You definitely serve octopus in the USA, a lot of European based cuisines use it (Italian, Greek, Spanish, French) so you'll often find it on menus.

They tried to say something about how you eat squid or calamari but not octopus. And although it is true that squid is not the same as octopus, both are eaten. Octopus tends to be very rich in flavour, while squid meat tends to be tougher and smoother raw, but gets tender and firm when cooked, which allows it to suck up more added flavour/spices. But yes.. BOTH are eaten.

Episodes like this are how you know that Karl is a real person. Some people think that he's a character that Ricky and Steve have written, or perhaps a comedian in his own right who puts on the Karl "persona" for comedy. But I honestly believe that there is not a script writer or comedian anywhere in the world who could come up with the things which Karl says. You literally "couldn't make it up". Only Karl's brain is capable of generating these thoughts.

About Susanne not appearing in Karl's diary, what you hear on the show are curated parts especially chosen to be read for their entertainment value. Also, I think Susanne likes her privacy (even if she is a public person in her own right, she's not a celebrity). The animated version of her never shows her face, while Ricky's partner does.
