My 2 cents... The word "date" used to have a very standard meaning. 2 people, both acknowledging an attraction to the other, to do an activity to learn more about the other, with an eye towards finding out if they were compatible and if they wanted to go on more dates. Note! This is not exclusive. People went on dates with multiple people in the same week/month. These days, I find that some people use this old definition, and some use a definition more along the lines of courting... Those people will ask "are we dating"... To which an answer of "yes" is interpreted to mean that the couple is exclusive. In the old days, exclusivity used the term "going steady". So the danger of using the term "date"... Is that is can set up a false expectation in the girl has the modern definition in mind. Where with "hang out" there is no risk of setting up a false expectation of exclusivity.

Yes! Activities are always the way to go for a first date! It allows you to have something to focus on in case you come across an awkward pause in the conversation. Plus it will give you more things to talk about as you are doing whatever activity you decide on. Going to dinner could be awkward because if you have an awkward pause there is nothing to distract you and could make for a cringy time.

YES on the shoes (Holla!). The only thing I'd add is to also find out if the girl can tolerate fragrances. I'm one of those people who are really sensitive to scents -- ranging from non-stop sneezing to feeling like I can't breathe -- so that's just a side note to the gentlemen.

SO Interesting situation: we're both in college; I'm a Junior and she's a graduate student (few years difference). We met at our Church and talk basically every week after the student mass. To be completely honest, I'm trending in the direction of super "traditional" with regard to my faith, and I get the feeling she is too from our brief conversations - so obviously I'm interested. Problem is I am currently doing a sort of religious 90 day challenge for men that won't be over until after Easter... Once it is, there will only be 3ish weeks left in the semester before I leave the area for the summer (a little over an hour drive from the area where she lives)... I want to take her our on a low key coffee date though - is that just not a good idea for the first date for adults (wasn't sure what age group this was targeting)? Also, is the timing thing something to consider? Just thinking about it from where i'm at now, I think it might be smarter to wait until senior year and go for it then just so that there's more time to fit some dates in before either of us leaves the area.
