Hi Kelly - oh how I needed your story time today. I 100% to the tenth power that everyone has the ability to create something beautiful. I encourage everyone find your sweet spot, play, make mistakes, some things might end up in the circular file but then you will create something that wows you and others. Now on the to "don't let anyone steal your joy". My creative joy is tenfold as matter fact as I watching this video I was building a little LEGO rabbit. Yup at the tender and amazing age of 73 I began to build LEGO items!!!! Today I truly felt the loss of joy - seemed that I could not find God, could not hear His voice, and felt more and more lost in the wilderness. And then......here comes Kelly - right on target - bringing joy into my heart again. Thank you so much - will check out some of the Honey Bee products. In closing I am sending hugs and love to your and the amazing Taylor family.

Love the bluebirds. I can't tell you how many nights I was in tears while doing dishes with mom during elementary school. Hearts are so tender, and words are seared into them at that age. Thankfully, mom reinforced you can do anything if you put your mind to it every time. I remember the hurt like it was yesterday but rarely let it slow me down. Excellent story time.

I had that in grade and high school. I can’t draw a straight line, but I tried my hardest. I always gave my kids creative freedom. They might not be the best, but I cherish the love they put into their work.

I love your cards, you’re the best colorist! Grade school sports were awful for me. The humiliation of always being picked last was devastating. I told my son about this experience and it touched my heart when he told me he picked “that kid” first💗.

A beautiful trio of cards, Kelly! I had a teacher like that and my mom, who was very supportive of teachers, gave her a stern talking to about never telling a kid that they couldn't do something. The teacher had told me I would never be a top notch flute player which devastated me but I went on to sit first chair so I guess we showed her!

I completely agree with not letting someone else steal our joy. I think the real talent comes when a person can give you constructive criticism to help you grow in your craft. I have a friend who has a lot of experience with multiple mediums. She is really good at giving me the feedback I need that has helped me grow and improve.

I had the same experience with an elementary school art teacher. I am left handed and when I was that age in the Dark Ages, teachers tried to change you into being a right hander. She did nothing but criticize! I decided to be creative and artistic anyway…..mainly to make her mad!😊. If i had let them change me, I would not have the joy of creating that I have. I am certainly not one of the best, but I enjoy the process. Thanks so much for talking about this and letting me know I wasn’t the only one out there with this experience!

Sometimes it’s so hard to push through when someone has discounted what we do. I am blessed as I do love to color and just keep trying - it’s not always fab, but I don’t give up. Teachers have a huge impact and can motivate others or discourage - they are more impactful than they may know. God bless them - it’s a gift !! Love the card and thanks friend!!

My heart aches for those who were bullied by teachers, or others, into believing they weren't worthy of creating art and have missed the joy!! My kindergarten teacher constantly told me I colored wrongly because my strokes weren't all the same direction. As an adult I learned that I was cross-hatching. Thankfully, even then I disregarded her comments. I went on to major in art in college and, though I am not employed due to health issues, I use those skills to make several hundred cards a year. Your cards are a joy, and storytime is a fun part of the videos. Thank you!

Same, my 7th grade art TEACHER Ms Grafton was very critical without TEACHING . Never enrolled in an art class again. But I still am very creative and love to try new things. I suck at water coloring but I still try, that's why I love watching your videos, I learn a lot from you. Thank you!

Those birds are the cutest! The teachers weren’t my issue, it was other students. I had moved to a new town and school system to start middle school. I knew no one, nor did I have the same types of privileges. I was easy pickings to being made fun of. Such is life. What I did have was a creative gene pool and a mother whom encouraged are interests in arts.

I can totally relate to your friends experience with art at school. I was 11 y.o. when I started high school (in Australia) and the art teachers seemed to feel that their way was the only "right way" to make art. I used to get physically ill at the thought of art class. To this day (I'm 58) the thought of having to draw anything makes me literally freeze up. The up side is that it made me very encouraging of any of my children's efforts - artistic or otherwise....and they are both creative people. Love all of these cards Kelly.

Breaking this into a different comment because your Ted Talk today is SO important. 😀 This is in regard to texture. Texture is very important to me. I grew up being “arty,” though I really didn’t think of myself that way. I drew a great deal in my teens and loved all my arty subjects in high school art classes - clay, watercolor, acrylic paints, copper embossing, etc., etc., etc. Loved it all . (I graduated in 1970.) Continued a little into my early twenties with macrame and 3-D decoupage. (Notice the theme of texture.) Then life intervened and I “fell out” of art. Forty-ish years later, after another lifetime of working with computers, I got into computer art. I was very good at it and did some tutorials, built beautiful websites, etc., but even though they looked very textural, when they were printed out they were absolutely flat. Finally, one day when I went into a local small town printer’s shop for large format paper for a charity calendar I had put together for my Mom’s sorority, I found they were having a class of some sort - I think it was a card “class” using a card kit. I bought the kit and went to the class, met like-minded people and saw the magic elixir of heat embossing, found a local card making/exchanging group and a joined Yahoo group that had swaps for artist trading cards and 4x4 cards. FINALLY I could get back to my original artistic interests AND I was again hooked on texture. That was in about 2012-2013. Hmmm, I think I’ve now come full circle to your talk today. But in my case, no one told me I wasn’t good enough - I nearly talked myself out of it. “I don’t know how anymore.” “I don’t think I can do that.” “I can’t afford the supplies.” “I don’t know where to get that.” (Remember that KZbin wasn’t around yet and Amazon was still mainly a bookstore.) I guess the moral of my story is the same as yours - if you have the interest, JUST DO IT! Don’t worry if it’s good enough. If you like doing it, that is enough. (And you do get better with practice. 😀) Now, ten years later, I can do anything! I may not be good at it and I may decide to switch to some other media, for example, but it’s MY decision to make - no one else’s! I was reading about a pianist a few weeks ago who was told that he was not good enough to ever think people would want to listen to his music - that pianist was either Mozart or Bach - I can’t remember which, but the story certainly stuck with me. What the world would have missed had he given up because someone else told him he couldn’t! Sorry for the “book” but you made me think a lot about my life - a perfect Ted Talk! ☺️

