My drinking two cents: My dad let my friends and I drink in his basement. He knew that we were going to drink anyway so he wanted us to be at home so he could keep an eye on us. He even made sure to take our keys so we couldn't drive anywhere.
@korubi_eCSTatic3 жыл бұрын
I knew so many people in college with super strict parents and the kids ended up going absolutely insane with the booze once away from home. Binge drinking, drinking and driving, alcohol poisoning, so many middle of the night hospital trips and combing the streets looking for people who had run off drunkenly from parties and passed out in fields and so on. I haven’t thought about this in years, but it was absolutely terrifying in retrospect. Those of us who had at least one friend’s parent in our social circle who let us experiment with alcohol under their supervision before the college years seemed to fare better because it wasn’t this huge thing that had been totally verboten so 1) we had a better idea of our limits, 2) it wasn’t so mysterious that we felt we had to get it all in at once like each party might be our last or something and 3) didn’t feel the need to go crazy as some form of conscious or unconscious rebelling against strict constraints imposed upon us. I know that is totally anecdotal and there is no easy answer to any of this, but it’s something that I feel like should be addressed with at least better education about it, in a way teens/young adults and parents will actually take in. I say that because it’s not like there WASN’T education via PSAs, very special episodes of tv shows, lectures etc etc but clearly it wasn’t reaching everyone or done in a way people took on board.

@@korubi_eCSTatic I appreciate your story. As a young adult who grew up with strict parents I can attest to doing a few reckless things. Having been born in the original St John's Hospital (now closed down and rumored to be haunted) in Oxnard, and gone to Neptune's Net starting before I can remember up until months before I left Cali, I was so delighted to hear you talking about it. I've been in Canada for over 3 years now. I still remember my mother loving to tell an anecdote about a boy she was dating telling her about this fancy sea food restaurant he was planning to take her to. Turns out it was Neptune's Net, and she thought that was so funny because Neptune's is definitely not fancy but a fun little shack/dive on the side of the road back then (still not fancy today and in fact just barely refined over the years which adds to its charm). Anyways, I have countless fond memories of countless people sitting on countless benches at Neptune's Net....and then walking across the road to wander through the tide pools. Pure California Magic....and I didn't even get started on the motorcycle brigades filling up the front parking lot. In the good old days it was a classic watering hole for motorcycle clubs to hang out and show off their beautifully babied bikes to locals and tourists alike. Nowadays, well....before the pandemic...as long as it was a weekend (or just in the summer) and the weather was good you could drive on down and find at least a few Harleys, Hondas, Crotch Rockets and more parked out front and a line of people ordering beers and sea food -- and your only worry is whether there's some decent seating in the shade available. Either way, you can literally hear the ocean, its scent delicious on the wind as it plays across your lips.

I didn’t understand social shame/bluntness until I was much older (mid 20’s). I was the kind of person who would have to explain through a joke or a sarcastic comment to laugh at it at the end. But I knew people would set me up sometimes to get what THEY wanted to say through me. At a church dinner, my pastor wouldn’t stop talking about himself and nobody could interrupt him out of respect. But 2 hours in, we were done with dessert, and done with tea, and he was still talking. I didn’t particularly care or notice until everyone kept glancing at me. I ended up saying “everyone keeps staring at me. Is it because the pastor won’t stop talking and they want me to say something about it?” That immediately shut him up and erupted a laughter. My pastor now keeps telling me “I promise to keep my mouth shut during dinner. *wink wink* “. Its been years.
