What a wonderful deep cut for your first listen to the great Sir Elton John. For me this is his best album, followed by Yellow Brick Road. This Madman album is immaculate from start to finish. The strings and orchestration just add to its majesty, and the drumming is also just amazing. Every single song on Madman is a stellar piece of music.

Elton John is one of Jerry Cantrell's favourite musicians. The first record he ever owned was an Elton John record that his dad gave him. Elton played piano on Alice in Chains' Black gives way to blue, arguably one of the most emotional songs Alice ever wrote (which is saying something).

What Elton does is use the song to tell a story, he's the storyteller. As he sings it, he 'feels' it. Elton sings this AS the Madman. Most people covering his songs don't realize this and the songs sound flat...and when they do (like when Sara Bareilles covered 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road') they knock it out of the park. There's a song off of The Tumbleweed Connection called 'Talking Old Soldiers' where he is an old man, talking to a young man he met in a bar. Same thing.
