face. If musk truly was who and what they believe he is, those fans would have no problem with hearing and accepting valid criticism regarding Elon and his more questionable actions.

I wish you spoke more about Grimes coming from wealth and often trivialising the class divide for the progression of their own art. I really feel for them in a sense because I truly believe they mean well with all that they do but I do also think that they're incapable of understanding why people get upset about wealth. Poverty will always be an abstract idea to them because they have never and will never truly experience it.

@@SadBugBleu To be fair, Grimes' claims about experiencing poverty without her parents' help is a "dude trust me" from Grimes. Grimes often fibs/contradicts theirself in interviews as well. There is old footage of a time when Grimes claimed to be without parents(according to a since deleted genius interview) but her dad is driving her to her shows. Also her mom helped support a venue Grimes played at, the Waldorf kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpurlap4l7ySoqs (note: Grimes also goes by she/her)

@@SadBugBleu You can look up Grimes' parents jobs and where they lived. I never said all that strawmanning stuff you're arguing against. The point is Grimes wasn't "poor" in the way that she marketed her origin story. Choosing what to believe instead of keeping an open mind is pointless here.
@Jaxzyn
@Jaxzyn 2 жыл бұрын
@@SadBugBleu I think you're the one ignoring what Grimes has said in the past. What she has said vs. what the evidence shows doesn't quite line up. I'm not talking about the landlording rumors and I didn't say she was crazy rich. Those were your strawmannig words. There is a reason why no one else on earth has said that they became a musician in Montreal without ever having held a "real" job before nor taking parents' money - that isn't a thing. Truly indie artists have all had to have day jobs at some point to support their music. Grimes did not. She got money and support from others so that she could do music. She disregards that assistance by lying about having been "poor." Grimes marketed herself as a rags to riches phenomenon and activist. But that isn't true. That's a damaging myth to perpetuate.
@Incrediblugh
@Incrediblugh 2 жыл бұрын
@@SadBugBleu yeah I get that but the history of that is kind of murky and she still grew up wealthy which is kinda the basis of what I'm saying. Your experience with money in childhood affects your relationship with it for the rest of your life. Moving out and dealing with trauma is such a common part of life and most people do it without the safety of a wealthy background/upbringing.

People don't work like algorithms, knowing how to optimise systems doesn't necessarily give you the insight necessary into already placed systems, tech bros aren't the ideal people to solve them, it's people that study and understand systems already in place. this measured take is such a breath of fresh air. I’ve been a fan of grimes’s music since I was 15 and art angels dropped, and i’m almost 22 now. Seeing the beginning of the relationship to their slow collapse from public pressure, having a child without really thinking it through (instagram 1/31/20) , and facing an unbelievable amount of hate, specifically on tik tok, has been really difficult to watch. they’ve obviously done things that warrant criticism, there is no doubt in my mind about that at all. their political takes are **laughable. but I dont think their artistry or talent is ever given the attention it deserves, and I genuinely believe people come up with bogus theories about them to justify the amount of hate they throw their way. elon can choke on a roll of nickels though.

I liked that distinction you made at the end there, “you are loved-not by me”. It made me want to laugh at first but I realized how much I expect KZbinrs to say things like “I love you guys” when that just perpetuates the growing emotional issue of parasocial relationships online between creators and viewers. I seriously can’t believe how much your content makes me reflect on my own thoughts and spurs dozens of new thoughts too.

Ok real quick, there was a lady on TikTok who had photos of her living with grimes in the “crack den”. Grimes parents bought her the house as she explains and used her money as a landlord to fund her music aspirations. Grimes called her old living situation a “crack house” in an old interview when in reality it was just a house with multiple roommates in a poorer part of town. Grimes used the money of mommy and daddy to buy a house and charge poor people rent to help her make music and fund an addiction she was going through.

OH MY FUCKING GOD THE END. Babes, this is the first video of yours that I've watched, so I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about you... but if you aren't already, you could be a director, screenwriter, and an actor. Your quick delivery of joke after joke, the emotional and almost poetic nature of the end. I haven't seen someone with so many facets of talent going into their videos before. Like, the best comparison I can think of (although y'all and y'all's content are very different) is contrapoints. But even with Natalie, I feel her videos feature entertainment based talents that branch out from each other. Yours are so... Vast I guess? Like I think Natalie can write KZbin videos, but I'm unsure if she could write the story/script for a short film. Idk, not to put Natalie down, I'm just floored by this video. I hope you achieve the level of success you desire!

