I often use a cook pot called "Barocook", a three part pot using a flameless heater pack, that uses water to cause the reaction. It's made in South Korea, and uses quick lime. Basically the food in the upper steel pot is steamed. It works pretty well to warm food, but cannot cook raw meat. 😊 A very similar concept to this system but more robustly made. The ten-pack bag of heater pouches (50 grams and 80 grams variants) aren't cheap, but do work well. 👍

These packets would be fantastic for hurricane relief. My elderly parents were stuck with no electricity or water for six weeks. There was no way to reach them. I would have been much more relieved if I knew that they had something like these.

Yeah but at like $8 a piece, I think they would have been better off with a simple propane burner, one of those little ones where the bottle clicks into place. Something I do think about getting sometimes because my heat and stove are electric
@x.y.73857 күн бұрын
@@skeetsmcgrew3282yes, like that propane (?) stove Emmy uses. Stock up on canned food like soups and meats like chicken or beef, minute rice, dehydrated vegetables just for flavor because they have minimal calories. Butter(fat) stays well unrefrigerated, meat sticks. Good quality fat is important to stay satiated. In an emergency you want nutrient dense/healthy fat foods so you aren't hungry all of the time

Have not heard of these self cooking meals before. But, years ago I did try a coffee drink that was self heating. It came in a tumbler like container. Don't remember all the steps but one thing you did was to turn it upside down and wait several minutes then it would be ready to drink. It was hot but I didn't care for the flavor which was just personal preference. I haven't seen them since. But I thought it was a great idea, especially for someone on the go.

I do wonder how much fuel or electricity ends up being used to make the (relatively-innocuous but power-dense chemicals) that provide the heat. Then again, in some circumstances it’s definitely worth it. Some of these just use calcium oxide (quicklime). That’s usually made by heating calcium carbonate (releasing carbon dioxide and probably requiring a fair amount of fuel too). Adding water makes calcium hydroxide, and releases a lot of heat. A LOT. Apparently the usual MRE reaction uses magnesium with a little iron, plus table salt: adding water releases heat from the reaction, but people complain that it’s not very hot. Calcium hydroxide can be a bit corrosive but it’s not especially soluble in water. It also can absorb carbon dioxide from the air to produce calcium carbonate. This is how whitewash (largely a calcium hydroxide solution/suspension) works: repeated whitewashing builds up a relatively tough crust of calcium carbonate on a surface as the whitewash takes up carbon dioxide.
