Talk so much shit about him doing this song, but I agree with you 100%. I'm 40, and you know how many times I cried listening to this song when I was younger? It applies to both my parents.

I'm glad he did the "Headlights" way later. When the anger had subsided and he had managed to get things under control. In the end hate only destroys you.

Headlights was one of the first signs I remember seeing where Eminem was actively letting the hate and angst go because he realized it was doing more harm than good and as he's been getting older, he'd rather live with love and not hate but he'll remind you to not get it twisted lol

I blast Em in my car all the time man. I listen to Em when I workout. I listen to Em when I’m mad or sad or going through something difficult in my life. I listen to Em when I’m happy. There are so many layers to Em that some people don’t give him credit for. I’ve been listening to Em since he first dropped the Slim Shady LP in 99 when I was a little kid in 6th grade lol, I will always support him.

Eminem realized later on when the state took his brother away.. that what his mother did was a sickness she couldn't control. I think ever since then is when the healing really started to begin. His brother was damn lucky that Eminem was in a position to take over as a guardian so he didn't have to grow up in foster care!

I was a HS senior when SSLP was released, in foster care and more heavily in Linkin Park/Blink 182, but I loved Guilty Conscience (mostly for Dre). Cleaning Out My Closet stuck a deep chord in me, it was one song that had me revisit all of Em’s discography and made me appreciate his work. This one song was essential for him to start any type of healing, I felt that to the core. Although, he made Highlights to apologize to his mom later on, there’s pain and experiences that can never be forgiven or forgotten.

One of my favorites of his. Maybe not the greatest but it spoke to me like few other songs did. And don't get me wrong, my parents are amazing. But the "Sorry Mama, I never meant to hurt you"-line is just soooo relatable for everyone who is even a tiny bit angry at their mother. Even just for stupid shit or hormones. It's this... this genuine feeling of "I really don't want to hurt you but I need to get this off my chest and it's more about me than about you but you'll get dragged through mud anyway - sorry 'bout that"-thing. It just hit me the first time I saw this and listened to this song when it released. Also, his rhyme-patterns are just insane and fascinating, especially for someone who'd until then never much listened to rap at all. It's like a truly interesting jigsaw-puzzle

,,Cleaning out my closet" was his inner child crying for help, and dealing with the trauma he had experienced. ,,Headlights" was the story of a grown man, who was finally able to let go of all the hate and hurt. I am glad he successfully broke the cycle of an abusive family, and didn't let his experiences destroy him. Imagine a life without Marshall Mathers; it's a scary thought for me.

The more I watch Eminem's body language the more I feel like all of his anger was more out of hurt than just to be crazy Slim Shady. I've listened to this song so many times and I feel dumb for just now realizing Eminem's anger in this song wasn't pure hatred, he was hurt and upset. If it was pure hatred then he'd still hate his mom to this day but he doesn't and to me, I'm just happy he's been able to get rid of most of his demons with the only thing that still haunts him to this day is Proof's untimely death.

I relate a bit to this song, just the other way round, towards my father. My mom was the rock in my family holding us together. My father was pretty absent in my childhood. It was probably for the better, my mom raised me better than he could have. Forgiveness is more about you and your peace of mind than them
@robbob530210 ай бұрын
This is one of those Frankenstein moments, where the creation outlives the will of the creator. Having patched things up with his mom, Eminem quickly regretted releasing this song. While he no longer sings it live, it is still played on the radio. And unfortunately, it was one of his strongest songs. So it is played a lot.

There's loads of stories about Em not being afraid of anyone, he may not of had the reputation in the streets of people like 50 because he weren't looking for trouble or reputation but he has always stood his ground and wouldn't be bullied, that shows with his beefs hes had. I hear people say all the time he's never beefed with anyone significant but that's because when you look back everyone he's seriously gone against has started it and Em just replied and finished it, i can guarantee if anyone like Jay or Nas had a problem with Em and dissed him seriously he 100% would of replied but just as he respects the greats they also respect him and know he's a monster who wouldn't back down the interview with Game back in the day showed that.

It is a painful song to listen to. Especially after Headlights is joined in the mix. We felt them both...those of us in his age range, experiencing something around these things. At some point in time the rage and anger can subside. Perhaps something is learned that helps you to understand. I love/hate both songs. They are very real and very hard. That is what makes Eminem the GOAT. He goes there where others might not feel capable of. And at the same time, he was able to grow, mature, and bring out Headlights. Again very real, raw, and something I do not think too many would touch. +

Fun Eminem Fact that I had zero clue about. His song "CLEANING OUT MY CLOSET" not only was the beat made entirely by EMINEM but the beat wasn't even supposed to be for Himself, Actually that beat was being created for BIZARRE because he was messing around making a beat & Bizarre walked into the studio at like 7:00am solo & heard it getting made & he said "Ay Marshall that beat is 🔥 AF do you think I can have it for my new album? " And Eminem said immediately "Yea bro it's yours". Well like 6 months went by & it was time for Eminem to get really serious about crafting THE EMINEM SHOW & while looking through thousands of beats he stumbled across the beat that was supposed to be for Bizarre & he hit up bizarre & asked if he was ok with him using the beat & obviously Bizarre said yes & in return EM gave him 3 beats (2 By Eminem & 1 by DRE which was worth more than gold 🪙)........ So Em created the classic CLEANING OUT MY CLOSET on a Beat he made for Bizarre, And the other fun fact about that song is that the HOOK we all know & love was actually just a Reference Hook that EM was gonna have MARY J BLIGE sing but things got really hectic & Mary fell through so Dre told Em that it sounded way better from him than it ever would being sung by a singer. So with Dre giving it the DR stamp of approval It stayed with EM on the hook & that hook we hear on the finished product wasn't Fe-Recorded or anything, It was the original Reference vocals... So, Now just imagine if Bizarre would have took the beat home that day to write then record on it, Then imagine if Mary J didn't fall through. How crazy it would have been to not have the song we all know & love the way it is, but obviously we wouldn't know any other versions if it went a different direction