"Do you feel like you need to reveal more about yourself to be truthful?" That line hit. Because there seems to be this foggy border between your true reality and then the manipulated reality that you choose to show or choose to process as reality. I sometimes lie when I share about myself, actually I lie a lot. I like to think I don't know why I do it, but I do it out of safety. Out of evading judgment or assumption about me. As a result I haven't really been able to make a friend with who I could be truthful with. I don't know where this need to protect myself comes from. But there are people out there who viewed me as a really good friend but I ghosted them because I didn't want to reveal too much about myself. I imagine that's how public figures feel whenever they try to share about themselves online. There's this fear that if you share too much about yourself to strangers then in some way it'll be used to harm you.. And in many ways it has been used to harm public figures. But at the same time, by withholding certain information, by lying about certain things you end up feeling further disconnected with your real reality. You start emersing yourself in a you that's made only for other people to experience. You're no longer truthful because you're not revealing. I can empathise with Grimes, I changed myself completely for the person I loved too. I became their sponge and I monitored their reactions to my behaviour and then changed what they didn't like most about me. In the end you realise that no amount of changing yourself will actually make them care for you more. I guess that's why I haven't been able to form a proper bond since then, I see myself falling back into the people pleasing cycle in relationships. I'm scared to be truthful because then I will be judged for something that is so important and personal to me. I haven't developed the tough skin to take that judgment yet, so it's easier to lie and hide.

This video is amazing, but I just want to note that Elon actually /did/ make his millions off of daddy’s money. There’s a great Behind the Bastards podcast episode about this, detailing Elon literally walking around Manhattan with emeralds in his pockets like a cartoon baby, but yeah his father being an absolute piece of shit does not mean that he wasn’t financing some of Elon’s ventures, in fact that’s something many abusive parents do in order to assert control/ assuage their consciences.

Also, Elon was the only one of his siblings who chose to stay with his Father when their parent's divorced. Elon wanted the comfy life he was accustomed to and was obsessed with observing/shadowing as many powerful, rich business men as possible to learn from. He did not experience any of the financial struggles that his siblings and mother went through after the divorce. Also, didn't Elon's dad pay not only for his University fees/tuition but also the initial $45,000.00 us start up investment for his first company? As much as he may now say that he is completely self financed, there are older interviews and information still around to dispute those claims. ( Even despite Musk's penchant for forcing NDA"S and silencing actual Tesla founders etc. with litigation) Nothing that he says of recent can or should be trusted. The Truth to Elon, is whatever he deems it to be due to his money, connections and reach of power.

The shot at 35:24 amazed me. The ground looks so flat, like it’s a painting or flat printed image close to the camera, rather than a shot of blacktop in the frame. I took a film class recently and it really helped me appreciate techniques like this. One technique mentioned was a frame that looked surprisingly flat-I just pulled up the textbook so I could remember what that’s called, and it’s the Godard frame, named after French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard who made shots that looked flat as paintings. Anyway, all this to say that I totally agree, Ro’s cinematography and directing are incredible and cinema-worthy, and I’m also always really impressed too!

I genuinely appreciate that you always strive to be honest and introspective. Your videos feel like more than just discussion for the sake of it. I think of it as kind of a new medium of art. Or at the very least a distinctive and affecting take on an existing format.

I agree with him regarding to Grimes. I admire her like an artist and I like her music but she clearly lives in a bubble. They way she speaks about social issues is just surreal to me. And let's not talk about Elon, he is a whole new level in detachment from society.

Dog, I was a recreational punk in Montreal in the Le Fatal building and Claire dated my roommate Gilles, who was the dude they went down the river with on a raft. Claire was never homeless, or broke, or any of that shit. They had time to just dedicate to music, and amphetamines, which is honestly super awesome and I'm jealous. We jammed a few times for a show with a couple of other people, but ultimately they dumped us all to play with that dude from Magical Clouds, who also spray painted a love letter to them on the factory across the street. Claire was never super clued in on prole shit, and now that I think about it, I can't ever remember them digging through dumpster juice for chicken with us. They're a rich gal, and that's chill, they're just doing their thing. Have they even released music past that Oblivion thing? Why are we still talking about them? They're not a home town hero, and that's okay, but they're embarrassingly pretending to be. That's the worst part. Who other than children are even tricked by their bullshit?

