Without a side view, it can be difficult to appreciate the positions a pitcher achieves.
Take Emmanuel Clase, who throws 100+ mph cutters. Here are some of the mechanical factors that stand out and make him so lethal.
✅Subtle drift
✅Drops into a deep hinge with TONS of IR
✅Holds this back hip tension until the last second
✅Arm unwinds in plane
While the side view allows you easy access to see how he uses the frontal plane, the back view makes it easy to see how well a pitcher rotates (transverse plane).
Check out the:
✅Deep flip-up (scap retraction)
✅Hip-shoulder (really pelvis-torso) separation
✅Overall rhythm, using a cyclical leg lift to tie together the drift and hinge phases.
In addition, we need to talk about how he actually throws cutters so hard. Being a heavy supinator, this is really just his natural fourseam shape.
When he stays behind it, he gets a tick more velo and a few inches less cut (like the first back view pitch: 101.4, -3.5 HB)
When he gets more around it, the pitch gets upwards of 5-6 inches of cut but loses a tick as the efficiency drops (like the second back view: 98.9, -5.7HB).
An absolute unicorn pitch that emerged as a result of highly efficient overall biomechanics mixed with some serious supination bias.🦄