I can very much relate to people who say that your work is horrible, I am dyslexic and went through school being told that I was lazy, as I could not spell , read or do maths like the other kids at school. I had to repeat year 4 three times before I could go to year 5, I was 15yrs old when I went to High school ( middle school ). After two yrs there I left school and did my best to get a job. I was always being told you are not good enough. I NEVER GAVE UP, At 24 I got married had two beautiful boys. When they started learning how to use computers they touch me, I was very slow at first but I managed to pick it up, I then went on to do my Nurse training with the help of my husband and eldest son , they would proof read my written work. I became a Nurse . My youngest son turned out to be dyslexic but with a lot of encouragement he is now doing well. I encourage anyone don't give up there is always someone to help you, all you need to do is ask. I

Beautiful colors. my favorites.. Love the cards. great story time. I remember in grade school.. I am left handed and that was a no no.. we're talking in 50's.. so many many years ago.. but those desks that only had right hand arm area.. and scissors and such only for right handed people. I remember learning letters and some of the letters were backwards.. I don't recall art time with issues but the left handed issues.. getting in trouble using it.. I think that's why I can use both hands on some things.

I was lucky never to have anyone get down on my creativity or the products therefrom. I had quite the opposite experience. Whether it was art, piano, or whatever, adults in my life always supported & encouraged me to be creative. My high school art teacher once told us that when she was in elementary school, her teacher used to go around after school & "correct" the students' artwork they had created that day. Which shocked me! The only "difficulty" I ever had with any teacher all through school was if they were boring or less-than-helpful with assigned work - or even worse, both. But I can't even fathom a teacher going off on a child, especially repeatedly, for not being "correctly" creative, athletic, whatever. If I had any "enemy" in school, it was just myself, since the farther I went through the grades, with adults telling me how good I was at anything & everything, I developed the belief that no one could be that multi-talented, smart, etc. - certainly not I. But I was certainly alone in that belief in my situation, at least for the most part. Anyway, I love how your cards turned out, Kelly. I was a bit surprised that you were able to die cut the panels you'd embossed without squooshing the texture. I've always heard to die cut first, then emboss. I may have to try your way, just to see if I get similar results. Those little birdies are so cute, though, & I love how you colored everything. Thank you for sharing. Take care, & have an awesome day! :)

YESSSS! I was able to emboss with a stencil with my old Cuttlebug. Here is the sandwich that worked for me: from the bottom: A plate, metal shim, B plate, cardstock (spritzed on the back with water - a very important step), stencil (place the “right side” down because the design is pressed into the paper), rubber mat, B plate, cardstock shim. Thank you, Kelly! This will definitely allow me to get more from my stencils.

Again, beautiful cards. I love the designs. I was in high school in the mid to late 70s, and I had a very similar experience with my art teacher. He told me that I was a waste of time and I couldn't even get my children's coloring book done well enough to pass and told me to sit down and work on my other classes work. I am 100 percent sure that that experience is why I am never happy with anything I create. Very sad.

They really added a lot to your cards - they gave it a little bit of a vintage look. Eeek - I might look into buying a few of the Sketchmarkers to fill in where I have a gap in Copic colors…. Truly beautiful. I am a huge supporter of teachers, but they have a lot of responsibility with that job. Just 1 bad teacher will make it harder on every other teacher. The child feels not enough at that point. No different than a woman getting out of a mental or physically abusive relationship. A part of you believes what you heard. I love every kind of crafts, always have. Probably why I have 2 room full of craft stuff. I won't apologize for it though because my kids are all grown. Crafting is what I do. Plus the added gift of paperwork now that we are a non profit. To me a teacher who says someone's art is bad, they are limited by their own box if rules. I love art, but Picasso is not really my bag, however so many others love it. So if you have one person say that's not good, just remember another may think you are a brilliant artist. Just play, practice on paper. It's just paper.

I love the cards you made. I had tossed the idea of buying this set back and forth and that time decided to not purchase. I will now add this on my want this. Samples and videos really help see the possibilities. Thank you.

Awesome. I’m thinking that, although I love the die you used, I have something within the same ballpark that I can try and some glitter paper. I expected you to copic colour over the ink blending, which is a technique of yours that I love, but this is pretty too. I haven’t been in the craft room to actually craft for a few weeks now for various reasons. I’m currently recovering from a head injury after recovering from a vaccine and other things, so I needed your inspiration. Thanks!

Wanted to share two things- 1 - regarding gym class…. When it came to climbing a rope in elementary school, I couldn’t do it… I remember telling my gym teacher to ‘just give me an F’ for rope climbing lol…. 2- last year I gifted my mom a very large stack of various cards for her to use. She went through them and told me that I should find other things to do… I was like- why? I like to make cards…. She said ‘but they’re just cards’… I was so annoyed.

My bad elementary school experience was in music. I have never been able to do karaoke or sing/play instruments with my music loving husband. It’s even affected my ability to speak out or speak loudly. Making noise is just terrifying to me.

Kelly, I wanted to tell you that someone reached out to me claiming to be you and told me I won a prize. Now they want me to pay at least $80 in shipping. They also asked me to connect with you on Telegram. I just wanted you to know.