Your humor is so smooth and nice. It's not the kind I burst out laughing to and then have to switch the video because I don't want to watch stand-up I'm trying to grind shiny hunting in pokemon, it's more of a slowburn constantly delivering the same level of funny kind of video comedy. Also I just really like seeing your different styles and makeup! anyways thanks for uploading I needed something fun today

This video was a lot more personal than I was expecting... I hope Ro knows they don't HAVE to share so much with the audience - it does feel like a privilege to be let in to such an intimidate conversation at the end, but it is a LOT to share with the internet. I really hope Ro is looking after themselves 💚

Yo, that ending hit me hard. I've only been watching you for a few days, and like everyone else on here, I'm blown away by your talent. The amount of time and hard work you put into these videos is so apparent, and I so appreciate it. But hearing you talk about your life outside of making the videos... That was a sudden rawness I didn't expect, and made me appreciate you even more. I'm not going to give advice, because that would be bullshit. What advice could I give that would actually help. I do, though, hope you discover and lean into passions outside of this space (i.e., KZbin, TikTok, and social media writ large) that bring you genuine fulfillment. I'm amazed that you've produced this much content at such a high level of quality in the span of time that you have, but I hope your real world social relationships can blossom and thrive just as much (if not more) than your parasocial ones here. Furthermore, I think you're right to avoid that "I'm talking to someone" Twitter impulse, because once you start it's hard to go back. I won't say I love you. That's weird. I've never met you. I don't know you. And for me, love is for the real world--not the fucking internet. However, I do sincerely appreciate you being here on KZbin, because you make me laugh, and that's worth it's weight in gold. As for love, I know that there are plenty of people in the real world who do love you, Rose. They're out there, even if you haven't met them yet.

Ro, you never miss. You walk the line of comedy and tragedy so fucking beautifully. You are a talent I haven't ever seen before. I hope you do like yourself, because I would bet it all that you are an amazing person and your friends and family are immensely lucky to know you. Thank you for sharing your art with the world. It's a better place because it's out in it. 💕

hey. i've never seen one of your videos before. but the part at the end. specifically the part where you said "if you develop a parasocial relationship with me i have to stop talking to you." well. i don't often hear about how parasocial relationships actually affect content creators and their own relationships. and i wanted you to know that, well. i will never forget that quote as long as i live. i recognize the irony of me typing this comment addressed to you, Ro, the content creator, about parasocial relationships. i doubt you will ever see this. but i had to write something. i wish you the best.

The way your content is both funny and really challenging and thought-provoking is just incredible. You’re expanding on what the very idea of video essays and the commentary genre can even mean and what they should mean and I love it. There’s something so deeply human in the monologues at the end of your videos, I never leave feeling quite the same as I went in.

i'm struggling to figure out how to best verbalize my thoughts in a way that doesn't come across as though i presume to know you, or as though i have any relationship to you beyond enjoying your content and supporting you on patreon. i want to express that i feel for you and that i'm wishing you the very best and that i want to see you happy and thriving and loving who you are, but i don't want that to be taken as if i *know* who you are. i admire your content and look up to you in terms of your ability to communicate complex feelings through your work. i appreciate both your quick wit and your vulnerability. the chance that we're ever more than strangers is slim, and that's okay. just as you put out general love to a faceless viewer base, i want to put out love to you. no matter how much of yourself you choose to share with this platform, know that we're all wishing you the very best.

Every video I've watched from you feels like a jump into the crisp water of a lake after a long hike. And rising up out of it you feel more awake and alive than when you entered. By the candid way you turn the chaos of the internet landscape inward to reflect on it, it causes the viewer to fall into this slowing-down of the racing mind so overwhelming in the social media age, and reflect on their own minds. Thank you for this absolute art. It's awesome.

I was recommended this video in a list of "video essays that are like 'oh you're SMART smart'" that I had already independently discovered a good 60% of and was like. "Well I don't give a shit about Grimes OR Musk but the list maker clearly has good taste" and uhhhh I don't. Know what I was expecting. The list was correct. It just made me realise that I, maybe arrogantly, didn't think I was gonna be taught something about... feeling shit. Also hi, your writing style is so much in the best way. An entertainment waterhose, there's so much energy in the words when they pair with your performance and it is, truly, one of the most entertaining things I've seen in a while. It sucks that I'm not eloquent enough to come up with a better compliment, it's just... it's So Much. "I feel like I've just been spat out by a cartoon hurricane" much. How do you even make the words go this hard?

I really loved the last part of this video - from this side of the screen we obviously can't "know" you like your friends do, or like you know yourself, but having that personal reflection and genuine, unironic note at the end of your videos really sets your work apart and grounds your videos in empathy and personal interest in a way many commentary channels don't, which is very refreshing. Especially when contrasted with your scathing humour.

i would like to talk about this video and nothing else ever actually this was SO WELL DONE??? the way you put a discussion of “hey maybe being vulnerable about who you actually are online Sucks” right before a phone call that comes across as something really vulnerable and makes the audience feel awkward and uncomfortable and then revealing the script??? and then the bit about being cold that you carry into the prerecorded version implying that it’s also a script???? i know these aren’t super high level observations i am definitely just stating the obvious but it’s so cool and it’s killing me you are so good at this ro holy Shit
