@nancymonroe73268 жыл бұрын
+DoryenxBeauty It's up to you. I just alternate each week between cowashing and shampoo washing. Cowashing is just a way to refresh your hair without making it squeaky clean with shampoo. I can't just do cowashing only; that causes build up on my hair and scalp. So alternating is the best of both worlds for me. You don't have to cowash at all, if you don't want. You should do what works for you.
@Kenken777337 жыл бұрын
It's ok to cowash: just make sure you wash your hair with shampoo once a month, every two weeks or every week; if you do that it's perfectly fine to cowash. You can cowash every other day or every 3 days depending on your hair needs, but cowashing your hair is great

I also use different leave-in conditioners once in a while I use a wide-tooth comb and also detangle with my fingers... I do not pull a brush through my hair... I stopped doing the afro puffs because that causes knots that will no matter what your hair will break off... hair banding is what I do 2 a ponytail, when my hair grows waist length that's when I plan to leave my hair out:-)BTW..I DID CUT MY HAIR UP TO MY NECK IN 2017...AWAY WITH RELAXERS in 2016!!!!😊

I agree with you that everyone's hair is different. My hair does best when washed frequently. I like using non sulfate shampoos, my faves are the SM JBCO and the Palmers Shea Formula. My hair also likes overnight prepooing. My hair does not like the LOC method. My hair does not like sectioning and shingling. I've had the worst setbacks trying to follow rules like wash once a week and pineappling. I can't have a week of tangles and dryness for my hair. The best rule is to know your own hair and what works best, because we are all different and we have different hair goals. :)
@r4eofsun8 жыл бұрын
I agree with that as well but it also depends on the products you use. I cowash once a week and do a acv rinse once a month. I have been doing this for two years and my hair is in a phenomenal stage right now. However I use all natural products with no petroleum or mineral oil. So I think that makes a BIG difference of why I can successfully cowash. If you use chemicals in your hair. You most likely have to use chemicals to wash your hair.

I agree with you. when I decided to go natural, I watched literally all the videos on youtube. The constants were shea moisture products, loc method, sulphate free shampoo etc. Before I even grew out a lot of hair, I bought the entire shea moisture line coupled with an array of combs, brushes, gels, oils, spray bottles and literally anything I had seen being used. I spent so much money! My hair does not like shea moisture products at all lol! It doesn't make my hair soft. It actually makes it more stringy. After trial and error, I found out that my hair literally needs only shea butter (raw) after adding water/ just after a wash with any basic shampoo and conditioner. All my many products have been sitting on the shelf ever since... So know your hair and what works best for you, is the message!

@@onyinoyi_o I agree! My hair does not favor Shea Moisture products either. :( I have bought SO many of their products over the years, but have not finished not ONE bottle or jar of their products in the 8 years of me being natural. THAT should tell you something lol. I think there is such a thing as TOO MUCH shea butter lol. I think washing more frequently actually is GOOD for the hair. Co-washing can be fine, as long as you use the right products, and as long as you also SHAMPOO your hair at least once a week....at the VERY least once every 2 weeks.

I do not believe it is necessary to use a shampoo with sulfate to cleanse hair if you do NOT use products containing silicone. Silicones in products like conditioner and other styling products (unless it is labeled silicone free) can build up on the hair if consistently used. Sulfate is necessary for the removal of silicone build up. However, if you use silicone free conditioner and other silicone free products, you do not need to use a sulfate shampoo, which can strip the hair more than necessary. Sulfate-free shampoos are cleansing. AND if you use silicone free products, you do NOT need sulfate to strip that product. a sulfate free shampoo should cleanse regular dirt and oils, and there are clarifying products for more intense cleansing (be sure to deep condition after these). Bottom line: with other cleansing sulfate free products available, sulfate is not necessary UNLESS you need to remove silicones. I do not think this is clear in this video.
@sopriyebeverly59478 жыл бұрын
+Hazel Gayle I actually tend to agree with you. I have LP hair and I decided to stay off silicones like a plague and miraculously, my hair came back to life. I used a sulfate shampoo to start afresh and then just carried on with a sulfate free shampoo and I find that to be sufficient. I still keep some sulfate shampoo handy bcos the brand i have has chelating ingredients as the water is hard. I chelate/clarify every 2 months and shampoo with sulfate free shampoo every other time I shampoo.
@aliciabrillante8 жыл бұрын
This is true. I do not use any products with silicone and my water washes and sulfate free shampoo gets all of the products I use out of my hair completely. Shampoos with sulfate dry my hair to the point that it takes weeks for it to recover.

