I loved the painting of the Delphiniums, I've grown them but the snails think they're wonderful to eat!! When I started pastel painting my biggest problem was being too heavy handed, a lighter touch is so important. Thank you for all the hints & tips :)
@monetcafe Жыл бұрын
Good to know! I didn’t know that snails eat flowers! And you’re so right about needing a light touch with soft pastels. It took me years to develop that strategy.

Thank you for a beginners video. I gave up on teaching myself pastels it seemed to be too hard. I painted this one with a few cheap pastels and cheap paper. Great fun I am hooked. My picture is not too bad. Many thanks

Hello again… lol This is one I might try myself. Great job..! I know this is a beginners course, but there is one underpinning factor, in color management; I've always see you dabble with at times, and that is: Warm lights, cool reflection., Cool lights, warm reflections. This doesn't mean that the shadows can't be warm, or cool, but the reflected light will be the opposite. This will add dimension, and a breath of fresh air. ;) [Not] all artists agree on this theory, but as in music, chord harmony is based solely on what musical notes sound good together… if a note falls outside the scale, it is called an "accidental." your friend, Jerry :)
@monetcafe Жыл бұрын
Yes, I do agree with your assessment of reflections, being the opposite color a bit. also, in music I love it when a note is a little bit off… The dissonance makes the song so much more interesting.

hello Susan,,,another great flower, field painting,,,I believe the flowers are dauphinians I am a fan of the color blue..purple..and you use them so well,,I think I misspelled The flower name..

Thanks so much, sweetheart… And yes, I think you’re right about those flowers.
@bonnieodonnell2780 Жыл бұрын
Really enjoyed that. I haven’t jumped in and purchased any pastels yet. How do u display the painting? Under glass? Does it need to be sprayed?
@monetcafe Жыл бұрын
Yes, pastel paintings need to be permanently displayed under glass. I never spray my final painting with fixative, because it darkens the final painting… but I sometimes use it during the working process. I literally just uploaded a video giving my advice on this topic. Check out some of my latest videos, and you should find it. I temporarily store my pastel paintings in clearbags. This protects them for storing and shipping. Of course I have another video on that topic as well. Hope you enjoy exploring my channel.

Super video! Had to laugh when you said you’re using budget price Paul Rubens and then start with Terry Ludwig’s for background 😂. BUT isn’t his Intense Darks set 1 and especially 2 fantastic? Changed everything when I splashed out on Intense dark set 2! 👍

Glad you enjoyed! And yes... gotta have some of those Ludwig Darks! Makes such a difference.... even if just one or two.

Wow I didn't know Canson does these.

Thanks this is great! Can you tell me why you say "to paint with pastel"? I always think of it as drawing🤭. I'm so inspired by your video about organizing pastels on color🤗. And I got a cigar cutter (amazing hack!) today to cut my crayons.
@monetcafe Жыл бұрын
That’s a common question I get about why a painting with pastels is considered painting and not drawing. Basically, it’s because with drawing you’re using more linear strokes and with pastels, we lay down blocks of color often lay them on their sides. Also, pastel is literally pure pigment with very little binder. It’s actually the same ingredients that are used in oil and acrylic but pastel paints are actually more vibrant. Hope that helps !!

It’s good one it’s less than a small agreement that I like to use chalk markers and pencils, colored pencils and that’s it

I only know the german name for these flowers: Rittersporn, that means the spurs of a knight. Romantic blue flower with a romantic blue german name. I enjoy your videos so much, thank you!
@monetcafe Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for that either! Someone told me that in English they’re called delphiniums. They really are a romantic, blue purple!
@paulah317 Жыл бұрын
Susan, could you do a beginner lesson on how to determine what color of paper to pick for a pastel painting? When to pick a dark paper such as dark gray, dark rust, dark blue vs when to select a pale paper such as yellow, beige, blue, gray? I got 2 sample packs of paper from Dakota and some of the colors confuse me as to when to use them...,,.one is an emerald green.....ewww, not sure what type of painting to do on it. Thanks!

That’s a great idea for a tutorial! I’ll try to get to that. ☺️

I think Amazon figured out their prices were too 'low' for that 120-pastel half-stick Paris set. They have upped their price to $189.00+.
@monetcafe9 ай бұрын
I noticed that their price went up, and I was bummed about that. Maybe at some point I will come back down again.
@SueSmith-g8o9 ай бұрын
Hopefully they will. I compared their prices to Dick Blick Art Materials, and they were the same. I've heard that Amazon will juggle prices.@@monetcafe
