As a Brit living in the USA I am always surprised that people here do not know how to tell time in 24 hour format (military time) Something that stuck with me from my school days in the UK.
@Karl-oo9mq2 ай бұрын
I had always assumed that in the time of sitting in front of computers, and now tablets and mobiles, that the time was set to 24hr. And then finding out most Americans don't. I look to see what the time is and I'm looking at a number starting 17, as a Brit.

I remember one time I was standing in the queue at the supermarket here in London, UK and an elderly woman behind me tapped me on the back and asked me for the time and as I was about to get my phone out, I noticed there was a clock on the wall saying 17 : 55 or whatever. Then just as I noticed, the person in front of me had finished and it was my turn to start loading my items from my basket on to the conveyor belt, so I told the elderly woman about the clock for her to look at for herself and then began taking my items from my basket. A few seconds later, she tapped me on the back again and asked me if I could tell her because she said that she could not tell the time in 'digital'.

A few years ago, somewhere here in England, an exam (test) was taking place. Part way through, the clock up on the wall had to be replaced with a digital one because the sixteen year olds couldn't tell the time on the original one as it was analogue.😔

10 & 2 for hand positions is out of date: it's now 9 & 3. If you use the 10 & 2, then if the air bag goes off your hands are flung into your face! Dave Allen used to drink in a pub near to where I used to live. His 'whiskey' on stage was flat ginger ale.

Thanks for the reaction. Dave Allen is as always hilarious. Of course the way to tell the time is for comical reasons messed up. However, they way how we measure time is totally puzzling. Fractions of seconds are base 10. Seconds and minutes are base 60. Days are based 24 (our in the US base 12 + am and pm). Actually there is no easy we to do it. You have to learn a lot to tell the time. It could have bean easy if we would have stick to decimal time as introduced by the French during the french revolution.

One intensely traumatized child. I never had a problem picking up the concept of time and reading a clock like this. Miss Roslyn on Romper Room must have had the knack. Then there was Play School. I was sat in front of that and I absorbed it all. I just love watches and clocks. The only problem is that I have sensory sensitivity to the ticking sound and sudden sounds like the chiming of the hour. The problem was compounded one night when the grandmother clock just outside my bedroom door dropped both it's weights in the middle of the night. I was thankful that we couldn't afford to get it repaired so it stayed silent vigil to the days stuck around midnight.

I totally failed at teaching my nephew how to read a clock, so I can understand Dave Allen's frustration. He may still not know as an adult, when I think about it - and likely doesn't need to in today's world. I also failed to teach him to tie his shoelaces, arduously attempting to teach him 'loop, swoop and through' for months. One weekend he comes back from his father's and ties his shoes, using the bloody 'bunny ears' method. 👿

Most Americans don't use military time, as we do in the UK, and in Europe ? it's so simple, 00-12am, till noon is morning, then from 12 noon, back on up to the 12, from then on it is in the pm, it becomes afternoon, evening, or night, its AM or PM, that's the whole 24 hours, it's not that difficult, ,then there are the numbers in between, the minute hand, so the minutes from the 12 to the 6, are passed the hour, ie its 10 passed, or it's 25 passed the hour, some people may say after the hour ? then from the 6 back up to the 12 it's to the hour. Simples ! That was the way I was taught time in my childhood, by my father, it took some time to understanding it but I got there in the end, and then I got my first wrist watch, a TIMEX, this skit was a good laugh, and brought back memories of telling time. Most people these days don't have watches it's all digital now, they have it on their cell or mobile phones (us Brits have our settings set in military time , it's just the norm for us 😊😊) Dave Allen was a brilliant comedian, try out his Adam & eve or airplane skit, you won't be disappointed 🤣🤣🤣

I teach maths to adults in community, and time is a thorny one. This doesn't even cover all the tricky bits - why does it change from AM to PM when the hour number goes from 11 to 12, not when it restarts? I mean, if you already know, it makes sense; but when you're first trying to get your head round it, it just seems silly. Then you've got extra differences based on where they come from: for example, for Germans, half past six is halb sieben ("half seven"). Fun, fun, fun.

Dave was a fantastic comedian, there are a few on youtube that are really funny, one was his shows on religion, that will make you think lol there are 2 or 4 on that subject, try and get the full version, some only cover the adam and eve thing, but there is one that gives most of that show. also another about flying thats funny also. I grew up watching dave and looked forward to his show every week, not only is he a great comedian he also gave you something to think about.