Thank the lord someone else to talk about this "co-washing" all it's doing is just building up product on your hair over a space of time. Go wash your skin with lotion if you think it's logical. In all honesty I think cowashing should only be used in between washes just for LIGHT refreshments if your a very active person.
@Brains-vb9yl8 жыл бұрын
I agree, I've noticed that co washing just creates more build up. BUT I've realized that this happens with thick conditioners. light or watery conditioner such as v05 is light enough to wash your scalp without the build up. That's a better alternative for a hair refresher.

I’m so glad I washed this video a long time ago and implemented shampoos back into my routine. It just made sense to at least shampoo and wash your hair occasionally. Now all these influencers who have been using DevaCurl Cowash products for years have bald spots, hair falling out and loss of their overall hair health. Anyway I’m so sick and tired of all these hair trends smh. One day it’s no relaxer, texturizer this, rice water that, cowash this, etc. we need to go back to basics : wash (shampoo), condition, and moisturize. lol that’s my little rant
@blue-ck9ns11 ай бұрын
You don’t need to use shampoo or conditioner in Afro textured hair. The hair is dry because shampoo destroys the natural sebum production and dries it out. If you used conditioner only, it will eventually clog the cuticles. That’s why you should only use water. Historically, water has always been used to clean the hair and scalp. After rinsing, all you need is some type of water soluble gel to hold the water in the hair to prevent dryness and dehydration. The reason why it needs to be water soluble is because it needs to completely rinse out with water. No oils, no butters, no heavy products that can’t be washed out with water only. Nurture Water Locking Gel has all water soluble ingredients and works great.

Shampoos really strip my hair. Ever since co-washing with TRESemmé about three years ago, my hair has been thriving very well. I co-wash every morning whilst using my fingertips to give my scalp a good scrub. Since I've started, I've observed oh so little hair left in my comb whilst combing. After combing my hair with conditioner in it, I apply vaseline to my ends (whilst conditioner is still in my hair) and then I rinse to then apply a leave-in conditioner and curl cream (no gels). I only wash my hair with regular shampoo every two to three months, if that. I really think it depends on the products we are using and if our hair tends to cling to everything as opposed to my resistant hair. We have the same hair texture :) You are so so beautiful!! I'm subscribing.

It’s truly a breath of fresh air, to watch and listen to someone who really knows what she is talking about. Regarding the shampoo/co-washing topic, I fully resonate with your reasoning - it makes total sense to me. Keep up the good work, hopefully you can break the hype of co-washing and save a lot of us from hair damage in the long run :-) On another topic - Do you have any thoughts about caring for natural hair that has been color treated with permanent hair dye. My hair texture and length is similar to yours, and I also have the low porosity areas at the back of my crown. I also wear wash n go's for 90% of the time. I dye my greys (every month or so), which makes my hair even drier than it already is. Any tips most welcome ... Btw, love your periscopes, and the fact that you know you get side tracked, it’s quite funny to see some of the followers 'bring you back on point' LOL :-) I applaud the work you are doing very much. Best wishes, Marlene (from the Netherlands)

Hi Abena! I think some people get confused when products are labeled "sulfate free" but when you read the ingredients list, they clearly have a type of surfactant as the first ingredient hence the reason it lathers, although not as harsh as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and their Ammonia cousins. I personally avoid theses harsh ingredients in ALL my personal care products because of their corrosive nature and a possible carcinogenic nature. So, I think a list of good cleansing surfactants should be addressed and which ones work best for clarifying for those who want to avoid the harsh ones for health reasons! Thank you!

