Mulan (1998) also has one of the most unforgiving and sudden mood shifts of any movie i’ve ever seen. In the scene where the army is singing and having a good time as they march to meet up with the rest of their forces we an abrupt stop, and are shown a village that was burned down. We go from joyful and happy soldiers singing to just the complete opposite as they walk through the ruins of the village. The score goes from upbeat to depressing in a matter of seconds. They completely massacred this scene in the remake.
@mayvalley2 жыл бұрын
That scene is one of the most powerful scenes in the whole movie, in my opinion. Especially since they’re singing the goofy song, then it immediately gets cut off as they find the little girl’s burned up doll. It did such a good job showing the horrors of war just by showing that one doll.
@sebastianrubin74762 жыл бұрын

I don’t think turning Mulan into a Wuxia story is inherently a bad idea, in fact it sorta works, but the people who wrote this movie fundamentally don’t understand Wuxia as a genre. One of the core principles of the Wuxia Genre is that birth and natural talent is secondary to hard work and training, it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman, the Emperor or a peasant, if you put in the effort you can achieve great things, Mulan 2020 is the antithesis of the Genre it’s trying to emulate.

@gregorypan Жыл бұрын
It's such a simple fix, too. Just make it so every character has chi powers, and most of the army and antagonists are stronger than Mulan. If you want it to not be about gender, make it so many members of the army are female but have extremely strong qi, and Mulan simply doesn't. (If you wanted to maintain the whole Mulan crossdress plot just make the women their own division that Mulan can't join because they're ridiculously powerful, which is why they were allowed in the army despite being women) Then all you have to do is revolve the plot around Mulan using wit and hard work to outdo/keep up with those around her and boom. She's back to being similar to the better Mulan without losing the wuxia elements.

Usually, to get a good result for a movie's box office, the earnings should be at least 3 times the declared production cost. Usually, you should double the declared production cost to come close to the real movie's cost due to publicity etc... If there are rumored re-shoots or other production problems, the cost rises even more. This means that this move's box office was an absolute shitshow for Disney, after the Mega shitshow that was Star Wars: TROS, and it's their third movie that has not performed well on 3 releases in the last 10 months. Disney seems like they haven’t realized that we don’t actually want “strong female characters.” We want strong characters that just happen to be female. “Strong female characters” aren’t compelling because that’s literally their entire character. The thing that I loved so much in the 1998 movie was how it showed that what made Mulan so special was her ability to think creatively and critically in certain situations, like how she used the weights to climb up the log, fired a cannon into the mountain to cause an avalanche, and especially that whole ending scene where she devised a plan to save the emperor. It made her feel like an actual character with real strengths and weaknesses rather than just a generic strong female character. For this, she was always my favourite Disney princess character growing up because she taught me the value of hard work and dedication and fighting for what you love and that no matter what weighs you down, you can always get up and even use the things weighing you down to actually help you. The fact that this character that was meant to be an inspiration to young girls continues to inspire me, an adult male, just shows how well written she is. That's why the 2020 adaptation disappointed me so much. They took a character that I admired and looked up to since childhood and made her into a boring, overpowered protagonist with no unique traits other than that she has super magic kung fu powers or whatever. Even my little sister found the movie boring, and she's a huge fan of Mulan. I really don't have much more to say about the live action one because it was just so uninteresting, especially compared to the 1998 animated film which I can talk about for hours.

I definitely agree that her ingenuity in the first movie was undervalued, but hard work? Women work hard every day and it’s utterly taken for granted. Male protagonists get to be Gary Stu wish fulfilment characters all the damn time and no one bats an eyelid, but when a female protagonist is like that, the world gets angry. I’m sorry that I was ever rude about teenage girls in the 2000s who wrote Mary Sue fanfic; I want them to produce all the movies until we have as many Mary Sues on the big screen as Gary Stus.

The double standards this world has for women is exhausting. There are countless other things to criticize about Mulan 2020 than "a wahman could Neva!!!11!1!1"

FallenAngel We’re not mad that it isn’t identical to the original cartoon version. We’re just saying it’s a disgrace to the message it was supposed to send. Now little girls in this generation are possibly gonna watch this 2020 Mulan film as the original Mulan film and it’s gonna tell them that they’ll always be one step behind men unless they have a naturally born superpower/gift. Mulan is literally about portraying women empowerment. If you don’t care about that and just care about the making of the film in itself, then ur missing the whole point of the film. If this 2020 Mulan film WASN’T identical to the original but still managed to send a message about women empowerment, we, the audience, wouldn’t be complaining. But it didn’t, so it’s why we’re criticizing. I mean, I guess it’s a good film if you only wanna see action and fighting.

