This is from the movie Tommy. Also in the production, Eric Clapton doing "Eyesight to the Blind", Tina Turner doing "The Acid Queen", Jack Nicholson doing "Go to the Mirror" and Ann Margret doing "Tommy, Can You Hear Me?".

Done by Elton with his original Elton John band featuring Davey Johnstone on Guitars, Dee Murray on Bass, Nigel Olsson on drums and Ray Cooper, Percussion. Performed at the height of Elton's popularity where everything he touched turned into gold records.

I had totally forgotten that Sir Elton had covered this! I played the Who’s “Tommy” so much I think I wore out the vinyl! Great request and reaction. Thanks Harri and DJ Bilodeau 🌸💐✌️

I love this version of the song. The energy from the piano completely demonstrates the action of the pinball game.

Tommy was a called a “rock opera”, if I remember correctly. I love both versions. It’s a great rock song. Thanks so much for this submission, BJ! And thank you, Harri, for your enjoyment and reaction 🥳

Originally written by Pete Townshend for the 1969 Rock Opera album, " Tommy" performed by The Who, Elton released his version for the movie " Tommy" in 1974. Elton uses his unmistakable piano style to replace the great accoustic guitar work of Pete on The Who's version. Elton's performance in the movie is phenomenal and needs to be seen. So far out and unforgettable, as is this performance. I saw The Who play this great tune in concert, 1976 in Toronto, it was such a blast and I have to say I love both renditions. Great reaction Handsome Harri ❤❤ Great memory DJ 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦

You should see Elton in the movie Tommy. He wears 4 foot platform shoes playing an oversized pinball machine. Singing this song. Loved Tina Turner as the Acid Queen. Ann Margaret looked hot . And Roger Daltrey was Tommy.

You need to see the the video of this version . It's from the movie. Elton is in hugh boots.

Elton John played the Pinball Wizard in the 1975 film adaptation of Tommy and did so, reportedly, on the promise that he could keep the Doc Martin boots specially crafted for his character. His performance in the film is a hoot. Check it out when you can, if for no other reason than to get a load of his boots. Also check out Tina Turner's performance in the movie as The Acid Queen. Fire!

A thing no one talks about is Elton's ability to sing a song sincerely, like a role in a mini-play. Here he IS the Pinball Wizard. The other thing is how amazing his band is.
@donnabert3 күн бұрын
Great song!

According to Peter Townsend, Elton and the band arrived at the studio to create this version of the song. They wrote and recorded this version in its entirety (vocals, solos, overdubs, backing vocals, everything) in less than four hours. He said in his autobiography that he was blown away at how fast and efficient Elton and the band were.

Elton had a way with covers. He really made them his own. His band was firing on all cylinders by this point.

I like that version. Thst csme out while I was in high school. On the radio sll the time
@triadmad2 күн бұрын
When the movie came out, I was unfamiliar with the album and had limited knowledge of The Who due to limited availability of decent radio stations. I was a freshman in college and I wasn't going to spend $3 on a movie that I didn't know if I'd like it. A year later, after this song had been played to death on the local radio, the on campus student union offered the movie to be seen either for free, or certainly no more than a dollar, so I went. I loved the entire movie, and Elton John's performance was the best highlight for me.

I remember this from ‘Tommy’. I can’t say I appreciated the movie but I was only 10 when it came out out so was probably too young to fully understand it. It was weird.
@slallen223 күн бұрын
Great reaction Harri! Did you notice the singers in the background during the guitar solo singing "Can't Explain"? That and the outro riff were a nice homage to another song by The Who.

Not sure why the cover of Caribou is up there, but this was a single not included on any album, until it was added later as a bonus track to Captain Fantastic

Huge Who and Elton fan here. Elton out-rocked the Who on this tune (they tried to cover his "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" but didn't match his original in my opinion).

@@TT-wb3ke It came right out of 'TOMMY' Elton's character wore these enormous elevator shoes & a strange outfit ~ I never forgot that movie it literally put the Who on the map ~ Overnight they went from competing for a piece of the market to owning it ~ Eric Clapton was also featured in the movie ~ the dual lead segments with Pete Townsend were incredible ~ lest we forget Tina Turner as the 'Acid Queen?' Got the same treatment

This is all thanks to Elton. Elton had the same producer Gus Dudgeon until the end of the 90s. In the 80s Elton had bad times and boring songs and that days Gus did not change anything in his songs😆 On the contrary the production was even worse😅