Thanks for posting this video. I have been natural for 10 years, I stopped straightening about 6 months ago after suffering hair loss from medications and a horrible scalp psoriasis breakout. It wasn't a lot, I cut about 6 inches of hair and really started to enjoy just washing and being able to go. I have dryness and was considering co-washing or shampooing without clarifying. Using sulfate free shampoo made my scalp bleed from the psoriasis. The dermatologist suggested I use a clarifying shampoo at least every 4-5 days. I was thinking he has no clue what he is was taking about, he doesn't know how black hair works. So, your video was confirmation, I need to follow his advice and make sure I add the moisture back into my hair. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I rinse and massage my scalp very well every morning with just warm water and my scalp massager (the vanity planet groove), and once my scalp feels clean and oil-free I proceed to condition ONLY MY STRANDS, and avoid getting it on my scalp at all costs. Every wash day (Sunday) I clarify with bentonite clay or just use my favorite sulfate free shampoo depending on how I coated my hair throughout the week. I’m a 4b/4c combination twa (about 9 months post big chop) and this has really began to help me retain so much moisture and softness. Since I clean my scalp every morning I am free to apply hair growth oils and fertilizers every night, it’s working like a charm

Ok... I needed this video. I'm 67 and I've been natural for 25+ years (some exceptions like flat ironing).1. Weekly I pre-poo with EVOO, then use modified Hydration Method (clay mixed with Apple Cider Vinegar, aloe vera juice, honey). Followed by leave in conditioner. I then follow with Flaxseed Gel for either a Wash and Go, or a protective style(usually two strand twist pinned up or a bun that's then two strand twist & pinned down), which I leave in for the week. My hair doesn't like to be manipulated too often, so I don't seem to be able to maintain wash and go for more than a day or two.Some times if I've sweated a lot I will co-wash the hair mid week and then put it back in protective style (depending on protective style I might put a wig style cap over it and co-wash & condition through the cap).2. I Shampoo ever other week with Shampoo for Grey Hair following Modified Hydration Method, before leave in conditioner step.3. I'm using Sulpher/Emu Oil/Black Castor Oil daily for thin/bald spots around the edges, and a growth oil on remaining scalp every other day and on my protective style (take it down gently spritzing & oiling the ends, then pin it back up).4. I spritz my hair all over daily with water. Is there anything I need to change to above routine for over all maintenance of my hair. Especially using the clay mixture. Will this suffice for removing product build up vs shampoos and keeping my hair & scalp health?Is there anything else I need to do to regrow hair in thin and bald spots.

1st let me say that I am so glad that your channel was suggested on my feed. I just wanted to say thank you for this informative video. What you said about not cleansing your scalp made so much sense. I have only been natural for 4 yrs but my 16y/o daughter has been natural all of her life and she has always had long healthy hair taken care of by me or our stylist. When I began doing my journey I began to use tips that I read about on her hair and I've noticed that she's been that her hair seems stuck and stopped growing. But now you have made me realize that the regime I had been using on her hair all of her worked. This included washing her hair biweekly with shampoo, deep condish, moisturizing daily and greasing her scalp. Her scalp was stimulated because I styled it in several ponytails daily but never pulling to tight. Her hair had always grown up until we began cowashing and a few other things. So now it's back to what I did all those years which was basic hair care.

I wash my hair with shampoo every Sunday and when I feel like my hair feels heavy or that I've overloaded on products I like to do a co-wash in the middle of the week just to get me to my wash day. I love doing it that way but A good Shampoo cleanses everything, it needs to be in your weekly routine or every week routine for those who are skeptical.

Thank you sooooooo much for saying these things. When I was permed, I co-washed for 20 years...no shampoo ever because it made my scalp itchy and dry. Note, I never used hair oils, etc. As a Natural I MUST use a sulfate shampoo WEEKLY because I use so much CRAP in my hair to make it soft. As a natural I figured out the need for a weekly SULFATE shampoo within 6 months. The build up would be incredible without it.

This is the typical licensed cosmetologist's view. But I do agree that there should be periodic clarifying with shampoo to remove build up and ensure cleanliness. But shampoo is not for everyone. It does a number on my hair, and I've tried many. I have a few that I like, but all require a few weeks of recovery for my hair.

