Love Dave Allen - grew up watching his shows and his comedy is brilliant. He talked about everyday things and made them so funny, for example being a passenger on an airplane, shopping, teenagers, and of course this one, teaching your kid time, classic comedy. His sketches were brilliant too - as a family, we never missed his shows on the TV, so entertaining, so good and he was just a superb storyteller!

Me and my husband used to look forward to the Dave Allen show (1970's I think) every week and for me this sketch is the best of them all. Some people were very much against him because of his sketches on the Catholic church and the Pope. My husband is catholic and i'm protestant but the sketches are so funny you just forget all that, the other sketch which I think is great is the one where there are two funerals and both are trying to get to the church first, if you haven't seen it I suggest you take a look. Dave Allen was a one off and thats why he is still remembered and loved today.

Dave Allen ‘on religion’ is one of his great sketches: a master of the absurd. He was the travelling compère for a Uk music tour in 1963 that featured Helen Shapiro and The Beatles- my friend has the original tour poster from Harrogate in Yorkshire. I think he also appeared with The Beatles on ABC tv in the US around that time.

I was a kid myself the first time I saw Dave Allen and this bit of comedy genius so while I found it funny it didn't hit home until many years later and I had my son and then it all turned out to be true! I always said Dave Allen was the funniest man I'd ever seen until Billy Connelly came along, but Dave is still very sorely missed. The thing is, the greatest comedy is timeless. I think this perfectly encapsulates just how frustrating and hard it can be sometimes to explain concepts - that as an adult you find simple - to children. The frequent cuts to separate questions or observations from the child, his train of thought being derailed by observations he wasn’t expecting etc

Mum bought me a Ladybird book on How To .. Tell The Time. I already could. At school we used to be given a whole load of standard clock face questions to do maths with, working out elapsed time and so on, plus inverted/ reflected and inverted reflected clocks to work out real time and the calculations too. Quite interesting. We were never taught it but I also learned to read with the paper upside down (useful in the heads office for gleaning information off the desk when getting a summons there.
