For two months now I've been spending about $140 a month on once a week Chinese lessons (1 hour each time). She's been my Chinese teacher for like 5 years, and after a break of self-studying (after taking group classes with her for 2.5 years) I wanted to do 1 on 1 questions, review my characters, and focus on speaking and vocabulary. I'll probably do it for another few months and then go back to self-study - I agree you don't have to spend any money at all, there is so much free content! (I speak English, French and Spanish, and learning Chinese ✌️)

Currently learning German and the only money I have spent is on 4 books (im a book guy rather than lesson guy), I also listen to and read German media e.g music, podcasts, articles, news etc. For everything I learn I write in a notebook which I already had so I didn't need to spend any money on that. And yea. Great video, loved your video on how you learn German, very helpful. Keep it up!

thank you so much for touching on this subject! personally, i think that the cost when learning a language is really dependent on which language. for example, i essentially learned french for free (besides the sporadic book purchase) whereas learning colloquial tibetan has been quite a bit more expensive. since there are a lot fewer resources (and extremely few online resources), i ended up dropping around €80 on the ‘manual of standard tibetan’ (which luckily ended up being an excellent resource). and especially when it comes to learning classical languages like classical tibetan, i think it becomes even more pricy since the majority of resources are physical textbooks and dictionaries, many of which i’m not able to find through my library :P

Great video. I have paid for Busuu, drops, duo, tandem and Ling in the past (not now) I use free duo, tandem and busuu now. I probably would have bought LinQ if they had a better trial. Text books from eBay are a weakness of mine (whether I use them, different story) I have 5 lang exchange partners through tandem. I love them though it took a while to weed out the horny and the horrible. I have $80 on italki. I love YT for lang learning. I consider myself a budget learner. Thanks for this video. I feel like the internet language learning community avoids talking about money because they don't want to discourage broke people from trying to learn and/or feel like it's shameful they had to pay in order to suceed. Really, it's completly fine to invest in your hobies and give people tips on how they can improve more easily (because realistically it's much easier to improve when you pay for certain resources) but it's also good to put up a reminder that you can absolutely learn a language for free
@Ants-ed3vl
@Ants-ed3vl Жыл бұрын
Honestly learning a language completely free is rly difficult and exhausting, I feel like I could speak and understand German so much more if I was able to pay for lessons and resources. Its kinda upsetting but I’m still trying to learn, I try my best to keep at it and I’m still learning but this rly makes we wanna make like a platform that could rly help ppl to learn languages completely free, although I don’t necessarily have the skills for that it’s just nice dream that I have. it’d be very interesting to see you try and learn a language completely free for a month or something, as a challenge and update on your channel your experiences and what recommendations and recourses you’ve found, that could be interesting and refreshing to see! I feel like every polyglot online just pays for lessons which is fine but not everyone can do that and I sometimes find the advice that’s given somewhat useless if you don’t pay for lessons already
@erburu
@erburu Жыл бұрын
In fact Clozemaster only lets you "play" 30 sentences per day with the free version, which kinda sucks. Paying for something in dollars while being a college student in Argentina is not always viable. But oh well, I do those 30 sentences and then move on to my other resources haha. I'm learning German and I only spent money on a grammar book, which I find essential. Then I just use a variety of free apps, KZbin videos, and Steam games, which are way cheaper and I've found to be a great way for me to remember vocabulary and analyze grammar :)
@elyssespeaks
@elyssespeaks Жыл бұрын
30 new sentences per day is more than enough IMO because research has shown you can’t effectively retain more than 15 new words a day- you don’t really need to overload or practice nonstop

I spend about $80 a month, including 3-4 italki lessons ($10/lesson), one app ($108 for the year), and 2-3 in person language meetups ($5 each), and probably a book ($20). It does not count my subscription to Netflix, where I watch 1 or 2 foreign movies or series a month, and possibly LingoPie, which I'm considering getting. It does seem like a lot now that I think about it. But my social life runs through my language exchanges, and books get more use than a movie. If I had to drop anything, it would be my app. But then I would probably substitute lessons or another book instead.

Personally, I spend between $100-200 a month for private italki lessons, as well I’m paying around $50 a year for a Lingopie subscription. In short, yes I spend quite a lot on languages, but as you said, it’s my main hobby and for me it’s worth it. But as you mentioned yes, absolutely it’s 100% possible to learn a language for free. However, paying some kind of money does give you a slight advantage - gaining access to extra features in an app, private tutors (which have been the best source for me), etc. Super interesting video! I respect that one spends money on it if one wants and can. But I have mostly studied languages from free online resources, free versions of apps, second hand textbooks and reading books and just youtube/insta/spotify/etc. content both from natives and also from teaches of that language. I just take screenshots of their free lessons content or take notes from their videos and then surround myself with the language in anything and everything I do. For some languages life has taken me to the country and made things easier, but for others I had null experience talking until I had a random opportunity with a stranger in real life and found myself being able to talk (not perfectly and not confidently but nonetheless). Talking to myself and journaling in my target languages both helped me inmensely in the process (as productive skills that are easy, free and always available). So I would like for anyone out there to feel confident that one does not need to ever spend a cent to learn languages to a decent level. From there you'll need contact to natives, but that doesn't need to require money either (depends on many factors tho).

Hi there ) I think, at the beginning , anyways you gonna spend some money for a language learning. Personally, I spend money for each language that I have learned, but of course, the range differs depending on the factors such as the language itself and the duration of classes & materials that you use. I believe that a language learning is an investment which means that it requires a financial input :)

I don’t spend anything because I make my parents pay 🤩 no but I only have a few books and don’t use subscriptions so I’ve spent probably around 50$ ish for my 4 Korean books and my German books are hand me downs 🤩 I have one from before the wall fell so… anyways yeah KZbin, TTMIK and their textbooks, also hello talk are all really good for me (I say not being above beginner in either language so that might chnage when I need more than what that can give me) also thinking of going abroad to study the languages in their countries so that would be a lot. I’m definitely not apposed to buying subscriptions but I don’t have any income as a 17yo so… just can’t