Amen and thanks so much for this video. I never believed in the whole sulfate issue. I'm 60 years young and i have been natural for seven years. When I had a perm for all of the previous years I never had a problem with my hair. Of course it helped that i had the same hair dresser for 25 wonderful years. When i moved to Arizona I decided to go natural. This was such an uplifting video. I wish i could reach thru my monitor and hug you. Stay blessed.I'm so glad i accidentally found your channel. I will definitely keep watching. Your expertise was very informative.

I'm so glad I found your channel, I have a similar texture hair to yours but my hair is very fine and I have less density, my curls also used to looked similar to yours before i got a scalp condition that created fungus in my crown, because i used to co wash, do the GHE technique, stopped using shampoo and wore buns with wet hair which was one of the main culprits!! This was such a traumatic and stressful time, over time my whole crown area thinned and fell out to about an inch and was very thin and dry, while the rest of my hair was healthy and and near BSL. I could no longer have my hair down because my crown was short, fried, dry and crusty because of the fungus. I used medicated shampoo, It took me over a year to get it back into a growing pattern because it would always just fall out because of the condition on my scalp the follicles weren't strong enough to grow past an inch. After 3 years it has improved, but moisturising this section is impossible and its still a little thin an very frizzy, its still not 100% i'm worried it will never go back to how it was, i would love to wear my curly hair again. I have low porosity hair all over but especially in crown area and the top section is extremely frizzy and holds no curl anymore, I will try heating my conditioner and see if that works. Could you recommend products or techniques i could use to get my scalp and top section less frizzy and dry? I'm so close to shaving my head and starting again. I feel like nothing works, i would love to get my curls back!

My hair gets thin, breaks off, and gets super tangled using sulfates. To the point where i would wait a month or even more to wash because my hair suffers a lot from shampooing. Ive used all types of soaps, and it all had the same results until i used non sulfate shampoo, i didnt know about sulfates and stuff like that, and I really liked it because it was so gentle on my hair. I was actually looking at the label to see what brand it was, i never been interested in buying a specific shampoo before. So I started watching natural hair videos a lot, and kept hearing people say dont use soaps with sulfates, or they say the type f shampoo they use has no sulfates. I dont believe you should buy things just because a natural says buy it or dont use it because they only have experience with their own hair, but i was thinking if I should continue using that soap, and get a sulfate free shampoo. And the next time i went to go wash my hair i read on the bottle “sulfate free” and that answered my question right there if its not broke dont fix it

I would first like to say that I appreciate your overall approach to this video. This is a touchy subject for a lot of natural's as you know, and I appreciate your educating the community in a respectful and gentle approach. Facts are facts, but the delivery helps it stick imo. I am still learning how to properly care for MY natural hair and have been considering the cowashing method. As of now I still plan to proceed with trying cowashing alternating every week with a clarifying shampoo/conditioner regimen. My hair must be clean clean clean :) Thank you!

Great video thanks for sharing even though I’m about two years late but the information shared in this video is still relevant to today. As for Cowashing I follow the Dickey Method and I have to honestly say that my hair is flourishing. also I’ve learned that I have been detangling my 4A/4B type hair wrong which have led to hair loss and hair damage. After I close my hair with a sulfate shampoo and mask out massager I detangle my hair under a steady stream of water with lots of conditioner and I’ve done this for a matter of six months and I shed very little hair. Before I would detangle outside the shower and will be confused as to why I’d have all this hair coming out of my head. I’m keeping my hair moist with a spray bottle and leave in with slip and I’m detangling from the ends up to the root and I was still losing a lot of hair so I really believe that getting to know your hair is very important and it’s something that every Black woman should learn. I mean it took me being seven years natural to learn that detangling my hair under steady stream of water help minimize breakage. Since my discovery I only do this in the shower I do not detangle my hair when it’s dry. Another thing I have learned while following the Dickey method I’ve learned not to be afraid of conditioners that contain cones and I’ve learned not to fear sulfate shampoos. I think we should remember that natural hair care should be kept simple I think the natural hair care boom has taken us off the path and we are trying to make sure we’re not using cones or sulfates and using onion water and rice water in our hair making natural hair care difficult to the point where most women are using wigs and weaves because haircare has become too time consuming or even worse going back to relaxers!!

