Pro level breakdown on Emmitt Smith. I will always remember Emmitt's hold out year 0f '93. He missed the first two games and the Cowboys go 0-2. Emmitt signs and they win 7 straight and go on to win their second straight Super Bowl. Like you said his football IQ was off the charts and he had the best set of intangibles of any player, ever. Epic video, epic breakdown.

A little correction. It's a common misconception that Emmitt held out but that's not what happened. Emmitt's contact had actually expired. A hold out is when a player has a contract and refuses to play unless a new contract is created. The truth is, his rookie contract had expired and him and Jerry were playing hardball. Emmitt has clarified this himself even though the media continues to get it wrong to this day.
@kennyo6582

@@greezythumb I am sure that's true, but after going 0-2 Emmitt got a 4 year 13 million dollar contract. If memory serves I think that made him the highest paid running back.

LC that was an excellent break down of The Great Emmitt Smith. He was not flashy like some of his contemporaries but had ❤️, strong Will, gave 100% and read defenses like a seasoned QB. He made his opportunities by simply following his blockers. To me Emmitt is the greatest running back of all time. Superb video LC I'll definitely recommend it to guy's at church. It seemed to me that in the heat of the moment, Emmitts' brain was sharper than anyone else's, and he was able to see things and respond in a way that made him utterly dangerous. And his consistency...if you get 5 yards a play, you score forever and win forever. It doesn't get on highlight reel', but the fans get to see you in Superbowls rather than just probowls. That is why Emmitt is above Sanders.

Another masterpiece!!! A couple other plays come to mind. In Emmitt’s 100 yard receiving game against the Rams his rookie move he makes a jump cut downfield and it’s like the DBs are on roller skates. Do you remember that run on his own goal line against Green Bay? I believe it was ‘93. He hits the line and there’s no hole so he vaults between them and over their legs and picks up like 10 yards. You know Barry would have bounced that outside and probably gott tackled for a safety. In that same Oakland game on another TD someone misses a block and Ellison flys through and hits Emmitt with a beheading tackle IN THE BACKFIELD!! He just bounces off and Emmitt goes in for the score. So much for Emmitt never getting touched til he was 20 yards downfield. Lol.

The one thing I loved the most about Emmitt was how he finished a run. When a lot of RBs are near the end of a run near the sideline they will jump out of bounds to avoid a hit. Emmitt seemed to always want to deliver a punishment to the tackler and pounded them before being driven out.

Great video and graphic breakdown analysis Prof. LC! The physical conditioning that Emmitt practiced had to be insane. Not only to think about what I'm about to do, but to be able to physically execute it. That combination along with his relatively short stature, made him elusive and then his speed takes over after the jukes and various missed tackles. Emmitt is a living legend.

If you'll notice many running backs use their right arm to carry the ball which also tends to lead to planting off the right foot. Emmitt carried the ball predominantly under his left arm (why he was able to play through his separated right shoulder, and having his right hand broken wasn't a big issue for him) so he was comfortable going off either foot. His dead arm move he used with his right was also incredibly effective. It wasn't really a stiff arm as he always kind of had it just hanging beside him while he ran. It kind of made it hard to get a clean tackle because he would either slap away an arm tackle, or kind use it to make it hard to get a good wrap up tackle. It also helped him not overbalance so when he's running on his toes and breaking tackles at the same time the right arm just kind of hanging there is giving him a good counterbalance. There could be a whole video of just how subtly deadly that right arm was.

Its crazy how much people hate in this man. If he played for any other team he would be considered the GOAT RB, but because he played for the Cowboys he gets penalized for playing with great teammates. No one says anything about Rice playing with great teammates and playing longer than any receiver to ever play the game. For 2/3 of Rice's. Career he had at the time the greatest QB to ever play the game and then he had another legendary QB throwing to him in S. Young. And on top of all that he had a legendary head coach build an offense around Rice's strength. Meanwhile Emmitt had a dominant line for around 4 years because after that drugs and car wrecks decimated that line and Emmitt was still putting up ridiculous numbers. When I'm talking about football at work or at the bar and someone tells me Emmitt was only good because of his line I immediately end that conversation because its not worth the headache that comes with arguing to an idiot. Emmitt in my opinion was the best RB of all-time because he showed up every Sunday hurt or not, regular season or playoffs and he performed. You couldn't take Emmitt out of the game. He made a mark on every game he played and was at his best when the stakes were at the highest. Vision, power, speed, stiff arm, blocking, balance, and he was a weapon in the passing game. There's more talented RB's but not better.

That last clip of him scoring the touchdown against the Raiders truly shows Emmitt’s skills. He ran right at Novacek who was blocking one raider but also held the other raider where he was in case Emmitt ran straight at him. As soon as Smith cut outside and Novacek was still blocking his guy this also caused Ronnie Lott to not be able to pursue since he had two players in his way. Emmitt was able to use Novacek to block three raiders. Smart and strong goes a long way. Anyways, thanks for another great video.

