I don't think its as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. I never use coffee mugs, preferring my coffee with copious milk cold in a mason jar. However, for someone who uses a coffee mug everyday or multiple times a day and needs their coffee hot, I think it's probably well worth it.

@@johnree6106 I have a couple thermoses, the problem is that coffee stay too hot a little too long in the thermos, so I often end up doing other things while it cools, and I tend to get distract very easily and lose track of time. By the time I get around to it, it might have already gotten past that ideal temp and gotten too cool. I'd probably say having it in a thermos for me is worse than having it in a regular mug. The ember solves a problem for me that I understand not everyone might have. First world problems I know.

I love this mug. I picked it up from Best Buy, (deal of the day) at over 50% off. One thing I had to get used to was, in a typical mug, the last few sips of coffee are usually cold. But that is not the case with the Ember mug, I had to remember to drink those last few sips like the first.

Yep! Specific heat for water, or the amount of energy to raise a given mass of water by 1deg Kelvin is 4.186 kJ/kg•K. Quite a bit higher than say aluminum which is around 0.9… Quite a bit lower. Im actually impressed they were able to fit a battery small enough in there with that much energy capacity to heat liquids up for ~80 minutes, especially considering energy conversion losses.

The only issue I have had is the contacts on the bottom, they eventually lose the ability to charge the mug so you have to repair it. Otherwise it actually works as advertised.

I bought one of these mugs, as well as one of their travel mugs, for my husband and he LOVES that they keep his coffee warm! The only downside we've found is that the lid for the travel mug has a weak point and breaks after like 3-4 months. We've had it replaced - great customer service! - and also bought a replacement. I think he's gone through 4 lids in a year'ish, that's not a good design. The cup is usually on the charger, so no comment on how long it takes to run down.

I have this mug and it’s not designed to heat your coffee up. Most coffee after it’s brewed is at around 150° and it cools down to your temp in the mug. Heating up the liquid would definitely reduce the battery life since it’s working so hard to heat the coffee up. Also, the paint chipping complaint was about the previous model. Same with battery complaint. (I did crazy research when I bought mine. From a coffee snob perspective, it taste better over time than other ways of heating as well. I do think the mug is alittle over priced though. I’d feel better about it. As for the cheaper heated pad, it heats the cup too aggressively. Tastes worse.

Only issues I’ve had are sometimes it doesn’t detect liquids and there can be condensation buildup on the coaster near the contacts, which needs wiping every so often. Works great for tea and black coffee, but creamers can separate out and skin over after a while. Great to receive as a gift (or stolen) but not something I’d buy for myself!

As a three year owner of several Embers I think there is a learning curve with the Ember. The newest one I bought several months ago at Costco for $99. Worth every penny in my opinion. As for how long the battery lasts I don't know. I spend about a hour every morning drinking coffee and it retains the heat to my preset temp of 138F for the entire time. I set the cup back on the charger and it takes about an hour to charge it back to 100%. I have had a few problems but were quickly and professionally take care of by Embers Customer Service. It's not perfect but to function as stated as long as I have owned the mugs it's nothing short of a miracle considering the electronics and the engineering that went into the design.

I wonder what the differences between that mug and an insulated travel mug? That mug will keep warm till battery runs out, but the travel mug doesn't have a battery and just insulates.. So if the £20 travel mug is drinkable after 2 hours and ember is cold after 2 hours, the travel mug wins imo.

They can also keep hot infinitely when connected to their charger. My mother is a coffee fiend and I got her one of these last Christmas because she'll brew all her coffee at once and drink it slowly throughout the day usually with snacks and certain meals. Basically insulated mug keeps the drink at a temperature too high for too long. This thing is really aim at the coffee brewing crowd, that when the coffee just finished brewing, it's way too hot for most people to consume if you want to actually taste the coffee. If you put the coffee in an insulated tumbler at this point, it will remain that too hot temperature. However if you pour it to a regular mug, it will gone cold quickly and a lot of people would find it not tasting as well. So you got stuck in this tiny window for coffee tasting their "best". This mug is basically a device that let you always have your coffee at your most preferred temperature. Is it for everyone? Probably not. Even the hardcore coffee snobs debated if this thing is really necessary. But it has its market and it seems that everyone who got one enjoyed it. I personally don't mind cold coffee, but I got gifted a temperature control mug similar to ember (heating element inside the cup, but no battery in cup so it must be on the coaster after sipping, and no Bluetooth) and I have to say I really enjoy drinking my coffee and tea this way. Having the ability to drink from that perfect temperature every sip is surprisingly more enjoyable than I imagined.

