Emilia is Officially Better Than Rem | Re Zero Season 2 Episode 22

Emilia since the very beginning of Re Zero has needed help from others. She could never accomplish things with her own power. However after Re Zero Starting Life in Another World Season 2 Episode 22 Emilia has found the strength to do things on her own. She has progressed to a point where she doesn't need to hide behind others like Subaru or Puck. To think this is the same character that Subaru needed to save time and time again in Season 1 and the first half of Season 2. Can we really say at this point Rem is better than Emilia in terms of character development? Rem may have had a major impact on Subaru as a character, but she's also the reason Subaru went down a dark spiral. He almost lost his humanity thanks to overly relying on Return by Death thanks to her.

Rem is definitely a fan favorite, but looking at everything so far. Emilia has grown way more than Rem did with the little time we've had with her. Subaru changed thanks to Rem and nothing will ever change that, but Emilia has become independent now. She no longer needs Subaru or Puck to accomplish things.

I feel like a reason why echidna cried was that she was somewhat resentful and jealous of Emilia. Echidna gives Emilia the chance to experience her desired future, but she denies it because she was aware that it wasn't real. Echidna being the greedy ambitious witch with many desires, felt envious that Emilia was content with what she has in the real world. It's quite poetic that echidna resents/despises/envies Emilia and even the witch of envy herself, Satella, assuming they are the same person or not.

Thank you! I wondered about this scene. Empathy is not really my strong suit and I don't get jealousy either... After your comment I think it may be that Echidona is jealous because she's driven by greed and thus can never reach happiness. Whenever she achieves something, she just jumps to the next project and can't really enjoy the moment of victory... Emilia however, can reach happiness and enjoy even the little things... That's BTW something I need to work in myself as well. I once nearly died and all I could think of before passing out was _damn I won't be able to finish my ToDo-list_ this realisation made me feel really pathetic...

Calling Emilia a "Blank slate" during Season 1 is just unfair. She had development in there, way subtler and less on the nose than Rem's, but she goes through a parallel and very similar journey to Subaru's during those 20+ episodes. Remember how the story starts: Emilia stops to help and heal Subaru, who is basically a hobo, all while the most important thing she has, the royal insignia, has been stolen by an unknown thief. That small piece of jewelry is her entry ticket and proof she is worthy to enter the Royal Selection, losing it means the entire thing is over, and yet she took time to not only help Subaru, but to allow him to accompany her in the pursuit even if it meant she would lose precious time. This act of kindness that makes Subaru want to do all the things he does in order to save her in that First Arc, the anime makes it obvious those gestures moved him enough for him to risk his well-being to save her, Felt's and Rom's lives. Then there is the Second Arc. There were a few scenes cut from the anime, and the way they portrayed it didn't exactly make this part of her relationship with Subaru obviously clear as Rem saying "I love you" to his face, but in EVERY single loop of that deadlock Emilia was the one who walked a mile to make sure he was alright - in the cold world of Re: Zero she was always the one who cared about him. Other people demanded things from him, or wanted him to prove himself before befriending him, but Emilia was consistently kind and welcoming to him without expecting anything in return. Remember the loop after Subaru found out Rem and Ram hated him, where he just stood on his bed the entire time? Emilia comes around the second day and spoon feeds him soup to make sure he is eating properly. He tries to complain and deny it, but she insists and he eventually concedes, and this starts opening his eyes to what kind of person she is. It is only by the final loop of the mansion arc, when he is broken and stressed out and Emilia offers him her lap and stays with him even after he cries himself to sleep that he TRULY falls in love with her. Up until that point it was only lighthearted flirting, Subaru trying to impress a pretty girl, but after she sees his pain and offers him that small amount of patience and understanding, this is where he fully falls for her. It is no longer a "he likes her" but a "he loves her". THIS is the point where his infatuation becomes full out love. It is only by Third Arc, when they go to the Capital and Subaru witnesses how the world treats and sees her that he realizes that EMILIA DOESN'T HAVE ANYONE HERSELF. Subaru had her picking him up with small acts of compassion during the other two Arcs, but Emilia had no one. No one would stand up for her, to care for her, to utter caring words for her or to do what she had been doing for him ever since he arrived in their world. This is what motivates him to talk back to the Elders at the Palace, and even though Subaru screws everything up due to his own arrogance and selfishness, this is where he comes from. As we all know, Subaru gets desperate and eventually tries to give up, but Rem REFUSES TO RUN AWAY WITH HIM and then teaches him the true meaning of love, and this helps Subaru pick himself up and continue to try and save Emilia in the way he feels she saved him. Again, the anime makes it subtle. Emilia doesn't outright says that she cares about Subaru, but she proves how deeply she worries about him in every action she takes, and their dynamic becomes one where Subaru thinks Emilia does too much for him, because her kindness keeps him sane during the pain and suffering he has to endure, and Emilia thinks Subaru does too much for her, because she always notices how much he pushes himself to do things for her. By the end of Season 1 is the VERY START of their romance, because only by then Subaru grew enough to seriously understand what a mature, healthy love is, and Emilia finally understands that, despite the way she views herself and how the world looks at her, Subaru TRULY cares about her, in a way no one has ever done before. The end of Season 1 is the PERFECT setup for Season 2, as planned by the author. This is why Season 1 ends with Subaru declaring his love for her while saying he won't force her and will wait for her answer. There isn't a need for a kiss, or for her to tell she loves him back, Emilia's reaction shows how deeply she cares for him, and that she accepts him fully as she tries to grasp what it means to love someone in such way. And guess what? Season 2 gave us the EXACT continuation of that. It isn't that Emilia was an empty shell that was only filled now, but that her development from childish girl to a young woman ran parallel to Subaru, matching his steps, but without the same amount of screen time.

