Yeah that's good advice. Reviews are great because they allow for fun discussion and commentary of music but artists should not take that stuff to heart since it's just people's opinions/they can do what they want.
@RayyanKhanRayyanKhan2 жыл бұрын
It's easy to say this but I think a lot of people forget just how much influence a big reviewer on the internet has. If they give an album a bad review, their followers are less likely to give it a fair chance, while good reviews can pull in an entirely new fanbase. I think it's unreasonable but understandable that some artists take it to heart, especially if they feel the reviewer misunderstood the work or is not in a position to fairly evaluate the work.
@Carlos-ln8fd2 жыл бұрын
@@RayyanKhanRayyanKhan I really don't think that's the case. So many albums are incredibly comercially succesful despite bad critical ratings. You see it every day. Also I used to work in magazines and sometimes publish movie reviews for obscure films and even when they were negative I would hear from so many people who watched them just because of my reviews because they thought the movie looked interesting. And I'm just some nobody but I've heard the same thing from actual critics like film journalist Mark Kermode who claims to get letters all the time from people saying they went to see movies he hated to prove him wrong or to form their own opinions. I mean, there are many albums I have not listened to because my friends have told me they're not worth my time or I've read negative reviews and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. You only have limited time and money so any kind curation is appreciated.
@RayyanKhanRayyanKhan2 жыл бұрын
@@Carlos-ln8fd You're entitled to believe that, and you're right in that all artists will have some kind of fanbase irrespective of reviews. But again, the number of prospective people who could be interested in your work is influenced partially by ratings. I am confident that an artist like Lingua Ignota's listeners increased considerably after Fantano gave her album a perfect score. In the same way, a negative score can really compound on people's perception of an artist. For example, Logic had some of the worst hate-trains because of his COADM run.
@Tirgo692 жыл бұрын
Logic would have been mindblown by this advice, should have been hanging out with Em more
@Carlos-ln8fd2 жыл бұрын
@@RayyanKhanRayyanKhan Okay, but think about it. If a review makes people hate your album that either means A. That person listened to it and didn't like it which you can't get mad about because you're not entitled to people liking your music or B. People didn't really listen to it and they're just mindlessly repeating what the reviewer said in which case their opinion is worthless and not a reflection of the merit of your work. And I agree that negative reviews sometimes lead to hate, but what I would argue is that it often doesn't lead to commercial failure. Isn't it common knowledge that most things critics praise as great are largely ignored by wide audiences? I think Fantano is a weird case since he's the biggest music critic in the world (something he has admitted) and many big music outlets hardly ever post reviews anymore so he's in a special position where he could "help" artists by giving them positive reviews, but that would betray all that he represents. He became big because he was honest about the things that he liked, not because he had "good taste" or anything like that. If he suddenly became afraid to be negative, then there would be no point to him even doing reviews, since if you're recommending everything then we're back at where we started.

Make like 7 songs that are like that and then if he can't think of anything else, just make an emotional track that will make his nerdy fans go "this is why he's the Goat, he doesn't just make edgy songs, he raps from the heart 😭🌌💅" Him at his peak wasn't really an album artist either, he just made songs that are so good and are good together as an album because everything was perfect. He had an interesting life, he had a controversial rise, he made a controversial response to that rise and it was a banger. Rn, he just doesn't know what to do and we can't really blame him, his peak was when the world was against him, and now nobody is really against him so he constantly have to diss some random people to make himself believe that he still got it

@Johannes read it again, webhead. He's not an album artist, he just made 3 great albums and never knew how to properly do it again. He's a singles artist that happened to make great albums in the past, if he was analbum artist, he wouldn't have made Encore. He thought it was a matter of time before people started calling that album Illmatic when in reality it aged the worst. Was viewed as one of his weakest albums then and still one of his weakest albums now