For coffee lovers this is a better option than a heating coaster because a heating coaster doesn't take the temperature of the liquid and has to heat above the target temp which can cause coffee to go bitter and almost burned. I on a whim purchased this for my mum on her birthday, who likes to drink her tea upstairs but sometimes forgets about it. I used it one night and oh my god, after that I used it 5 nights in a row then my mum uses it in the morning. It was the best purchase I've done withuout ever looking it up. I knew it was exactly what we needed. It's a mug that you know, if you will find it useful or not. If you think its pointless then its not for you. But if youre someone who forgets their tea, or has the kitchen downstairs and drinks it upstairs. like your tea staying at a certain temperature/drink too slow. then its worth it. I am absolutely mind blown with it and wished i had it for the winter! Every sip up until the last even after an hour you make it, is like the first sip of tea. blissful I went and bought myself the bigger mug for my own birthday ahaha

I'd love to see a comparison to a vacuum insulated mug or even a ceramic travel mug. Those can keep drinks hot for hours for a fraction of the price. I guess the only advantage the Ember would have is being able to raise the temperature slightly, but is that really worth $100+ extra?

This keeps it at a specific temperature, some people prefer very specific temperature ranges for their coffee. It also doesn't require a lid to maintain the temperature (not that that means much). It'll also slowly heat up colder coffee without destroying as much of the flavor as a microwave would. With that said, the app stinks and it's hit or miss if it'll actually connect to the mug without having to reset it every time

@@The9853 Seen this argument a few times, but keeping things at a specific temperature is what insulation does.
@The9853
@The9853 3 жыл бұрын
@@NickCombs hypothetically, yes. But your insulated mug isn't perfect, it loses heat constantly. On top of that, if you put freshly brewed coffee in something well insulated, it could be close to an hour before it's at a comfortable drinking temperature, once it finally is, it's a race against the clock before it falls out of the optimal range, and once it does, you'd have to dump it into a microwaveable cup, reheat and start the process over. Of course that's really only an issue if you're serious about your coffee. I like knowing it's at my set temperature, and is going to stay there. But then again, if you are really really really into coffee, you enjoy the flavor changes as it cools to experience all your coffee has to offer. And if you let it sit in the ember mug with only a little left, it starts to get the gross burnt flavor eventually. But I shut it off or turn the temp down if I don't finish it off.

You reviewed something which I have been using daily for over 18 months. And it is seriously one of my “gadgets” that I use everyday. Which I didn’t expect. I agree on the price but I splurge money on “gadgets” anyhow 😉 As I like to drink tea in the morning at 50C (122F), the Ember is perfect as it is a warmer which you explained very well. So the Ember tells me when my tea has cooled enough (which is very important to me) as I don’t like piping hot tea. I do like a hot espresso or two after my tea so the Ember isn’t really of benefit there. Something that avoids me getting my tongue burned, is also a huge pro. Although it is pricey, I would recommend the Ember because for me it has become a very useful “gadget”.

My thoughts after watching - Because we have more than one mug around the house we have coasters in different rooms. So we aren't really tied to one spot and can top off the charge often. Your review could have shown more of the app features such as the different presets you can use for different drinks and the tea timer or the tracking of caffeine consumption. (might be Apple Health feature, not sure about other phones) Also, the mugs aren't really meant to heat from lower temperatures. *shrug* Anyway, you are one of my favorite reviewers and your review is better than others I've seen who automatically dismiss it because of the price to treat it as a joke product.

Always way too hot. So I have to put ice in it. Which means when I taste it one of two things happen. Its too hot still and I burn my tongue and can't taste a thing for hours. Or. Its too cold and I have to microwave it. Then 50% of the time, you repeat that same problem after. This? Solves those problems. AND has the same benefit of a thermos. Its a bit expensive. But once these can cool down coffee to the temp you want. It would be worth it just for the lack of hassle every morning

I got one of these as a gift from work, and I use it every day for my coffee, I gave up on the app as it wouldn't stay connected to the mug, I just set my temperature to 145 and haven't touched it since. If you put a coaster over the top of the mug it takes far less time to heat room temperature up to 145. I would never buy it for myself, but as a gift it's definitely an awesome product, even if the bluetooth is flakey.

James Hoffmann did a video on the Ember a while back - it made an appearance in another video recently and was still working just fine. It's one of those things that's conceptually so simple that there really isn't much to go wrong on it in the first place. It's for sure overpriced, but it at least seems well-built.

I wouldn't buy a $130 coffee mug even if it came with a $100 bill inside lol

I would pay $30 for this if it had inductive charging so the coaster was waterproof.

I would take that deal. I am amazed how much people will pay for an ordinary coffee mug,

I agree with all the comments and I have want to add. After a few months mine would not heat up anymore. It turned out to be--one of the pins was depressed and not making contact with the mug. They sent me a complete new mug and plate at no charge. Very impressed but I guess they can afford that because of the initial expensive cost. My second mug did the exact same thing. Maybe the weight of the mug has something to do with it. I decided to go to Walmart and try out there $40 model and two months into it… Working just fine.

And add cream and sugar. It also should make lattes and cappuccinos, and it would still be too expensive.