dam i wish i could save comments. you described it so perfectly. i always thought people were too harsh on emilia. ever her on herself. a lot of the caring things and feats she has done, were erased by return by death. that is why subaru confuses her so much, because in the current timeline she didn't do as much for him. and when people call her useless, what could she have done?? she didn't know what was going on half the time because her allies were her enemies and there were more enemies that NO ONE knew about except subaru b/c of his amazing ability. Sure, REM def got better development, but that's not a knock on Emilia. Her character was beautiful from ep 1 when she went out of her way to make Subaru feel like he didn't owe her. That made her a tragic goddess to me, someone who will take care of everyone but herself. And now I am glad Subaru has stepped up to that plate!

A lot of people may not know this, but the reflection thing in this episode is exceedingly powerful. It shows Emilia's colossal growth as a character, as she had always hated and feared her own appearance-- relying on Puck to remove any mirrors. It got to the point where she subconsciously avoided anything that reflects her own appearance, which may also call back to her reflection appearing in Subaru's eyes... An amazing thing to think about.

The anime never stated most of the specifics in Emilia and Puck's contract. But one part was that Emilia could not look at her own reflection. So when she sees herself in the lake, that was the first time she saw her own face since meeting Puck.

It’s actually a bit more literal than that. She didn’t have a full grasp of what she looked like because she avoided mirrors and reflective surfaces during her life because she hated the fact that everyone despised her for the way she looked (exactly like how Satella looks). She developed a trauma of sorts due to it and it got to the point where puck would make sure that if she went to a lake the water would be moving so her reflection wouldn’t be clear and stuff like that.

The longer the series goes on, the more I really like Emilia as a character. I like her for the same reason I really like Subaru: she's flawed. Her always having to be saved by people, acknowledging that fact, and then making an effort to change makes her a whole lot more interesting than Rem for me. Rem of course had baggage of her own, but it really was resolved too easily imo. After that, coma or not, there really wasn't much to her left besides helping Subaru back on his feet, which of course was an extremely important role to play, but Emilia's journey to become a better person just has greater substance to me.

Rem as a character was never resolved, just her character of who she is was basically resolved so there nothing more to her then her being a side character as much as petra or Ram or Otto or Garfiel, you get the idea. However Rem's "core" self was never resolved at all she basically stayed the same except she learned to instead just loving Ram she learned to love two people instead and that was it nothing of her changed. She still was Subaru 2.0 of obsessing and idealizing except the difference is. Subaru gradually got obsessed with Emilia overtime because he wanted to do thing's for her in exchange for her to love him back because that is how a "heroine" was suppose to be when you save her. Where Rem was obsessed with him day 1 and her love for him was so deep from day 1 all she could think about was Subaru and wanting to basically have his children from well day 1, so every night she would go to his bedside watch him sleep, she would tempt herself to not r*pe him and she would stalk him and praise him at everything little he did and did EVERYTHING for him when came to his needs which forces to lose people autonomy since basically mothering him as if he is in infant.

