My mom pulled me into the other room made me go outside with my dad because I couldn’t stop laughing (particularly after the Russian Roulette quote). I remember feeling a tug on the back of my sweatshirt when I snorted-telling me to get out of the room. (My parents had a a “Keep you mouth shut and laugh about it on the car later” rule when weird religious stuff was brought up.) @EmmaThorne I think he was able to get away with this because it was before the current laws about prescriptions and narcotics were made. These days, narcotics are tracked much more carefully. The fact that this was the THIRD time; left me wondering about the first two times he got caught! This story demonstrates what narcotics do to a person's thinking! Years ago, my chronic pain issues were treated with narcotics. At one point, I was taking so much that my doctor told me he could not prescribe more without admitting me to the hospital first! So I have first hand knowlege of how narcotics remove your moral resistance to doing things that you should not. It numbs you to the point where you cannot see the potential consequences of your actions. It also muddies your ability to think in a way that you can only discern AFTER you are off of the narcotics! When I went cold-turkey (under medical supervision) to get off the narcotics, I had a day or so of extreme clarity where I could look back and see the difference in my thinking! The thing that shocked me the most was how unaware I was of the problem while I was taking the narcotics! That is one of the factors that makes it so hard for people to quit. They cannot even see the problems that the people around them see. That does not excuse the behavior, it is just a factor that I do not see being talked about very often. Yet it is important for those dealing with loved ones who are addicted to understand why it is so hard to get through to them that they are in danger. For those that are currently struggling with addiction (and pain too) : You can break free with the help of a competent doctor and some of the newer medications like suboxone. These days, my pain is under control (not gone, but reduced enough most of the time to be tolerable). And I no longer have to feel that hunger for the narcotics or worry about my pain meds not working. I also use a combination of the skills I learned from mindfulness training, biofeedback training, DBT, therapy, and other things like that to reduce the effect that pain has on my life.

Just today we were at the Pokémon trading store, and I was remembering all of the neighborhood kids being allergic to Pokémon, feeling aggrieved that I didn’t really know anything about Pokémon besides the tv shows and games my son and I played. I’d never heard of this preacher, but I’m almost certain he’s responsible for making Pokémon a bummer to talk about when I was a kid. I have a plushie charmander named Mr. Mander sitting on my desk right now, absolutely adorable. This does take me back about 24 years ago now when I was told magic and pokemon cards were demonic and i had to hand them over to be disposed of. Things like this pretty solidified anger towards Christianity and people of any faith in me for decades. Took a while for me to allow for the possibility that some people aren't psychotic alt right overzealous hateful bigots. I wonder how many relationships with decent people I could have had if I wasn't so outwardly aggressive to anyone even presenting a mild association with religion. Probably a lot. Looking back I did know good accepting Christians but I just would not let them into my life. And fearmongering over a children's card/video game played a not insignificant role in that. I cannot stress this enough, support your kids, even if you think what they're into is stupid.

When I was a kid I never got a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figurine because part of the Satanic Panic in South Africa was the idea that TMNT was evil. They actually changed all the branding to switch the name to 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles' because ninjas were assassins and thus inappropriate for children. They even dubbed the theme song to say "Teenage Mutant hero Turtles" with the worst dubbing you've ever heard outside of a Fox4Kids show. The 80s was wild I tell you, wild.

I think it was a moral panic over ninjas and nunchaku. Similarly we had a ban on switchblades in the 50s here in the U.S. Didn't they also switch Mikey's nunchaku to a grappling hook at some point?

I actually had a friend that was an exchange student from Sweden in high school and he was trying to download TMNT episodes over a peer 2 peer but couldn't find a ton of results.
