I have the suspicion that when she is mocking her make-up (apparently it was based on real Chinese make-up, but re-created in a very disrespectful way) by demonstrating how there is no difference between her facial expressions, she was not being sarcastic. That was a legit demonstration and guide of her acting range. I don't know, maybe in other movies she gave a better performance, but here she had the same expression throughout the entire movie. The voice actress of the original Mulan had more intonations in one line than New Mulan had in a 100 lines!

"Not as bad as other Disney remakes" This is hands down the worst one, imo. The acting, editing, pacing and CGI are awful. I can never lose myself because there's constantly something reminding me it's a movie, and a bad movie at that. At least Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast showed the actors had some talent, be it Jasmine's acting, Aladdin's dancing or Beast's singing. I see pretty much no talent on screen when I watch this. I can't even appreciate the martial arts because the editing is so jumpy.
@danielscott56733 жыл бұрын
well, i won't argue with jasmine's acting or aladdin's dancing skills, but beast's singing? uh, no. dan stevens can decently act (despite the beast's cgi is hideous and his characterization's pretty off) but he's not a good singer. the josh groban version of evermore is superior to dan stevens' version, at least josh groban is a very talented singer.

Ironic how Disney pretentiously keeps on trying to depict their female leads as strong women who oppose social conformity but in the process, they're making their characters way too restricted to be only playing the flawless type that barely even acts like a human.

and it also devalues the image of femininity, strength, and when a social issue actually needs to be opposed instead of it being absolutely nothing worth wasting time on. Like 2 people in your household saying you can't be an individual while society says, "actually no, you have to be an independent person giving us money," and in the meantime the whole of humanity is asking, "what the hell is this conformity thing you lot keep hocking at us?" When people look for problems everywhere there isn't instead of seeing and addressing the ones right in front of their faces, they make a big fuss over "issues" and slights that are utterly meaningless schlock while simultaneously neglecting the actual problem(s) actively hitting them over the head with a bunch of chairs.

It's because of representation. Characters can't be characters anymore (unless they're straight white men), they have to represent women/minorities/gays. I and my classmates back in high school prepared a small amateur thater for kids. We were doing an adaptation of Mulan from Disney. Now, we were a technical school, so none of us were actors, nor were we some heavy poetry readers and such. We pretty much just watched the movie scene by scene, debated on how to put it into theater version with some comedy for kids and then moved on. For example there was that moment when Shang walks by his soldiers, examining them, telling them they will train real hard and such, but we put in a small slapstick to make little ones laugh more. So Shang had a sheated sword on hip and as he walked by, it swung up with every step, hitting every soldier in the crotch. All soldiers were reacting to pain in some comical way, just Mulan did not react at all. All without Shang noticing of course. XD Now... we had to all that and had almost no money to speak of. Instead of cannons we used those tiny firework rockets that make a ton of noise and die out without explosion. Armors were mostly just folded black paper that held together with some strings, helmets were just carton, swords were mostly wooden with only exception being mine since I had a replica at home. I played Chien-Po, being the fattest in class. And I got an email from High School, saying that our adaptation was better than the actual remake with I don't even want think how big budget and that everyone who has seen them agrees. Imagine how bad you gotta make it if a bunch of high school kids with no acting experience nor talent make a better thing than you with millions of dollars and professional staff and effects.

