Hi Emma, love your sweater collection, like yourself I am crazy about cashmere and wool and natural fibers. I have eradicated anything synthetic from my wardrobe years ago. Was never a fan of any brand of fast fashion either. All aspects of sustainability have become very important to me in recent years. Your videos are so appreciated for the styling and tips on brands as well. Funnily enough, I come from Chile, the land of Alpaca (though I live in Canada) but I didn't know that they graze lightly on the grass without hurting the roots. How great is that!

Bravo to the amount of research that went into making this video!!! I've recently acquired the turtleneck from The Curated and as a fabric freak myself, I couldn't be happier with the quality!! I appreciate you shifting your purchases to more sustainable brands; you inspired me to do the same!! I quit shopping fast fashion almost entirely (I am very privileged to do so, of course). Now I have sweaters I've been wearing for 5 or 6 seasons (from everlane, their cashmere holds up very well!) I also recently came across a knitwear brand called "sheep included": they include the information of the sheep from whom the sweater's wool is from! Would love to hear your opinion if you ever came across this brand! Also, who would I be if I were to comment here without appreciating Simon's editing! It's as beautiful and smooth as ever!

Love that you're talking more about sustainable fashion. It's honestly a bit depressing for me to go in an H&M and see racks and racks full of synthetic knitwear. What happens to those sweaters after a few wears? They aren't good enough to resell, so I suspect many ultimately end up in landfills. In contrast, good quality knitwear can be worn for years or resold if you decide you no longer like it. I'm also an Arket fan (thanks in part to your videos)! I'm actually wearing one of their wool midi sweater dresses now, and it's like going around all day wrapped up in a wool blanket.

Beautiful collection! Thanks for sharing and for the recs. Sadly I suffer wool allergies and also alpaca. I’ve replaced my knitwear with 100% cotton across the board. Not as warm, but no itchy eyes, chapped lips, scratchy throat or runny nose (seriously lame!) I’ve had great luck buying second hand Ralph Lauren and LLBean knits- great quality and classic styles. Poshmark and thrift stores have loads to choose from. Love your channel Emma!!

Not only that alpacas dont damage the roots thanks to their light and particular way to step, but they havent damaged the pavements and roads where they stepped by either, a fact that helps to preserve 100 years ancient roads and facilities in the Andes. As someone with major wool allergies I've yet to find any wool that doesn't cause a reaction, including Alpaca. I've even tried layers underneath to no success. I've found cotton knit with a layering shirt underneath to be the best solution.
@mizpah19934 жыл бұрын
Same here, I have really reactive skin. Personally, I switched to thermal layers. I really like Uniqlo’s heattech range and fleeces (which actually looks like knitwear. I tend to size up and it looks stylish). My preference for natural fibre is cotton but I like a technical fabric knitwear/fleece in the colder months so I don’t get too hot (and avoiding the sweat-itch-scratch cycle altogether).
@sanfilogoff4 жыл бұрын
@@mizpah1993 definitely! It's the length of the fibres that I react to, it's not just lanolin. I can wear some merino wool jumpers with no problem. Alpaca makes me itch just holding it even 5%! A mohair mix can be bearable with a long sleeve t underneath. Lambs wool or Shetland , yak, alpaca are the devils work for me!

Thank you for great content! Just a comment on what you say about alpacca grazing vs sheep. Sheep do not take up the roots of the grass, unless they are held in very small areas and have nothing to eat, but so will the alpacca!. In Norway as in other countries, most of the sheep are in the mountains during summer and autumn, where they contribute to biodiversity through their grazing, and when you think about sustainability, wool from your homecountry is far better than wool transported across the world. Just my 2 cents.

You did a video shot of the Johnston's of Elgin Cedar Hanger , But I think it is Very Important to add that if you are going to purchase a very expensive piece of wool knit wear, you should, most definitely, protect it with cedar or moth balls & if it is over a significant amount of time- make certain that the cedar & moth balls are still working. I lost numerous precious knitwear to moth holes & I am just heart broken! I had no idea that the cedar hangers needed to be "reactivated"!! I had them in storage while I was in a climate that did not require any knit usage. Just a heads up- I am slowly rebuilding my knitwear collection- but, as you know, it is an expensive endeavor! Norwegian wool & Peruvian alpaca are also Supreme!😘

What a great video! I share your love of knitwear, especially slouchy oversized sweaters. Arket keeps teasing us in the US that they’re going to soon be available, but they’ve been saying that for years, so I haven’t been able to follow up on your suggestions yet. I recently bought a Johnstons of Elgin cashmere scarf after watching your video of your visit there, and it is truly lovely. I’m one of those people that can’t wear rough woolens next to my skin, but cashmere is just fine. Isn’t that handy? I’ve had good success with Naked Cashmere, though a bit pricey. I also love the knitwear from Babaa, a very sustainable Spanish company, as I’m sure you’re aware. I look forward to checking out Phillipa K if they ship to the US. Thank you for all the research and tips as anti-cruelty and sustainability are very important to me. I’m keeping an eye out for the new Emma x Curated blazers once you settle on the details! Oh, which reminds me, could you use your influence with The Curated and urge them to include a loose, oversized cashmere sweater in their collection? Would so love that! Oh, no, one more thing to your followers: Don’t ever dry clean anything. The process, at least in the US, is disgusting due to EPA regulations vis-a-vis disposal of chemicals, and ruinous for your clothing. Sorry for the length of this. ❤️

Love your videos! However, I can't agree on cashmere peeling. I'm a minimalist and I like to invest in quality over quantity. I had two turtlneck sweaters from a Swiss luxury department store brand (Bongenie Grieder) that haven't peeled at all in seven years. I wore those at least 200 times each, and they didn't changed sinse the day I bought them. No loss of shape, impeccable. When I got tired of them, I sold them on eBay. That's the quality I'm looking for in knitwear, but I must say it's extremely difficult to find these days. The store doesn't ship to the U.S., and I'm not sure if the quality is still the same.

Other sustainable brands I've recently been looking into and which are within what is for me a more reasonable price range are Armed Angels and TwoThirds. I was wondering what you think of Massimo Dutti in terms of price vs quality - I think they' don't score great on the sustainability front?
@EmmaHill4 жыл бұрын
I do like Massimo Dutti although as you say they aren't the best for sustainability but I do find that they offer a better quality in their items than some other high street stores and produce less which is a bonus 👍 I think if you shop high street, which I do, it will be harder to find best practice everywhere but you can still make an impact by choosing better quality items which will last longer and so reduce quantity ❤️

Most wool is ok but alpaca is a no go. I find it is the length of the fiber spun not the fiber itself. I have experienced short wool fibers and they make me itch. Alpaca is a short fiber. I am a spinner and knitter and short fibers have ends that are pokey and that is what makes many people itchy even if they aren’t technically allergic to the animal.

In Australia there are flies which lay their eggs in the wool and faeces , then the maggots eat away at the sheep , eating into it’s flesh. Mulsing prevents this - so. although mulsing doesn’t sound nice. I believe it is actually far preferable for the sheep than to have maggots eating them. I have friends with sheep on a farm, and they say that this fly strike is really horrible.

As Ms Rundle, in USA, will be searching for your labels. I’ve always believed “pilling”occurs mostly in “combined” wool sources, the inter locking yarns get agitated. What do you think. Thankyou.