@@thelogicalcowboy it’s funny how people trying to rewrite Moss history. He went 26th because he’d been kicked off of two college teams and he was known as mentally weak and a quitter. When he and Charles Woodson faced off in front of NFL scouts Charles Woodson shut him down and he quit in front of the NFL world. They scouted him correctly generational talent but would quit if the corner got physical at the line of scrimmage. That held true his entire NFL career. Moss dominated smaller corners who feared him.

Great video LC. But I’ll say what I’ve always said about Emmitt. What makes him different from all others is his durability. I don’t think anybody will ever break his career yards record because the lifespan of an elite RB is at an all time low. People will always say “well yeah, you don’t get hurt with that line”. But I would argue he got hit harder cause his tackles are coming from incoming linebackers and secondary players rushing in at full speed.
@thelogicalcowboy
@thelogicalcowboy 24 күн бұрын
He also was hit harder because of the competition he played against in the nfc east. Think about this Smith played in arguably the greatest defensive division in nfl history. Taylor 1990-1993 Giants and Strahan 1993-1998 Giants. The defenses of the redskins in the early 90s. The Reggie White Eagle defenses of the early 90s. The Cardinals also had vicious defenses. Smith faced those teams 8 times per year. That's why he was hurt twice as much as Sanders throughout his career.

I think what you said about him in small spaces as opposed to Sanders in the open field is exactly what the key to his running style was. He had great swivel without turning his whole body. I remember people always saying he wasn't fast enough. He broke plays and looked fast enough when he did. Where his actual speed helped him was in those tight spaces. Defenders would often think he's not fast then suddenly, he's got 7, he's got 10, he's got 15. It was game after game. Yeah, it's been a long time now but today's fans really missed out on 2 great backs in that era.

He knocked out Emmit but Emmit came back later and ran the same play and ran over the safety. Smith was ready for him. Peyton was my favorite, but you can't deny the greatness of Emmitt Smith. He's very tough. Strong and smart. He had a "spidey sense" or "Jedi" reflexes.

I remember seeing him at the old stadium. He would be 1.5 to 2 ft off the ground parallel to it and still gain another 3 yds. Those legs would just keep pumping and would not stop until he hit the ground. People say he had a great line, but everyone in the stadium knew he was getting the ball. They would stack the line and he still produced 100 yd games.

Emmitt was the great back you wanted something that today Dallas doesn't have. The offensive line to stay on those blocks while Emmitt got to the second level. You had someone like Moose who was the perfect lead blocker for Emmitt. A majority of Emmitt's yards came inside. He was an inside runner. He did very little toss plays that went outside, even Jimmy said that in an interview. Also Emmitt's build since it took the 3rd or 4th guy to take him down. NO ONE is going to touch Emmitt's all time record. The current threat is Derrick Henry and he is 30. He has 10,622 yards. Emmitt has 18,355 yards. The only way Derrick Henry beat's Emmitt's record is if he plays until 36 and averages more than 1,300 yards then maybe that happens.

@thelogicalcowboy I've been paying attention to the Washington Commanders since I left the Cowboys after more than sixty years. I've had a few doubts about the Commanders during their first year, but for a first year rebuilding almost the entire team of players, coaches and management they're doing great. I assume you've noticed. They remind me in a few ways of older cowboy teams under Landry and two years of Johnson. They are currently the opposite of Jerry and his old style , ex Packers coach. It looks to me that the Commanders are headed to the Division Title, the playoffs and at least one playoff game win. Which puts them ahead of 25 years of Cowboys. I could be wrong. They are definitely a breathe of fresh air. LC. Take care of yourself. I have thought of you many times. However, you are repeating your previous topics. Like Smith and Hayes. You need fresh material for your channel. Later friend.

@@PlanetEarth3141 Thanks for responding friend. But I'm confused. I only did one video on Bob Hayes in my entire KZbin career and it was the one that I just put out a few weeks ago. Also, this is the first video that I ever did about Smith's running style. I did other videos that highlighted his best season or a game that showed how he captured the rushing record in 93 but I never put out a video about just his technique. I think you're confused lol. You've been gone for a while so let me get you caught up on the recent content. I've done documentaries on Dorsett's entire football career starting from high school, I broke down Tom Landry's offensive philosophy, I did documentaries on Charlie Waters, Dez Bryant, and Erik Williams's most vicious highlights vs legendary players, I made my all-time historical defensive team for the Cowboys that can play in any era, I broke down 2024 regular season matchups with the browns and the Saints and gave my observations, I highlighted Roger Staubach's 1979 year. Highlighted the 1980s decade and Tony Romo's 2014 season. I talked about Michael Irvin's dominance against the Cardinals and did documentaries on Troy Aikman, Also a video explaining why Aikman is underrated, and I did a life documentary on Roger Staubach. I did a video on Tony Hills career numbers analytically, and I highlighted the career of the underrated Frank Clarke. I also highlighted the top longest runs in Cowboys history. I know this is a long post. But it's meant to be. Have a blessed day brother.