@DimaRakesah2 жыл бұрын
What I loved about cartoon Mulan was that she was flawed, but willing to learn from her mistakes and she had a good heart. The result was a character that may not have been physically strong, but was crafty and hard working. Where others only thought with brute strength, she used her head and came up with unique solutions. The pole climbing scene exemplified this perfectly. It was a problem that everyone tried to solve with pure strength, but Mulan solved it with intelligence. She excelled because she made her attributes work for her and she used her head. In the movie she excels because....... chi. That's it. It takes away so much of her agency and achievement! She's just some shell for the chi that does all the work! I find that in a lot of "girl power" movies they do this. They try to either force the character to be strong like a man, or they give her some outside mechanical force that makes her... strong like a man. In a story where women did not traditionally fight in the army for cultural reasons it just looks silly to strong arm a female character into a role without making her earn it through her skills and hard work. It makes "girl power" hollow if you're just using the story to force a woman into a traditional male role. She needs to EARN IT. That's the only way anyone is going to believe a woman overcomes the cultural expectations of her country that have existed for thousands of years. Making a character who only fits in with men because of some magical force only makes it more obvious why women can't achieve anything on their own merits.
@fredsmith-kingofthelunatic78102 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more, but I will add one thing. Be careful not to complete flip the other way. Just because someone in film is female, doesn't mean they can't be strong. I'll give you my favourite example, Vasquez from Aliens. Major supporting actor, skill set of brute strength warrior. This is in the same movie with a major female lead. Who also fought, but who's character was a scientist The writing of the script was done so well both characters really contributed to the movie, because they were nuanced.
@DimaRakesah2 жыл бұрын
@@fredsmith-kingofthelunatic7810 Oh absolutely. I find it's more of a problem in historical movies where the time period and culture made it unrealistic for a woman to be strong in the modern sense of the word. In more modern and sci fi settings it can be a bit easier to incorporate it naturally. It's one of the the things I enjoy about futuristic stories, where women and men are equally skilled and gender doesn't really play a role in what they can and cannot do. The Expanse, for example. Avasarala is a bad ass who isn't afraid to tell off anyone and she does it in a killer oitfit... and I love her to pieces. Or Draper, a fearless space warrior. Drummer, all authority and calculation. Great characters, men and women alike. They all have their srengths and weaknesses and feel so natural because they are all just people trying to make it throughlife the best they can. We're all just people. ❤

Women have earned every damn inch we’ve gained toward equality. Women fought and died so that I could vote, women have worked twice as hard for half as much as men so that I could get hired outside a few select jobs that men don’t want to do. And throughout history women have worked their damn asses off in the roles they were assigned by patriarchy. I won’t watch this movie out of solidarity for the Uyghurs but holy shit am I tired of the way male protagonists get to be wish fulfilment Gary Stus but women have to prove that they work hard, as if the whole of history isn’t proof of that. I deserve some Mary Sues as treat.

I feel this is a syndrome of all the Disney live-action remakes: They're just vapid and devoid of any soul. They're not trying to make movies, just nostalgia pandering cashgrabs (cough cough Star Wars sequal trilogy). What I find most annoying is that they try to "fix problems" with the remakes, but it just ends up completely missing the mark and making Disney look pretend woke
@KarlSnarks4 жыл бұрын
So true. If Disney cared about making good remakes, they should first ask themselves what made the original great, what the themes and messages were, and how they could translate that from cartoon to live-action (or they should just start making cartoons again, I know there would be a market for it)

The hair cutting scene in the animated movie represents her embracing change, representing a new beginning, a new her. She embraced her new self she was going to have to be to join the army, before she had to, knowing she would have to develop as a person and face challenges she hadn't had before, that's why she cut her hair. Not because it would help disguise her/make her more masculine, because, like Elvis Alien said, men had long hair in early China, so she could've kept her hair, but didn't, to embrace change and her new future self, and let go of who she was before.

To make it worse, the movie is filled with orientalism. The whole "chi" thing is incredibly misrepresented and they could have fixed it just by calling it "cultivation" instead. There are no witches in Chinese mythology, but spirits that can transform from birds to humans and shape-shift are a thing and considered evil. The clothing the characters are wearing are strange, low quality mutations of Chinese clothes, visualising this movies orientalism right in front of our eyes. It's so painfully obvious they didn't have anyone that knew anything about anything Chinese to help them make this movie, yet they expected the Chinese audiences to like it?

You know another thing I can't understand from this whole thing? Why did Disney producers decide to specifically state "having a commander that is also a sexual love interest was very uncomfortable"? Why did they need to specify "sexual"? Wasn't "love interest" enough of a description? It's not like as soon as Lee saw she was a girl he immediately thought "well, I'm gonna smack that booty, I want her I'm my bed right now!" Like, is this how they see romantic relationships nowadays? Just a sexual thing? Also, he didn't even try to pursue her while she was a soldier. Not even after she was found out to be a girl. She was a civilian after he came to her. At no point he showed romantic interest while she was one of his soldiers. This makes even less sense.
