Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! Last night I witnessed something pretty impressive in the world of tech when Neuralink's brain chip was finally implanted on a real person and they managed to actually control a computer through their mind. How? Let's find out! Thanks for watching!

Love your content Muta. I just want to give my take. As a quadriplegic who uses many forms of assistive technology (including eye-tracking), the biggest hurdle that plagues existing solutions is the translation of intent to action. This takes on the form of millisecond delays or poor movement accuracy that slow down how quickly a basic task can be completed, like moving the cursor to click and close or dismiss a popup. The longer it takes increases the amount of frustration and lowers efficiency from the time lost, requiring more steps to correct mistakes as they occur from the inaccuracy; basically it's an endless feedback loop which doesn't improve. The only way I can think of really explaining it to an able-bodied person is to imagine trying to move your hand, or any limb, and there's a 50-1000 ms delay that is inconsistent. With brain-computer interfaces the goal is to bridge the gaps so there is less overhead that causes those delays and makes the translation of intent to action more seamless. Although we have grown accustomed to meme-ing everything we see on the internet, I wish more people could appreciate how important this technology is for rehabilitation. It's not fun living with mobility impairments. Most of us (people with disabilities) live good lives, and tolerate the challenges. But having something like Neuralink's brain interface can give people with disabilities excellent lives. Thanks for sharing the news. I actually put myself on the patient registry list when I heard they're accepting Canadian residents.

my big fear for brainchips isn't even the idea of ads in your sleep, because the human brain is too weird and complicated for that to necessarily be feasible, for me the scariest thing is if they could make you feel *good*, legitimately make you happy, by electrostimulating your dopamine and seratonin receptors, triggered by you working in the amazon warehouse factory mines. Finish your current order? You get a little jolt of perfectly customizable joy. Absolutely addictive, no health complications, just the feeling of nostalgia for summer childhood early romance, the joy of innocence, tied to you working in an apocalyptically exploitative environment that you will never leave because, by definition, you will love them.
@Sir_Slimbread
@Sir_Slimbread 2 ай бұрын
I mean the idea to be able to make you feel happy would be a good thing, but it could just be used for way too many bad things like making you think you want to work more because you "enjoy" it so much(like you said). However if someone was feeling extremely down(about to end it all levels of depressed) and they could choose to click a button to make themselves feel happier, then it could save lives. It's all about regulation, but even then companies would find an exploit, or the government would fail to be in favor of the people.

Large parts of the more automatic parts of the lizard brain can be accurately reproduced on a computer with the most interesting area of research being the "general purpose" outer brain part, which requires way to much computation power to reproduce. They seem to completely understand this general purpose cortex’s structure though, these little cortical units copied and pasted over and over again in a 2d sheet, crinkled up

The first cybernetic implant was actually performed on Kevin Warwick, a British scientist and professor, in 1998. Warwick had a radio-frequency identification (RFID) transmitter implanted in his arm, which allowed him to control lights, doors, heaters, and other computer-controlled devices within his proximity. This experiment was part of his research on the potential integration of technology with the human body. Kevin Warwick is often referred to as the world's first "cyborg" for his pioneering work in this field.

I genuinely believe this is going to be a slippery slope and it’s not going to stop at helping disabled people and others whose lives it’ll change for the better This is going to start with people genuinely benefiting from this, like this guy is, and then it’s going to get expanded to other areas. When people criticise this, the dishonest response from those being criticised will be “oh so you’re saying that you don’t want paralysed people to be able to have a life?”. Any critic of neuralink will be portrayed as some heartless monster who hates disabled people who doesn’t want to make their lives better. It’s similar to smart technology and spyware. People complain about it but critics will remind you of a case where a murdered woman’s apple watch changed the whole case from “she was killed by a robber” to what it was which was “she was killed by her husband”.

But you couldn't hide something like this. Vulnerabilities in chips getting exploited because of lazy coding, ads being served based on thoughts, those are things you can't just cover up, and there would be enough outrage that there ould have to be some government regulation. Or.. at least I hope.

Slippery Slope is literally a logical fallacy not a factual argument. Do you have an argument that isn't fear mongering and speculation based on fear? No technology is inherently good or evil, they all have the capacity to be used for both. It's how the user uses them. If you're worried about technology being used in malicious ways you should move into the woods and become a hermit because it's unavoidable.

My issue lies within the longevity of the technology. The clip you showed from the Stanford University are like little prongs inside the brain. They had the issue that connectivity was getting worse within months, and after two years it was nearly unusable, because the body tried to place distance between itself and a foreign object. And to insert a new 'adapter' parts of surrounding brain matter will get injured, that's why they can't switch the hardware itself easily. As far as I understood (during my education as an orthopedic technician in germany) the hardware is more of a problem in this case, because the material needs to be able to transmit electricity and also be resistant to corrosion as possible, as well as the body not trying to fight it out. After that, it needs to be affordable in production to be truly helpful for the people who could need it. (also sorry if confusing, non-native speaker)

There's a lot of reasons to want an actual implant least of which is that you can interact with things without having to look at them or clog up the screen with say a keyboard to function. Normally when I type I am proofreading my sentences, while I type with my fingers. With eye tracker you have to look at the letters on screen to type and it requires a lot more hardware to get these things to work accurately. The tech for it is often heavy and it's limiting. Here the chip can also be used for limbs which means you can multitask and you can have your body do one thing while looking at something else which is really important and often done.