@@danielgray65 SSLP is one of my favorite albums ever, and I am an old guy like you who has been listening to Hip Hop since 1995 and has listened to around two thousand records. RYM stands for "Rate Your Music". It's a site full of a very specific type of music fan. They are young Hipsters, mostly white, who go for more experimental/indie music and regard everything mainstream to be trash. They would never score an Eminem album above a 5/10 or so. They are snobs with super-elitist tastes in music, but when you look at their play lists, they actually don't know much Hip Hop at all. They usually go for artists and bands, like, etc Danny Brown, Asop Rocky, Brockhampton, Anderson Paak, etc. Nobody in the hood listens to that shit. I grew up in Miami among mostly blacks and Latinos, and nobody actullay listens to that type of pretentious artsy Hip Hop. The most pretentious Hip Hop someone would listen to would be someone like Lupe Fiasco or J Cole, and even that is pushing. It's the type of pretentious "Hip Hop" made to please white Hipsters.
@danielgray652 жыл бұрын
@@petercoderch589 Peter, thank you so much for that long reply, it means a lot and it clarifies a lot of stuff up. Never heard of that site, maybe I'll check it out one day. I remember when Eminem was everyone's jam no matter what music you like or what clique you were in, so I can't believe it's now cool to act like he has no albums above a 5 (I fuck with Relapse and Recovery, even parts of MMLP2). Even Fantano gave Eminem a solid 7 for MMLP2, which a lot of people hated -- it's good music anyway you slice it. I definitely feel you on the pretentious angle, I love listening to guys like MF DOOM and Lupe Fiasco, those two have been up there with Em for me since the early 2000s. So many DOOM fans tried to turn me on Aesop Rock's music, and while I like his lyrics, I think his songs are boring as hell and his flow is monotone. Puts me to sleep. His approach to writing music is nothing like DOOM's, I still don't understand why that fanbase praises Aesop Rock so much -- he is basically a great poet, but not an emcee. A great poet AND a great emcee is my dude Ka, from Brownsville Brooklyn. You hit the nail on the head how guys like Lupe and Cole are about the threshold for what the hood plays. Not that I really care, but no way in fuck is Brockhampton and Aesop Rock getting bumped there. I'm from NYC, I'd say a guy like Joey Bada$$ would be about as far it goes around here for what the hood would play out loud -- hood won't even play a guy like Childish Gambino (tho I think he made great rap albums). These youngins need to be schooled on Public Enemy, that is the heart and fucking soul of hip hop. Anyways, peace n love from a black n white oldhead, haha.

Ha. Thing is, the latter day stuff I've heard from Eminem, that I don't really like.. it's still really impressive most times. His technical skills are as sensational as ever. I just don't care for a lot of the beats and modern day production. Not just him, all current hip-hop, pretty much. It's all trying to do much, cause it's an industry bubble that can't see outside of itself, which is totally normal. I can recognize what the artist put into it, the brilliance that might be there, but the song itself usually doesn't have a lot of replay value for me personally, cause the production is so computerized it takes the emotion out to my ears. I think Eminem is best with beats that compliment his raw emotion. Like the stuff on his first two or three albums, the 8 mile stuff. Id love if he did a whole album with beats like the "8 mile road" track. Stripped down, without all the modern frills I don't like. My favorite rap is 90s rap for that reason. Mobb Deep's "Infamous", Nas' "Illmatic", Wu Tangs "36 chambers", that one Raekwon album etc. 2pac was untouchable with more minimalist beats, his emotion always gives me chills. But when he switched to a more Cali sound, it could be hit or miss, for me personally. Still, "Only God Can Judge me", "No More Pain", "Heartz of Men" are as good as anything. Just not a fan of a lot of the oversaturated hooks on a lot of hip-hop since the early days. The swoony chorus'. Stuff gets old and dated really fast. Em's "Rock Bottom" never ever gets old etc. Would love if he went back to the grittiness over modern beats where he just Raps as fast as possible. The skill he displays is awe-inspiring, but the actual songs lack the same replay value. Anyway, I'm not right or anything, just how I experience it. Still songs he does that I appreciate from time to time though, glad he's still doing it. But I miss "the way I am" ha, that fire, the simplicity to the music that compliments the emotion of it
