My 5week old ist awake for minimum 2hr. No chance to get him to sleep earlier. You can rock him for half an hour in your arms and you will look in two wide awake eyes. If I want to eat, shower, nap,... me hubby needs to put him in a carrier. Otherwise he would only sleep like 5hr a day. 16-18hr a day my a**. That little guy employs two people...

Wow! I was watching this video with my 3 week old sleeping on my chest and decided to try your tips! I swaddled her with her arms down (instead of using a Love to Dream), turned the air con to 22 degrees, turned the white noise machine on, made sure the room was dark enough & rock her to a drowsy state and before putting her down in her bassinet and she felt asleep immediately! You're a bloody legend, thanks for the tips!

I'm literally about to do EVERYTHING you just listed lol. I need to sleep and my baby has been having hard time. We are also struggling with breastfeeding which is throwing everything off too. Hopefully we can work on his sleep first, then maybe the breastfeeding will get easier cause he won't be so fussy from being overtired :))

With my first, I would run to him and nurse at every noise or movement. He’s nearly 5 and sleep has always been tough; he still needs assistance. I have a 7 week old now and I only assist her if she obviously needs me. She’s already a much better sleeper! This video/information is so helpful and I wish I’d had it with my first.

The Breakdown: 1. Understand sleep cycles, they may just be "light sleeping" instead of actually awake. Let them be until you know for sure they're up! 2. Keep the room cool. Babies like 65-70ish degrees. Dress them accordingly. It's better to be too cool than too hot 3. Make sure the room is dark. Not because of circadian rhythms (that's not until 3-5mo) but so that they aren't stimulated when they should be focused on sleep/falling asleep! 4. Use a consistent noise, like a sound machine, to prevent stimulation and the startle reflex so they can stay asleep. 5. Swaddle or use sleeping bags. She prefers arms down to prevent the startle reflex. Be sure to no over heat with the blanket as this is linked to SIDS. Make sure to get a good swaddle that they can't loosen or get out of. Otherwise use convenient swaddles like zip/velcro for safety. 6. Keep the environment boring (not stimulating) for middle of the night wakes. Dim lights, no screens/noises. Just change, feed, sleep. 7. Avoid an over tired baby. Cues of sleepiness- wiping eyes, yawning, zoning, looking away. The length of the nap typically determines how long they'll be awake. Typically a 3 hour nap means 2 hours of wakefulness (never more). A 30 minute nap may result in only 45 minutes of wakefulness. 8. Avoid habituating. This is when there is lots of movement, noise, and stimulation during the sleep (like being around lots of people, being held while sleeping and passed around, etc.) this keeps them from a full deep sleep. They'll be fussy after, so make sure their next nap is in a dark quiet space! 9. Using a pacifier: 6 weeks is the soonest you should start if breastfeeding. Sucking is soothing and calming. Stop the pacifier around 6 months as this is when you start sleep training and don't want them to depend on it. 8 months is about the time when they can put it back in their mouth and you don't want to get to that stage.

I definitely find that white noise is most helpful for baby to sleep deeply. They come from a very very noisy environment inside our bodies, compared to outside which is way more quiet. Also I found my babies sleep quite well while nursing. After they fell asleep I would put them down for them to continue their naps. I never put them down awake, makes no sense since breastfeeding soothes them so much that they fall asleep. I didn’t pick up baby unless I knew for sure they were awake. As long as there is a very obvious difference between day and night, their little bodies adjust all on their own. My 4 month old (3rd baby) now sleeps from 7pm to 6 am, she adjusted by herself. All I did was nurse on demand, and followed her bio rhythm. I never wake my sleeping babies. A dark quiet room only works for us if it’s night outside. You don’t want to confuse their biorhythms if your goal is for them to learn to sleep at night. And yes I used a pacifier early on to stretch the night naps little by little.

I felt the same way and I'm not going to sugar coat it bc many people did that for me and I guess I got too comfortable with the idea. The first couple of weeks were not so bad for me either but weeks 4-6 have been bad to the point I cry daily and don't have any freedom and I need sleep. I also have an amazing husband that has been helping A TON! but it's hard on him too. BUT know this, it will pass AND pediatrician thinks she's suffering from silent reflux (she slept for only 7.5 hours in 24 hours! and looks pained every time she feeds). And breastfeeding did not come easy for me or many others around me. I tell you this bc I kept blaming myself thinking I or my baby are "broken" and why does it have to be my baby who is hurting? IF something like this happens to you, just know it's not you and you and your husband will get through it. One thing I can say for certain is that your baby is going to be your world (in a great way) We love our baby so much! It's crazy. Good luck to you and remember, everything you go through during pregnancy, delivery, recovery, and fourth trimester is temporary. and it's all totally worth it! You're going to do great!

