Thank you for explaining this as I’ve had so many plants I’ve purchased online completely melt once in my aquarium and it is so disheartening to see. Makes total sense if everyone selling had as high humidity as possible growing them so we, the customer, doesn’t end up with a tank full of melted new purchases! Great information!

You'll get co2 in those tubs just from the plants recycling carbon out of the soil, like you were assuming. They break it off into elemental levels and respire co2 when processing sugars at night. Then in the day theyll "breathe it back in. So leaving the lid closed as much as possible is a good plan. Side note and oddity... after one inhale, the average human breath contains the humidity and co2 content that most aquatic/riparian plants want in the day time ... christel Kasselmann mentioned that at an ADA Talk when speaking on bagging and shipping plants...that they do better if you just exhale to fill their bags. :)
@AquariumPlantLab2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Just like how a dirted tank gains CO2 at night. I love how simple soil is for both emersed and submersed growth 😊. Interesting point from Christel Kasselmann! Makes sense! I love her work, I started following her over on Instagram awhile back 🌱

Does we need to make some hole at our container to give some air???
@bobsaquariumscreaturesandp54612 жыл бұрын
That’s a clever idea with the totes. How often do you have to burp them? It would be interesting to set up some co2 meters to see which plants consume how much co2
@AquariumPlantLab2 жыл бұрын
I am usually in each tub once a day. Sometimes I go a few days without burping them though and the plants just keep on growing like mad 😊 . Definitely Ive always wanted to gather data like that on CO2. Super curious! 🌱

What temperature do you keep your heater in your aquarium
@TankGirl3523 ай бұрын
Hi, I want to start growing plants. I live in FL and I don't have room inside and was wanting to grow outside. Would having the lid burn the plants? We are at 90+ probably until Sept . I mean it's really humid so maybe no lid?
@Idkseemskindafishy Жыл бұрын
Is temperature important in growing aquarium plants emersed? If so, what is the best way to apply heat to the containers and what is a good temperature?
@AquariumPlantLab Жыл бұрын
Typically 70-80F is a good goal. Generally when growing indoors your light will produce enough heat to achieve those temperatures within your grow container. 👍

This is so smart 👍🏻. Does Anubias in hydroton need ventilation to get sufficient CO2? Since there is no soil to get it from or will opening the lid once a day for foliar feeds provide sufficient new CO2?

Do you ship stem plants with root system? Or just the cuttings? If you do just cuttings, why do you not include the roots?
@AquariumPlantLab Жыл бұрын
I mostly sell easier category plants that root readily in aquariums. It is easier to keep cuttings in stock since I am not sellling the whole plant but rather pieces of a plant. They are generally faster to harvest, clean, and ship which helps keep their price down too. I do sell some stem plants as rooted cuttings, but typically focus on harder to grow stems or stems that Ive figured out how to propagate, root, harvest, and clean quickly with roots. One example of a rooted plant I sell is Lobelia Cardinalis, another though not really a stem plant is Water Sprite. 🌱

Do you have springtails in any of these bins? I saw the other comment about heavy planting to combat mold, and I saw one of your other videos where you were using springtails in a different type of setup, was just curious if you use springtails in your high humidity bins for bioactivity - and why/why not.
@kermitdd2 жыл бұрын
Would your type of system work for guppy grass? Yes, I know it is most often used as a floating plant. However, if can be planted in the substrate like a stem plant. ALSO, how would you go about growing floaters? I am guessing just shallow tubs, but I would prefer your actual answer.
@AquariumPlantLab2 жыл бұрын
I would agree, Gyppy Grass would be better suited to a submerged system. For floaters I have found that a shallow water setup works best, contrary to popular believe I find that most floaters actually appreciate a small amount of surface agitation through the use of airstones. Just enough to keep biofilm down seems to do the trick 👍

Will emersed plants grow faster than submersed? Is that why most farms grow plants that way?
@AquariumPlantLab8 ай бұрын
Generally yes, and generally healthier, bigger, less algae, and more resilient to shipping stress. 🌱 There are some exceptions. Already slow growing plants don’t necessarily grow faster and some plants can’t even grow out of water at all (like Vallisneria).

I've been trying to grow aquarium plants in a greenhouse, sadly, their emersed state causes them to dry out, even when using a tub-system like you are, so I guess the humidity isn't high enough... I'm still experimenting though, so maybe I have to up the humidity in the entire greenhouse for this to work... Still have to work out how though... ;)
@AquariumPlantLab2 жыл бұрын
Likely low humidity is the issue or too much sunlight which is directly related to humidity also. If you are in a hot climate a shade cloth may be necessary during the warmer months.
@sshomelab2 жыл бұрын
I've been playing around with emersed growing, but in the hydroballs I'm having some issues. Anubias gracilis started to get fungus on the leaves and the rhyzome started to rot. I cut away the rotting parts and hope they will bounce back. I suspect that my fertilizer is too concentrated or something (I'm using the reccomended concentration for houseplants) My Hygrophila pinnatifida also didn't make it, although the whole batch didn't make it, submersed or emersed. The only plant that is thriving right now is my Dracaena sanderiana (lucky bamboo). The plants that are in soil are doing just fine, except for my 'snow white' Anubias, but those plants are hard to get going anyways in my experience.
@AquariumPlantLab2 жыл бұрын
I think you meant emersed, but correct me if I am wrong there. Hydroponic growing is definitely a bit more finicky than soil growing. First thing I would recommend checking is your PH. Also make sure you have the hydroponic setup covered to retain that humidity. Could also be your nutrient solution as you suggested. 👍
@sshomelab2 жыл бұрын
@@AquariumPlantLab It was emersed (fixed it). When the lids were closed the leaves were covered with fungus 'fillaments'. I did spray the leaves with the fertilizer solution, so I'm pretty sure the problem is the concentration. I'll check the pH, and see if there is an issue there or not. Tnx for the reply.
@AquariumPlantLab2 жыл бұрын
@@sshomelab I would try skipping the foliar spray. Might even spray down the plants with some regular water to remove nutrients from the leaves. I’ve found rhizome plants to appreciate a foliar spray but stem plants to not need it so much. Good luck!
@tomorrow3582 Жыл бұрын
I don't think the soil is adding a significant amount of co2. If that were the case then plants in Walstad tanks would grow as fast as your plants but we know they don't because they're limited by co2 when compared to co2 injected tanks. I think it's more likely that opening the tub once or twice a day to spray refreshes the tubs with a lot of co2.
@JyajAquaticPlants Жыл бұрын
adding a air pump tube into the tub would this help add co2?
