"Rockin' In The Free World" is such a contrast to Neil's more Folksy hits like "Heart Of Gold" or "Harvest Moon", but I think it more closely reflects Neil's real attitude about the world at large. Oh yeah, and did I mention his Guitar work on this song!? BTW, Neil Young is The MAN.

It's a contrast but Neil always rocked hard. Cinnamon Girl, Southern Man, Like a Hurricane etc. That's the beauty of Neil.

When Neil Young released Freedom in late 1989 he pointed the way to the grunge era that would emerge two years later. The album opens with a live acoustic version of "Rockin' in the Free World" and ends with this electric version. Young did something similar on his 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps, which he opens with the acoustic "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" and closes with the electric "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)", the same song spun two radically different ways. Two other stand out tracks from Freedom are "Crime in the City" and "Wrecking Ball". If you wanna hear Neil Young rock out on this song, check out the live version from his 1991 album Weld, all nine minutes twenty two seconds worth of it. The entire second disc of that record is fire -- "Cortez the Killer", "Powderfinger", "Rockin' in the Free World", "Like a Hurricane". Rockin' Neil Rocks!

Check out his set from 2018 FarmAid in Hartford Connecticut with Willie Nelson’s son Lukas’s band Promise of the Real. They were on 🔥 that night. Neil was 74 or 75 at the time. I got to see him this past May. He’s still awesome.

Just want to let you know that you are always a joy to listen to. Great reflections, and you deal with tough subjects with both seriousness and humour. It’s easy to tell that you really love music on a deeper level. Cheers from Stockholm, Sweden, man!

Rocker Neil is a great nickname ! I was lucky to see him once when he was in his mid-40's and boy was that a great night. He was in amazing form in the 80's, probably the peak era of his stellar career.

A true legend and one of my top favourite songwriters along with David Bowie and John Lennon. But I also love his guitar playing, he is definitely underrated. Great reaction.

Yes. The father of grunge! Listen to Out of the Blue, Into the Black. Live Rust version is best for every song.

I saw him play this in 1989; one of the first times he'd ever played it live, before he'd released it. We'd never heard it before, but it was life-changing. The only time I ever saw him. Absolutely ridiculously loud.

I saw Neil when Patti Smith opened for him in Philly. One of the best shows ever been to. I was on the rail and my son was with me. Love to have shared that experience with him.

That was great watching you happily sing along to the girl putting the baby in the dumpster. All of sudden your brain processed what you just heard and your face just instantly changed. Dark stuff from Neil.

So catchy! Fond memories of my youth, when we got self-righteous, angry and complained about life's unfairness, all set to music. Turns out responsibility and fixing life's problems is hard work, and not nearly as sexy. To coin a phrase: for everything there is a season, but it sure is fun to resist growing up.

I saw Neil with Crazy Horse play this song back in 91 and at the end of the song he broke every string on his guitar…I’m sure Neil was very pleased at the terrible sound it made as he violently shook the tangled strings. It was epic! 🤘🤘👍👍

You should track down Young's performance of this on "Saturday Night Live" - This studio version stomps, but the SNL version is...BERSERK. Breaking guitar strings, the audience looking a little bit scared - It feels like something could go really wrong at any second, just go out of control; It was most reckless, anarchic thing I'd seen on SNL in a decade - Especially for a show that used to be all about taking chances and breaking the rules - Which is what made it great, because rock and roll and TV have never really gotten along; TV is SO rehearsed and controlled, and rock and roll is so about letting it loose and going crazy, that the SNL performance almost feels like an attack on everything TV stands for. Sometimes biting the hand that feeds is a good and necessary thing....

No. There is an acoustic version. Just kidding. The album does start off with an acoustic version. Then the album ends with this. This song wasn't a big hit for some reason. I guess a lot of radio stations thought the lyrics were too hard.