You saved my husband’s and I’s sleep! We woke up full of hope this morning because we followed these tips last night and got our 7 week old to sleep in her crib! From the beginning we had been holding her in our arms to sleep. She has no problem sleeping except it had to be in our arms! My husband and I would take shifts, it was exhausting and we hadn’t slept properly for a month and half. We would watch other babies sleeping so peacefully in their cribs and couldn’t understand how they did it. Thank you so much for this video 👍🏻

Ha. I used a pacifier from week 1. It helps enormously. I want to know is why some babies fight sleep. My 3 week old will close her eyes, and show all signs of tiredness, and then BAM her eyes are wide open. Sometimes she can sit and stare for 40 minutes, sometimes she starts crying. I’ve put her down after 30 minutes in some cases, so there is no way she’s over tired, and yet… she just wants to stare into space. Also…. With clothing, does that guide also include things like swaddles or blankets? I’ve clearly been over dressing my baby…🥴 but in fairness I was only shown what do to do when bubs was first born and had to be dressed warmly…

I personally think its okay for baby to sleep in a noisy environment. If its quiet, great. If its not, i would rather have an adaptable baby than a fussy baby. Being in public, restaurants, in the car, or having company is going to get a little (or a lot) noisy. If they're tired they will sleep. We fall asleep watching tv, at a movie theatre, in a car with music on and so can baby.

Really awesome video. Great information, I didn't know about the light sleep Emma talks about. So that'll be really helpful. On the noise topic, it sounds like Emma's baby prefers quiet which is probably accurate. 5 days in, our baby appears to fall into the "prefers noise" camp, including loud conversation, shouting, dogs. She sleeps like a rock for 2-5 hours unless intentionally wake her up with touch. Our baby doesn't sleep in a quiet room very well though and wakes up after the 1st sleep cycle. So I'm just acknowledging that variance between different babies.

You can swaddle them with hands near their face! My baby is the same. You can just keep the hand out- it’s better than the statue reflex waking them

Great video lots of great tips thanks❤, I personally still think it’s helpful if a baby can sleep in loud environments. They’re asleep through most of our day and there are many loud public places, I would find it hard to get anything done if mine couldn’t sleep through those noises whilst I was out and about. Plus my dogs are way loud if she woke up to them we would be in trouble 🤣 sleeps through it all and i’m more than grateful for that!

It is worth to consider white noise. White and pink noise facilitating long, deep and healthy sleep are of particular importance for children. There is no absolute silence in the mother's womb. Various sounds reach the fetus - voices, music, and even the sound of flowing blood. Through the amniotic fluid and the specific environment in the mother's body, all sounds that reach the fetus appear as white noise. After giving birth, such a sound makes the baby feel safe and confident. This noise reminds the baby of the conditions in the mother's belly. In the case of newborns and infants, white noise will work not only during sleep. It is also worth using it to soothe and calm a crying baby.

Just want to say that the comment on no one being able to sleep in a noisey room is false as I can sleep better with music going. I can also sleep through many things; I have slept through aftershocks of an earthquake, road works outside my house, my husband playing his electric guitar (usually quite loud as it can be faintly heard outside) and I always fell asleep at family party's. I find it hard to fall alseep and stay asleep in complete silence. I am a new mother now, so I just have a sleep noise app on through the night. The app is recommended for tinnitus. I do love your videos and they are very helpful. I recommend them to my friends when I know they are expecting.

Thank you so much! This was very helpful! I read somewhere that babies should be napping in the light so that they can start to work out their days from their nights and to help with with Serotonin etc. Should I just be putting him to sleep in a dark room all the time?
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
I would recommend you put him to bed in a dark room for daytime naps and night sleeps. When he is awake during the day just make sure to expose him to natural light then. So have the blinds open and go outside if possible.

Hi Emma, I have two babies (twins) who are two and half month old. My babies sleep well during the day time and in the evening. But they don't sleep well at night. It seems they feel more hungry at night and cry for feed after every hour. I follow a regular night time routine but they remain awake till late night. Sometimes they become very fussy at night and me and my husband are unable to understand the reason. How can we make them sleep well at night? Please guide us.

My two and a half week old was sleeping so good and then a few busy days threw us off. She was up for 5 hours in one stretch I rocked her for an hour and a half, refed changed nappy and started all over again and hd to repeat until finally she fell asleep. Now we are still paying for it today and she has only had 20-30 min naps. I always make sure she is back down to sleep before 45mins - an hour, we swaddle her, have white noise and the room is as dark as we can make it. She only got 10 hours sleep yesterday and today is looking worse I feel so bad for her and I don’t know what to do

Each time that the baby wakes, should we be taking their swaddle off and put it back on when they start showing tired cues?
@mathieuclement8011
@mathieuclement8011 3 жыл бұрын
While you feed you mean? I would think the swaddle is a cue for baby that it is time to sleep and calm down, also they do need to stretch and move during the day, so I'd recommend only using the swaddle for calming and sleeping

The love to dream has been fantastic for my little one. She absolutely hated us swaddling with swaddle blankets and our swaddle me sack was awful! Shed squirm and cry and fight to get her arms out, no matter how tight they were in there. I love that the love to dream is a zipper so its so easy to get her in and out without noisy velcro too. But that's just my experience! Butttt im here because the purple crying has been miserable 😢 it's so hard to out her down, she just wants to be held. Or she wakes up constantly after putting her down. She always spits out the pacifier.
