A little correction. It's a common misconception that Emmitt held out but that's not what happened. Emmitt's contact had actually expired. A hold out is when a player has a contract and refuses to play unless a new contract is created. The truth is, his rookie contract had expired and him and Jerry were playing hardball. Emmitt has clarified this himself even though the media continues to get it wrong to this day.

I think what you said about him in small spaces as opposed to Sanders in the open field is exactly what the key to his running style was. He had great swivel without turning his whole body. I remember people always saying he wasn't fast enough. He broke plays and looked fast enough when he did. Where his actual speed helped him was in those tight spaces. Defenders would often think he's not fast then suddenly, he's got 7, he's got 10, he's got 15. It was game after game. Another masterpiece!!! A couple other plays come to mind. In Emmitt’s 100 yard receiving game against the Rams his rookie move he makes a jump cut downfield and it’s like the DBs are on roller skates. Do you remember that run on his own goal line against Green Bay? I believe it was ‘93. He hits the line and there’s no hole so he vaults between them and over their legs and picks up like 10 yards. You know Barry would have bounced that outside and probably gott tackled for a safety. In that same Oakland game on another TD someone misses a block and Ellison flys through and hits Emmitt with a beheading tackle IN THE BACKFIELD!! He just bounces off and Emmitt goes in for the score. So much for Emmitt never getting touched til he was 20 yards downfield. Lol.

Great video TLC. You are about the only bright spot of another disappointing season. Emmitt has always been my favourite player. He definitely knew how to exploit a good block. That last clip of him scoring the touchdown against the Raiders truly shows Emmitt’s skills. He ran right at Novacek who was blocking one raider but also held the other raider where he was in case Emmitt ran straight at him. As soon as Smith cut outside and Novacek was still blocking his guy this also caused Ronnie Lott to not be able to pursue since he had two players in his way. Emmitt was able to use Novacek to block three raiders. Smart and strong goes a long way. Anyways, thanks for another great video.

Its crazy how much people hate in this man. If he played for any other team he would be considered the GOAT RB, but because he played for the Cowboys he gets penalized for playing with great teammates. No one says anything about Rice playing with great teammates and playing longer than any receiver to ever play the game. For 2/3 of Rice's. Career he had at the time the greatest QB to ever play the game and then he had another legendary QB throwing to him in S. Young. And on top of all that he had a legendary head coach build an offense around Rice's strength. Meanwhile Emmitt had a dominant line for around 4 years because after that drugs and car wrecks decimated that line and Emmitt was still putting up ridiculous numbers. When I'm talking about football at work or at the bar and someone tells me Emmitt was only good because of his line I immediately end that conversation because its not worth the headache that comes with arguing to an idiot. Emmitt in my opinion was the best RB of all-time because he showed up every Sunday hurt or not, regular season or playoffs and he performed. You couldn't take Emmitt out of the game. He made a mark on every game he played and was at his best when the stakes were at the highest. Vision, power, speed, stiff arm, blocking, balance, and he was a weapon in the passing game. There's more talented RB's but not better.

If you'll notice many running backs use their right arm to carry the ball which also tends to lead to planting off the right foot. Emmitt carried the ball predominantly under his left arm (why he was able to play through his separated right shoulder, and having his right hand broken wasn't a big issue for him) so he was comfortable going off either foot. His dead arm move he used with his right was also incredibly effective. It wasn't really a stiff arm as he always kind of had it just hanging beside him while he ran. It kind of made it hard to get a clean tackle because he would either slap away an arm tackle, or kind use it to make it hard to get a good wrap up tackle. It also helped him not overbalance so when he's running on his toes and breaking tackles at the same time the right arm just kind of hanging there is giving him a good counterbalance. There could be a whole video of just how subtly deadly that right arm was.

Wow! This is the best sports video I have ever seen! Analysis is well thought out and brilliant. Gives unique insight into the game of football at the highest level. The subject, happens to be my favorite player and my hero as a kid. I could never put my finger on why, I loved to watch Emmitt run. That was also part of the magic of his talent. What was it? Why and how does he move that way and how do you even describe it? It’s poetry in motion, in a game of extreme violence it looks like he’s floating and gliding. When most players cut and quickly change direction, Emmitt’s path down the field were more like a curve or bend, he sometimes cut but mostly it was subtle and also bounced off of defenders. His running was mesmerizing. Your analysis of the goal line play against the Raiders was a Eureka moment for me as you pointed out, Emmitt is largely on his toes. Yeah, he’s on his toes and it’s deceiving to observe because his legs are enormous and powerful and Emmitt is only 5’9. Being on his toes is why he had the optical illusion of gliding or floating as well his intangible characteristics of moving in a matter akin to the grace of Michael Jordan, they are just geniuses of human movement. Your additional analysis of Emmitt’s thought process during a play is equally or more so brilliant and the summation of all this equals the greatest football content on any platform, I have ever seen. I am biased as the subject is my favorite player and the fact that you described what I could never fully understand. Thank you sir, big fan.

It’s simple he and Jerry Rice saw the game faster than anyone in NFL history. Which is why their game speed was faster though others had more physical abilities than them.

@@canaan1294 That's a fact! Rice and Smith to me were always in the same boat. Moss and Sanders were more athletic. But Rice and Smith were the perfect players in all aspects.
@canaan12943 ай бұрын
@ which is why Sanders and Moss struggled in certain areas that required fundamentals. Moss struggled against big physical corners who pressed him at the line like Jason Seahorn| Charles Woodson and Barry Sanders struggled in short yardage and pass blocking If you pressed Jerry that was a TD Emmitt was a great pass blocker and short yardage

@@thelogicalcowboy it’s funny how people trying to rewrite Moss history. He went 26th because he’d been kicked off of two college teams and he was known as mentally weak and a quitter. When he and Charles Woodson faced off in front of NFL scouts Charles Woodson shut him down and he quit in front of the NFL world. They scouted him correctly generational talent but would quit if the corner got physical at the line of scrimmage. That held true his entire NFL career. Moss dominated smaller corners who feared him.

Great video LC. But I’ll say what I’ve always said about Emmitt. What makes him different from all others is his durability. I don’t think anybody will ever break his career yards record because the lifespan of an elite RB is at an all time low. People will always say “well yeah, you don’t get hurt with that line”. But I would argue he got hit harder cause his tackles are coming from incoming linebackers and secondary players rushing in at full speed.
@thelogicalcowboy3 ай бұрын
He also was hit harder because of the competition he played against in the nfc east. Think about this Smith played in arguably the greatest defensive division in nfl history. Taylor 1990-1993 Giants and Strahan 1993-1998 Giants. The defenses of the redskins in the early 90s. The Reggie White Eagle defenses of the early 90s. The Cardinals also had vicious defenses. Smith faced those teams 8 times per year. That's why he was hurt twice as much as Sanders throughout his career.

Great analysis. He looked slow to me when I first saw him. He's extremely intelligent and patient. He's very tough. I remember a safety running from the secondary and timing his hit to slam Smith. He knocked out Emmit but Emmit came back later and ran the same play and ran over the safety. Smith was ready for him. Peyton was my favorite, but you can't deny the greatness of Emmitt Smith. He's very tough. Strong and smart. He had a "spidey sense" or "Jedi" reflexes.

Emmitt loved the toss right because he could read the field and cut back. "I didn't know he could run fast enough to pull a hamstring" Jimmy Johnson.
