Interesting story about lamb and mint... It was during the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) that the English wool industry fell into decline, partly due to a greater consumption of lamb and mutton as food. In order to arrest this situation, the Queen decreed that Lamb must only be consumed with bitter herbs (to put people off). It was not long however, that people discovered that mint (classed a bitter herb) actually goes quite well. 400 years later, it has become a British tradition.

The fresh mint sauce eaten with lamb is a mixture of chopped mint, malt vinegar and sugar. It's a "liquid with bits in" rather than a "jelly" as such. You can adjust the sweet/sour balance by varying the sugar content to taste. You can buy it ready made as well of course. My mother used to serve something called "fresh pickle" with cold meats, particularly lamb, which was basically onion rings soaked in malt vinegar, sugar and spices. She'd make it a few hours before the meal, then leave it covered in the fridge until it was wanted.

Hahaha. That was fun! Asda is pronounced as one word, 2 syllables AS DA (or dah/duh based on our accent lol)... so it's not a s d a. Understand the confusion :) They are owned by Walmart! And yes! Growing up we had many neighbourhood "corner" shops that would sell some essential groceries (milk, bread etc) as well as pick'n'mix and ice lollies and regular old bagged sweets too! Oh... and the daily news paper of course! They still exist but my childhood doesn't :(

The traditional pick'n'mix nearly died out in the UK, but there's a company (maybe more than one) supplying them as a franchise now, so all these little "Granny's Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe" places have sprung up. Kinda fake in a way, but the sweets are pretty authentic, at least as far as I can remember! Of course that made the supermarkets jump on the bandwagon, so several of them have reintroduced pick'n'mix counters as well.
