The one thing that I learned while being certified for Safe Serve certification is that a LOT of people do NOT know how to effectively wash their hands. We did a demo using a florescent 'virus." Out of 7 people, only one had clean hands, and even then just barely. The WORST performer - hand sanitizer.

A question, having never been on a cruise, do they make it easy to wash your hands? I go on a tutored holiday course every year which is at a school. We all have to queue up for food in the canteen. The school talk the big talk about various things, but they don’t make anything easy, such as a sensible place with good traffic flow for efficient hand washing. So people don’t. To got to the nearest sink you have to back track through multiple doors, none of which open without your touch, all are tight to manoeuvre through and we’re all carrying equipment, and then lots of the sinks/soaps are often out of order. When you have a cello or bassoon and a music case strapped to you…….

Just a little tip for anyone who might not know: *Hand sanitizer does not do anything whatsoever to prevent Norovirus.* What is needed is a 20-second hand wash when you enter the buffet, and then once again right after you’ve gone through the buffet, just before sitting down to eat. Thats my ritual, and so far, it’s kept me pretty healthy.

Why not just wash your paws after you scoop your food onto the plate but before eating. Seems like you're doing double the work for no benefit. Doing it right before eating is the best remedy for not getting sick.

@@andyphillips7437 No they don’t. “Hand sanitizer is not an effective way to prevent norovirus and should not be used as a substitute for hand washing. Norovirus is a nonenveloped virus, which means it has a protective protein shell that alcohol-based hand sanitizers can't penetrate. As a result, alcohol can't kill the virus.” -the CDC
@ChuckFickens19722 ай бұрын
Thank you for teaching me something today, I initially didn't believe your claim that alcohol based hand sanitiser doesn't do anything for Norovirus, but 5 minutes of research proved me wrong and you correct.
@TVHouseHistorian2 ай бұрын
@@alexnutcasio936 because cruise lines now require you to wash your hands *before* entering the buffet, which helps cut down the initial viral load being transferred to the tongs and scoops at the buffet. An additional hand washing just before sitting down to eat cuts down the viral load on your hands even more substantially, thus cutting your chances of becoming ill even further during the sailing.

Hey Emma.. I am a retired Nurse Practitioner in the US. Many many years ago I started traveling with a box of 100 cheap disposable plastic gloves and sanitizing hand wipesI would tuck several pairs in a pocket and use them at buffets when handling tongs, etc.. after sitting down I would take my gloves off, use my hand wipes and enjoy my meal. Everyone that I traveled with did the same thing. None of us ever got sick. We used to get stared at alot but that no longer happens. Now we often get comments about what a great idea that is. Now we also wash our hands when soap and water is available, thanks to Covid.
@merrillundgren17902 ай бұрын
But as you know as a nurse practitioner, while washing and sanitizing hands are very important, Covid is an aerosolized virus, meaning it can stay in the air for hours, being breathed in by others.
@MissySkywalker2 ай бұрын
Unfortunately that won’t help prevent COVID. Covid is airborne
@VideoArchiveGuy2 ай бұрын
That's a lovely thought, but unfortunately the people before you didn't even wash their hands and accidentally dropped the back of the tongs into the dish and just grabbed it and pulled it out of the food. I've seen that regularly, so all you're doing is preventing the transmission of illness from YOUR hands to YOUR food - still laudable but not really preventing what you think you are.

Hi Emma. We went on an 18 night cruise on Aurora in April. By the end of the second week, there were a huge amount of passengers with Norovirus (my wife included). I can’t imagine all those people were suffering from over indulgence, but rather virus germs passed on by people not washing their hands. We saw evidence of this all around the ship - in the public toilets, the restaurants and most noticeably in the Buffet. It was quite disgusting. We certainly don’t want to go on Aurora again. No courtesy or thoughtfulness on her part. Positively ridiculous. She should have been escorted off the ship at the nearest port for negligent behavior like that. Nevertheless, almost the entire ship came down with COVID about a day before disembarkation. A delay is when your ship moves away from the dock, move forward a bit, then stops, the backs up and redocks, and instead of setting sail at 1500 you leave 12 hours later at 0300. We lost one stop which was a spot owned by the cruise line and which others have said is so-so. I nver once thought about asking for compensation because we stopped at all the places we were supposed to and even got extra time in the morning at our first stop. But then again, some people will complain at the drop of a hat and will try and grift at every opportunity.

God, I am living the whole "people jump to stomach bug too quickly" scenario at the moment. All my kids have managed to make themselves nauseous every couple nights for like 3 weeks straight now and it's so frustrating and annoying when they'll be "sick" in the morning but cutting up and goofing off as soon as they miss the school bus.

The only thing that would convince our mum to keep us home from school was a fever or actual vomiting - just whining that we didn’t feel well fell on deaf ears! Once when she was off on a trip we fooled our dad into letting us stay home by holding the thermometer near a light bulb.

As a retired teacher of over 3 decades of experience, it used to drive me crazy when parents would say (in front of their kiddos), "He's not been feeling well this morning, so call me to pick him up if you need to." YUP! Just take him now. Otherwise, the child was fine after a few minutes with friends.

My mom had a firm rule. If we complained we were have stomach troubles in order to stay home, we had to swallow two cap fulls of Pepto Bismal Liquid. She knew we hated it so much that we would only swallow it if we were truly sick. The number of miraculous recoveries on my brothers was legendary. On the other hand we had it lucky. My dad's family lived with his grandmother and she always had a large bottle of cod liver oil on the sideboard and any child, grandchild or great grandchild that complained about their tummy had to swallow 2 big spoonfuls of it.

We were aboard Carnival Horizon when the word came down post-COVID that the crew were finally allowed to work without masks...and they were jubilant, and we were happy for them. We had made friends with our female dining-room server and that night, when she arrived NOT wearing a mask, we all pretended not to know who she was...until my friend John playfully held a cloth napkin up to her face. "Oh, THERE she is!" That was fun, and she LOVED it. :)

We traveled on Aurora in November to Amsterdam. The ship was very full. They were encouraging people to use the hand sanitizer or to wash hands before entering the buffet, but if someone thought they knew better they could have just walked through. Even though I hadn’t heard of any issues before our trip. I made sure that we also sanitised our hands once we sat down with our food as I have cruised before, and it is just something that I am mindful of. We did enjoy our time on the ship, I loved the Crow’s Nest too, but it was very busy as the weather was very cold, so people were reluctant to go outside for the sail away.

The dangle strings from behind the TV set is a "latch release" so that you can pull the TV out slightly to reach the input/output ports. Normally, they are hidden up behind the set.

Elo ema , the aurora is a beautiful ship, whith living rooms like Titanic. You make good movies from the ships that you travel. The Orianna is simeler. Good holiday for you , and the best travel . 😊

Emma your estimate of the probability of getting a virus at school or on a ship is mistaken. The right calculus would be the number of outbreaks divided by the population on cruise ships versus schools. There are far more people in schools than on cruise ships. I don't have the numbers to calculate them but I suspect that the rate for ships is much much higher than 1%.

Was on that ship last year, beautiful ship had a lovely cruise. Did you see the "Golden Cock" near guest services. Its the P&O trophy for the ship with the fastest recorded speed in the fleet!

She looks a lovely old ship. It never fails to amaze me how often passengers want compensation for things that the cruise line simply had no control over.
