Sorry for your loss. I lost a dog that was seven years old about 10 years ago. I know the feeling. Maybe consider getting a new hedgehog of another color or species? That would probably help with the grief, but also not feel like you're just replacing your old animal. They seem to have quite a lot of different colorings. The long-eared hedgehog is quite adorable. Don't know how good pets they make though. But they do exist in the pet trade.

A bittersweet story I've told a few times in youtube comments. My uncle had a wonderfully loyal main coon named Mister. Main coons for those who don't know are one of the largest breeds of house cat, sometimes getting as big as an Australian shepherd (I imagine they would give great hugs but I can't say for certain) . My uncle has some major health problems that occasionally see him bed ridden. Mister, when he was sick, would sit with him on the bed leaving ONLY to eat and use the litter box for the duration. About 9 years ago, Mister passed away. My uncle was understandably distraught and was in poor spirits. A few days later, when he was sitting around and thinking about his lost buddy, he heard a noise on his porch. Going to investigate he opened the door. As the door opened, a black kitten maybe a month old sauntered passed him into his place. Casually made itself at home and meowed at my uncle like, 'Sup, when's dinner?' No one in the neighborhood had kittens, not one of his neighbors knew of any stray cats in the area and no one had ANY idea where the little guy came from. To this day they still don't know. The little guy is 9 years old now and my uncle loves him dearly.

I have a story with a happy ending! There was this pitbull who'd spent most of her two years in shelters, one of them she almost didn't make it out alive. Before that, she'd been severely abused. But, the dog was picked up by an animal rescue in California and then brought to Canada by another. Then, she was left there for a good six months. You know what happened next? She was adopted and is being trained to become a service dog. Let me tell you, I couldn't ask for a better companion/assistant. Her name is Baby, and today she went into a store for the very first time; she pulled once or twice, but was amazing otherwise. She's a natural! As a reward, she got to pick out a treat from the shelf - a 25 pack of dental chews. Baby's gone from scared that I'm going to beat her, to sleeping right next to me and offering her tummy to be pet. She knows that she's safe now. We needed each other, I think.