+aliciabrillante: I use a cleanser for the skin on my scalp. To me it's the same as the rest of my skin. It sweats, and gets dirty too. I just use a mild shampoo. my hair is midback length. No issues with growth or breakage from shampooing.

+aliciabrillante: The last few times I have used Shea Moisture, but I purchased a case of the Cream of Nature (old formula). I generally use that watered down with some demineralized water and I apply to my scalp only with a dye bottle nozzle, and let the bubbles run down the hair. Does a great job and my hair is never overly dry.

Thank you so much.

I cowash either every day or every other day and usually once a week or week and a half i shampoo. I also like to completely detangle my hair in the shower and retwist in 4 sections. Not cowashing daily has dried my hair out and i noticed a lot more breakage and single strand knots. Its ok to incorporate both cowashing and shampoo.

My hair was falling out in big clumps and I couldn't understand until I used process of elimination and realized it was the shampoo!! I went back to my sulfate shampoo and sure enough, my hair stopped shedding in clumps, my hair stopped itching, and my curl definition came back. It was a hard lesson that made me realize I need to do more research before I jump head first into a new fad like this one. Thank you for discussing this issue.

Co washing only does not work especially if u have low porosity hair. You're right! your hair styles last longer after shampooing. Even though my hair may feel stripped after shampooing, for me the test is how my hair feels the next few days and i love my hair the next day after a shampooing regime. As long as you condition or deep condition afterwards, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

As much as I would like to take this seriously, people are already out here talking about water "washing". That's taking it to another level. Also, what are you're thoughts on using apple cider vinegar as a cleanser?
@Mario_Real_Talk6 жыл бұрын
She is right. You are supposed to keep your scalp clean, but you can co-wash between shampoo washing your hair with sulfate or no sulfates shampoo or apple cider vinegar. That stuff is not bad. Just don’t only use co-wash, yea it will be bad.

Thanks for your informative videos on the subject of cowashing. As you know, I make the distinction between using a conditioner to wash vs. a cleansing conditioner. The cleansing conditioners I use have cleansing agents to clean the scalp and hair. I shampoo once a week either with a sulfate shampoo or a sulfate free shampoo (which also have milder surfactants) and midweek, I use a cleansing conditioner. I don't ever get build-up on my curls and I think this regimen works for me. As you so wisely said, there are anomalies and all of bus in the natural hair community need to be well informed about everything related with our beautiful curls. I am so glad I discovered your KZbin channel. Thanks for caring and the great work you are doing! May God richly blessed you!

Embrace Natural Beauty Thank you so much for this vlog! I'm a cosmetologist and a holistic health practitioner and one of the major concerns that I have beyond hair loss is the fact that co-washing WILL compromise the immune system. A suppressed immune system will leave people open to any and every disease and disorder known to man. You may feel run down all the time, dragging constantly battling a cold, forgetful, moody, angry crave sugar etc. You may have now have allergies when you didn't have them before. Dermatitis, and not just on your scalp, face, neck and back...even the soles of your feet may itch. It can can cause an over growth of yeast aka candida and that's to name but a few of the health issues that a suppressed immune system can impact. Yeah! Ladies, it's that serious! So thank you for this vlog the information IS needed.

@JWildberry6 жыл бұрын
That is a lie. Not using a shampoo is not going to compromise your immune system. The only thing that has any truth to it here is that a conditioner can increase allergies or skin conditions if you use the wrong one, but that's the same for absolutely all hair/skin products. I'm not sure if you're blaming the conditioner or saying you don't get clean enough without shampoo, though. If you're trying to claim that people don't get the scalp clean enough and are therefore vulnerable, then you should really read up a bit.

I condition my hair twice after a sulfate shampoo (never let the conditioner touch my scalp). Then I use the LOC method. It helps hugely! Or, I deep condition. Shedding extremely with CO-washing is a "thing". It exists. I had that happen to me too. Even a sulfate-free shampoo did nothing for me. I use the sulfates because I have seborrheic dermatitis and it helps keep it at bay.
