Here is some additional information on Ren's story, in case you didn't already know. I gathered it from an old newspaper interview and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales in 1990 or ‘91 (depending on which source you cite), he grew up in Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which lead him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). Ren's Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Let's keep supporting Ren and not pull a "Sony" on him as he undergoes his treatment. Check out and subscribe to his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

@@nickforell1 This above comment by @Jens Randolff would be a very good comment to pin at the top of the comments. And maybe also pin a comment with just the go fund me link. I watched Hi REN straight through tonight when it crossed my feed, having no idea who he was or what is was about. Blew my mind. Then I watched Sick Boi. Another mind blower. Then went to his channel and watched 5 more. Then…watched this reaction video of yours. Really appreciate your inputs…and your work. I did hear/understand more going thru it again with your inputs. I knew at the beginning of your review as you started commenting on the guitar…that you were about to go on a journey you didn’t expect. You got it right away before he even switched voices. It’s a lot to integrate listening the first time. With you on those deep breath pauses. This song is profound. I’m glad you asked people to give more info on Ren. Now I know. It's not strange to me... the drive to survive is a fundamental part of all living things. It is at the very core of our nature, and when we are confronted with a person in so much pain and turmoil that this most base instinct is overridden, we struggle to process it. How could they do that? It is so contrary to what we are, that we don't even want to acknowledge it, even if it is right there in front of our face. This is how people can miss the obvious signs until it is too late. At their core they want to believe it is not even possible and if they ignore it, it will go away. Of course, that only makes things worse. Well, that's my opinion, anyway.

Honestly, an Oscar for best acting wouldn't be weird either, the way his whole demeanor changes in half a second between the negative and positive side of himself is really astonishing, and he's doing it live, while playing the guitar which also switches in tone between the positive and negative side AND he's really experiencing every single one of the words he says or sings AND those words are ridiculously well put together. And brave. And he has brain damage? I have to stop now before my inner Nurse Ratchett starts giving me grief for not doing more meaningful things with my life.

There is a moment after Ren has delivered his message of hope that you can see The Beast try to assert control again but instead of fighting it, Ren takes it's energy & turns it into an incredible unique vocalization that I can only describe as a "scream of hope". This is extremely sophisticated & highly proficient art delivered with an honesty so genuine it makes you feel physically uncomfortable.

I think the last part of the song, before the spoken monologue. Where he is singing, dancing and the lights are flickering is a representation of him learning to dance in the chaos, loosen up and just go with it like he explains at the end. I haven't heard anyone mention that in a reaction but that's my take. Because before that moment the lights only flicker when his dark side is speaking but at the end, it's the positive side singing, the music is more upbeat, the lights are flickering because his dark side is still there, but he is dancing freely and has learned to move with it.

It made me think about revival celebrations; it’s the natural joyous shout after such powerful testimony for eternal humanity as he does, and of course fits the thematics of dark vs light and singing hallelujah at the end, so to speak.

Ren is a Poet, a Singer, a Rapper, a Musician, a Composer, a Songwriter, a Producer, an Actor......an Artist. Keep going down the Ren rabbit hole, there's literally nothing he can't do. This video is completely LIVE....No pre-recorded music and lip-syncing here. Don't miss out on the fact that Ren was also in a band...."The Big Push". They too have lots of videos, mostly of Busking (street performing). Ren needs all of our Thoughts, Prayers and Love right now. At 17, Ren had been discovered by Sony Records, Busking in England. They signed him to a contract and he was on his way. As he was recording his first album, he got incredibly sick. He went to the British doctors, complaining of severe pain all over his body and in his joints. The Doctors could find nothing wrong with him and insisted that it was all in his head. Ren spent the next 8 years of his life, looking for answers, going to hundreds of different doctors. The medical community kept saying it was ALL in his head and treating as much, with Psycho-Active/Tropic drugs for his "Mental Disorder". Meanwhile, Ren was stuck in bed 23 hours a day because of the overwhelming pain. All of this nearly drove him crazy as he KNEW he was experiencing the pain that they said was made up. A few years ago, he found a Doctor in Belgium that finally diagnosed Ren with Lyme Disease. He had his answer. However, because the Lyme disease went untreated for 8 years, it Ravaged his body to include his brain. He even received Stem Cell treatment in Canada a while ago, but the damage was already done. He is currently BACK in Canada, for 6+/- months, to try and repair some of that damage. This will include multiple surgeries. He is there by himself, without friends or family to comfort him through this grueling ordeal