To me, Echidna’s crying was the most shocking thing in the epi. Her VA nailed the trying not-to-sob-but-the-tears-are-already-flowing line. I don’t think those are tears of anger or jealousy. She honestly wept. Why? It’s a true mystery. Rieri is putting in some career defining work as Emilia. I know she’s a “go to” VA already, but her work as Emilia, especially this season, has been beyond amazing!

Chibi is truly one of the few that actually understands the motives within each character. So many reactors tend to ignore the smaller details and think that the characters are just one-dimensional while thinking that RBD is the only way to solve a problem. Granted they may not have read the original source, but sheesh some people react only to fight scenes and expect to do better in their place. SPOILER... Beware folks..... If people still think that Subaru and Emilia are your everyday run-of-the-mill characters by the end of the season, Arc 5 and Arc 6 will have people possibly rage quitting.

To save you all from wasting your time with the comments. Here are the main reasons that people are using to down play Emilia. 1. That if it wasn't for Rem helping Subaru and saving him in Ep18 that Emilia would have never even been saved by Subaru 2. That she cries, struggles and is needing the help of others First off Rem would have NEVER even saved Subaru if it wasn't for Emilia and Subaru's first meeting which gave him purpose in this unknown world, he would have not only not met Rem but also wouldn't have even saved her to begin with. Emilia aslo helped and comforted at another one of his darkest moments when he was getting murdered by Rem and Emilia saved him again and also made it so Rem couldn't kill Subaru since not only was Subaru on Emilia's lap that day but Emilia also reinforced the idea that Subaru is good. Meaning Rem would have NEVER even cared or been saved by Subaru without Emilia. To add even further Rem nor any other character wouldn't EXIST without Emilia since the author main reason to write Re Zero was and is Emilia and her character. Secondly why is crying, struggling and being dependant a bad thing? Have you seen Re Zero? So many characters have struggled, cried snd depended on others. The literal lesson and turning point of this arc is Subaru depending on those around him. Rem literally shifted from Ram onto Subaru and still has her inferiority complex and throughout S1she cried multiple times except when murdering Subaru. Otto, Garfiel, Beatrice all needed someone. Being dependant isn't bad, being top dependant is. And Emilia has only 2 people to depend on right now and they both left her for most of the time untill the kiss.

I've always enjoyed Emilia and found her great character, I figured she get even better over time. I adore Rem, her aspirations and love for subaru is not as one-dimensional as some are claiming, unless their living under rock and missed 100% context for her entire role and why people initially adored her. She even implicited said it "Her reason to die, her reason to live", though it bit darker aspect it clear her life was hollow, her aspirations none aside from revenge, and subaru went out of his way to change that for her, helping her in ways he'll never know. Plus the tradegy that she is effectively comatose, and more or less dead at this time was brutal for subaru. This does not invalidate either characters, they have their strengths, their flaws, yet their both truly amazing characters. I am avid fan of Rem, though I am aware author intentions are blantantly obvious whose end goal is. I just find it annoying when people feel need to belittle and downplay another character contributions or existence in some false hope it gives strength to other, when really it just unwarranted. You do not need to put down one to lift another, do not need to insult character who has it active fans. It doesn't speak well of you or your adoration if you feel need to bring down rem to pull emilia up...It feels hollow. If not...off cause you can do emilia praise without it. Had to vent, just looking over comments that were beyond frustation. Their is no objective reason to rem, if you aren't fan fine, but emilia praise should not have venom tainting it.

The reason I got so defensive, that this reply even exists is so many people after shifting their liked relations would rather push REM down, fictional entity did have her contributions in early story that are both postive and negative. IF!Story does follow more 'unique' perceptive off relationship that growth too, while main is continuing forward. Ever since her infancy she always saw herself as the spare and the extra, the one that no one wanted and that ended up ruining the destiny Ram was meant to have. She has no sense of self worth unless it is to make other people around her happy. Subaru helps her deal with her hatred for herself, but the fundamental flaw of Rem depending on other people for her sense of identity is still there. Remember that we see the show from Subaru's perspective, and while Rem's new attachment to him helps him when he is almost at the point of giving up, she still has that very harsh and fundamental flaw, one that Subaru himself doesn't notice. While Rem has her qualities and is a good character, this way of living would lead to self destruction. She would eventually wear herself out. People do ignore that for the sake 'muh waifu', however...

Subaru jumps of cliff onto rocks so he can die, and save rem. Emilia jumps of cliff into beautiful crystal clear water and sees her reflection. Artistically its a beautiful symbolic scene. character wise its quite frankly insulting to subaru and undermines his sacrifice in that moment.
