Putting a Jet Engine in a Mini Van is the best bad idea ever (Fire Dept Called)

LOL I'm glad you're enjoying my van! I take it out and scare the crap out of myself whenever I can! First Flight was 17 years ago and I never get tired of it. I built everything myself, including the transfer case and rear axle. It only makes about 100 pounds of thrust, most of the energy is absorbed by the power turbine. If you removed the power turbine and replaced it with a properly sized nozzle, it would only make about 400 pounds of thrust. It's not that big of a jet engine, and the power turbine is the key to it's performance. And another interesting point is the afterburner actually slows it down as the temperature drop across the power turbine is less. The afterburner is just for show and it's very important. The LED's add up to 600 watts so far. I love seeing it put a smile on everyone's face.

Turboshaft engine exhaust "thrust" is a by-product of driving the shaft. The hot section has more rows of blades to capture the power to turn the propeller or rotor. Therefore there's less exhaust power wasted out the back end. Turbojet engines are designed to produce maximum exhaust thrust. With the minimum power being captured by the turbine in order to drive the compressor stage, the power is fired out the exhaust.

The turbines with the output shafts are usually old helicopter engines. These are purchased after the engine is houred out for aviation use. Common use is Off Shore power boats and Marathon River racing Jetboats. So no thrust numbers.

In general, it would be expected that total output shaft power of a turboprop engine will be about 1/3 of total shaft power. Almost all of the other 2/3 shaft power is consumed in turning compressor blades. Exhaust thrust is expected to be only 2% to 3%. They are definitely not designed to produce thrust.

Yeah, that's what I thought. We don't measure HP or KW produced by the exhaust of an internal combustion engine either, but it's clearly enough to spin a turbocharger, so has some power there! It's merely the byproduct of the engine itself.
