+BudgetBugout Yeah I hear that! I don't have the budget to EDC an Emerson but I have the CQC-4K, it gets the job done and I carry it every day. I know Nutn's not really into the Emerson colabs because of the weight of the non skeletonized (s or z?) steel frame lock but they got a lot of bang for the buck. I've had to replace one once after losing it, no biggie, I just couldn't imagine losing a full fledged Emerson.

Carrying my CQC 7BW in Afghanistan right now, wish I could post a pic because it's seen some use (been carrying it since 2013). I'm gone for a few days and come back to the TNP knife show! Having a couple of Ernie's knives I will tell you that my preferred daily carry knife is the Emerson Commander. I LOVE this knife, the shape, the durability, it is my near perfect EDC knife. That belly... yeah... dig it. I also carry one of Ernie's Karambit folders and it is a tank.I would never have to worry about it closing under use and it has but one use. I have started carrying a Spyderco Pacific Salt in Black on Black/ plain edge to work. I work with produce and wanted to try the H1 steel. I love it and it hasn't rusted plus, the blade shape is great for working in my trade, except... I can't bring myself to hard use it when the cardboard baler is too full, or i need to ice pick chop some ice from the freezer next door, that is where the Emerson Commander excels, repeat excels... over any other knife I've carried. Super CQC8 is on this year's list. So, when you motorcycle out to the Real-Far-Nor-Cal, gear check me... I'll make history for ya.

Remember, Nut'n has stated before and he constantly states that these are just his preferences and his opinions. There's nothing wrong with that. Sometimes Nut'n says things or does things, and people find it entertaining. It's your money. Buy what you like, carry whatever you like. He's not telling you that you have to do the things he likes or the things he does. If you don't "get" why he or anyone else likes Emerson knives, it's all good. He does this to put out entertaining content based on what he likes and what he's interested in and there are lots of people who like what he's doing. Now, do all of you Nut'n haters "get" that?
@scammajamma9 жыл бұрын
would you consider doing a review on the newer Emerson Sheepdog knife that Ernie designed for LTC Grossman? I am really considering buying one, but don't have any experience with that model. I'm interested in that specific model because of the ball bearing pivot, which I believe would address some of your criticisms. Perhaps if it became a best seller, Emerson would be persuaded to update some of his other designs.

Great to see some KRV's, Nutn! I have a ton of carrying and use time with 154CM, S30V and S35VN. Both S30V and S35VN have held their edges quite a bit longer than the 154CM. That said, I really can't tell any difference between the performance of S30V and S35VN. In case someone is curious, most of the 154CM experience that I have comes from Benchmade and Emerson. While I've carried a number of S30V knives from different makers, most of my experience is with Spyderco's product.With S35VN, all of it has been with Spyderco and ZT.

The stiffness of the knives out of box has to do with several factors (detents and washers). The washers in most of Emerson's knives are corrosion-proof Nylatron. There is a reason why he chose this material. If you know the history of his custom knives, you'll know why he chose this material over phosphor bronze, etc. Has something to do with the saltwater. ;) The newer model you have is the CQC-7 flipper. S35VN, and it rides on bearings--a result of the Emerson/ZT collaboration. Currently, Emerson Knives Inc. has a sale going on for Christmas knives. They have different color handles in limited runs (10-20 knives).
@CuttingEdgeWorks9 жыл бұрын
I've only handled/used about 5 Emerson knives, but have not figured out why anyone would want one present day. 10 years ago, maybe. Tolerances, materials, fit & finish are some of the worst in the industry. I couldn't agree with you more that the designs and materials need to be stepped-up. Another good review and thanks for your time.