I've said this in other Live Action Mulan Reviews, and I'll say it here again: The biggest problem I had with this movie, is that it completely ruins the feminist and empowering message of the original, with a garbage message. In the original movie, Mulan was weak, she was clumsy, she was incompetent, she was afraid, lost, and confused. But so were all the other recruits, showing that men and women are equals, they share the same strengths and the same weaknesses. And it was only through determination, hard work, and effort, that both she and the other cadets, went from complete failures to skilled warriors in their own right. The message for any little girl watching it being a clear "See girls? if you set your mind to it, you can accomplish anything that the boys can do too" In the remake however, Mulan is a fucking superhero from childhood, able to bend the laws of physics to her will, and capable of superhuman feats nobody else can make. She doesn't earn any of her skill, she's just born with it. Which turns the message instead into "See little girls? if you are born with superpowers, you can accomplish anything! And if you don't? well, off to the kitchen with you, where you belong". And this is reinforced with the introduction of the completely pointless character of Mulan's Sister. She doesn't have any powers, so what's her role in the story? Be a glorified baby-making machine and conform to the gender norms. You're either born a superhero, or you're just a kitchen accessory. THAT is the message of this movie. This is a very misogynistic movie that has the balls to try to pretend its feminist.
@Derah_OG3 жыл бұрын
@@ichijofestival2576 I never argued that she was. Disney adaptations are very loosely based off of the original. Hercules has next to nothing to do with the actual greek Heracles. And they also LOVE invading fandoms/groups/etc under the pretense that they're fans, then bitch and moan about how the subject is until it gets changed to their liking. I love one more thing in the animation that's missing here. So, Mulan wins Li Shang's arrow challenge not because she's miraculously head and shoulders above all men and can climb the post with weights on her wrists when no one else can, but because she found out how to turn the obstacle into her asset. And then she does exactly the same in the avalanche scene. And when she loses her sword, in the fan scene. It's logical and it's built up to, it feels earned and doesn't feel like a fluke, because she'd always had to learn how to compensate for her weaknesses and work with what she's got. Because, being a woman raised in the society when she couldn't do sports and in a wealthy enough family that she didn't have to do a lot of hard physical work, when she has to compete against men who are encouraged to be fit, she is naturally the last in everything in the beginning, as you'd expect - not magically stronger than all of them. And while women tend to be more agile and coordinated, we are shown that Mulan was clumsy, so she didn't even have this advantage. So it feels realistic that she was behind everyone else. And you can see how overcoming this helps her think fast in such situations rather than panicking when she loses her strength which she never had to begin with.

I got another idea for a parody trailer that mocks these remakes: Disney Live Action Remakes 2010s edition. In which we see what would happen if the Disney hits of that decade got nostalgic enough to warrant live action remakes, and beloved characters like Rapunzel, Vanellope, Judy Hopps, or Moana we're written like the other remake versions of acclaimed Disney ladies. And then follow it up with saying that they're going to make more Disney Channel original movies like the Kim Possible one, but with Gravity Falls, Owl House, Amphibia, Ghost and Molly McGee, and other recent beloved TV cartoons, and show the girls in those shows acting like your average hokey Discom characters, like how Kim was in her film. Well, at least that joke she made about how cartoony it is that she wore the same outfit all the time won't be seen as out of place with shows of today: Stan: Y'see Mabel, that cyclops is a figurine being moved one frame at a time by a social awkward shut in. Soos: Those people are called animators.

"Dude, overcompensating for something?" Yeah, the lack of a good script and character.

Disney's interactions with the CCP around this movie, both with the filming location and the lead's comments on Hong Kong, are the reason I won't get Disney Plus. I wouldn't have watched it even if it was good.

Has anyone actually seen the movie that China itself made in 2009 called "Mulan: Rise of a Warrior" ? China actually BEAT Disney by 12 years through the REAL live action adaptation. It was everything we wanted in a Live Action Mulan.

@@oliverrumagit3781 YES!!!😃 THANK YOU!😆 That's exactly what I'm saying. Honestly, your're the first person in this video's comment section to give me feedback on Rise of a Warrior. I don't care if I'm accused of "spamming" when really I'm just asking different people in different comment threads of this comment section if they've seen it, I NEED TO KNOW THAT I'M NOT ALONE. The Critic himself never pointed it out, it's that underrated. So thank you, THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY!!!😆😃😊👍❤❤😇

@@ellugerdelacruz2555 yes i watched it 3 times already with the 2009 remake rise of a warrior it has a lot of messages there. 2009 vs 2020 i think 2009 wins for the messages and representation but for cinematography 2020 wins❤