I use my Emerson Horseman everyday on the ranch. The weight is actually very handy when I use it as a hammer or prybar. Yes I use it as a hammer of occasion. I obviously wouldn't do that with my paramilitary or manix 2, but then again, I wouldn't classify those as "hard use tactical".

bought a cqc7 way back when it first came out 10 years or so ago. tried to carry it ,but found other knives of better quality to carry. hated the chisel grind. sold it to a young man who thought it was the coolest thing ever. soon after I missed having the knife and bought other knives that had Tanto blades like Benchmade and sog. last year I saw that Emerson was making the cqc7 in a vee grind and I bought one in desert tan. really cool. bottom line is that I have carried it about 5 to 10 times in the year or more that I owned it. so it just doesn't compete with the modern production knives out there. there are so many better options out there. oh well. at least I can say I have an Emerson in my collection. maybe I will dig it out and carry it this weekend

I bought my first Emerson back in 2011 and haven't looked back. I love Emerson knives they make a simple no bullshit knife no need to have special tools or torx bits. I own a few now and carry at least one everyday sometimes two. The combat karambit makes a great weapon retention tool when carried on the opposite side of your handgun. Customer service is on point sent in a CQC8 that I jacked up and had it back in TEN days! That is crazy fast compared to any other knife company hell any company for that matter for warranty work. As for the weight I will take a few extra ounces for what the knife gives me in return. Great and honest review for awesome blades keep up the good work.

I like Emerson, because they are in touch with their audience. Granted, it's a specific customer base, but at least they know what they do and they do it well. What are your thoughts when compared to the Kershaw Emerson collaboration versions? Sure, all the negatives of the stock Emerson blades, but much cheaper.
@AkaiShizuku9 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you reviewed these. I've never been a fan of Emerson's knives. While the Wave feature is really cool, I feel that's all Emerson has going for it. They cost a lot for what they are, considering fit and finish and materials involved. I consider their designs to be poor; for instance, as you mentioned, the chisel grind is so that a soldier can easily sharpen the blade in the field...and then Emerson goes and makes the blade out of S35VN rather than a much easier-to-sharpen steel. Don't even get me started on the lock. IMO, a liner lock straight-up does not belong on a tactical folder. Furthermore, I detest tantos with swedges, as a swedge defeats the entire point of the design (point strength). Fit and finish is sub-par compared to other brands at similar (and lesser!) price points, too. Now, let's compare this to what I consider the quintessential tactical folder, the Cold Steel Recon 1. The Recon 1 is lighter, features a much, much stronger lock, offers better fit and finish, has got higher-end steel (I'm going to take CTS-XHP over 154CM any day), is hollow ground (as opposed to chisel ground), and costs a lot less! Of course, this is only if we're talking 1st kind of cool, but that's what I base most of my purchases on and that's my opinion.
@triggertalk77559 жыл бұрын
I think if you really might need to access and deploy a knife in a tactical fashion, and speed is key, having the butt of the knife sticking up is advantageous. for someone needing an edc/tool, deep pocket carry is better. hence, I feel the clip placement is well suited for this particular knife. ..
@9SS94Cr9 жыл бұрын
it's really a love or hate relationship for Emerson knives. I own a few and carry a cqc7 as my edc for 5 years. For me the cqc7 is the perfect balance between strength and SAWC. The chisel grind does create some trouble during use, so I'm thinking about getting a cqc7a, with a drop point and v grind. I simply love cqc7 and a lot other Emerson's handle design. I have been practicing knife martial arts for years and Emerson's handles have the best balance between retention and maneuverability.

question? You want better steel than Crucible 154 cm? Opinion: Single bevel knives rock. Totally. Problem with the cq7 is the bevel is on the wrong side.

I love Emersons for their legacy, but as you discuss, the industry has advanced far past the originals, not just in general, but specifically with ZT Emersons with better build quality and materials and with the Kershaw Emersons if you are looking for bottom-dollar value. For me there is nothing like the original, but it is purely 2nd kind of cool. Not that 2nd kind of cool should be underestimated in this case, since these are truly legendary.
@Mister_Phafanapolis9 жыл бұрын
For me, it's the value equation of "real" Emersons. They're expensive for their materials (Cold Steel Lawman, for example, is half or a third the price) or comparably not cutting edge for their premium price (a $200 Zero Tolerance checks every whiz-bang modern folding knife box.) They feel like a relic of the past, anachronistic knives from a time before I was "in to" knives and gear. They don't make sense to me.