Its never missed, I've noticed it is the one point in the song you physically see a gut punch in almost every reactor. The song is very emotional, and like myself most people who listen will truly listen to it, most reactions barely pause it is so captivating. But that line, is when you will see almost every reactor, look away, take a noticeable breathe, its a hard hit. Most people know that line personally, they understand that part of Hope, which is why it resonates, but its also something no one wants to talk about, because you have to reach a point, not just doing an act that brings that part of hope forward, but even just the thought, its the darkest place you can go, and when you come back to it, you know you felt it. So when its brought to the foreground, people will get it, but like I said, its a taboo to talk about. I even havent said in this comment, because Im sure most people know what im talking about.

“Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 5 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of his songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard. His trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion. It needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. It has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. Ren recently released his single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. As mentioned above, his latest release, “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” is another masterful work.

From what I have read, he was misdiagnosed as Bipolar plus other misdiagnosed illnesses, when in fact he had Lymes disease. He was treated with drugs for bipolar which caused psychosis and other side effects. He is well known around London (Brighton) as a busker, he was also part of a band called The Big Push, they have so many live videos available and are incredible. He does have a GOFUND me page to help with his medical bills, on his own page. Personally, I think Chalk Outlines Ren + Chinchilla would be a great second review, followed by some of his live performances, also, "The Trilogy" of Jenny, Screech & Violets Tale, is a must. He is often referred to as the Bard of London.

I've posted in a lot of these reaction to Ren videos. This song, in particular, changed the way I see life, it has changed me. That final verse, knocked me off my feet. Every time I listen to it, I can feel myself processing years and years of stress, that I haven't been able to put into words, still can't really, just beating myself up, expecting too much. But I am in a much better place now, thanks to Ren. I had pretty much given up, autopilot, just existing. I cannot explain what has happened and how this song has changed me, just that it has, maybe it came around at the right time for me? Whatever, I would love to tell Ren exactly how much I owe him. We all have a dark side, we all fail to meet expectations, sometimes. We are all sometimes disappointed in ourselves. Fighting against something that is intangible, that for the most part, doesn't exist. I have always had 2 sides to me, darkness, selfishness vs generosity and kindness, fighting the dark just makes it more powerful, accepting that it is there changes it, it makes it controllable. This probably sounds nuts, but that's where I am at the moment.

This was a great reaction. I really liked your outlook on it. This is one very real young man going through unimaginable things and at the same time touching millions of people. At 17 he was bitten by a tick and contracted Lyme disease. It was misdiagnosed for 7 years and he was given psych drugs. At one point he was bed bound for 23 hours a day from the pain. Lyme disease is a horrible thing. Gone untreated absolutely creates extreme mental health issues. He is now in Canada receiving treatment for the disease and the damage that it's caused. Now, on to this masterpiece. This here is something incredible. It's not the guitar work, lyrics or even the amazing performance. The most incredible thing about this, is what is going on out here in response to it. I have seen reactors as well as people in the comments section coming forward with intensely personal stories of their own struggles and how they are coping each day. Reactors are telling folks to get help if they need it. Even offering resources to do so. This is so relatable to people in all walks of life. We all have inner struggles and demons. Whether it's doubt, self esteem, addiction or mental health issues. Because of this, there are people who are reaching out saying that they felt alone in their battle. To find a massive amount of people saying that exact same thing. Proving the point a falsehood, the way no words can. People are finding a connection to an unexpected place. Each other. It's truly a wonderful thing. So much so, that I want to shout it out from every rooftop that there is. I think that with just this one song, he has proven his own words true. He IS a genius and the waves that he is creating are tsunami in scale. His music may just be more important than he could ever imagine.

18:10 - It's the same internal chaos that the song started with, but this time it's not oppressive. It's not going to go away, all he can do is to accept what he has and make the most of it.

I fell down the Ren rabbit hole on You Tube a while back and this is one of the best reactions I have seen so far. A bit of background - Ren was mis-diagnosed when he contracted Lyme's disease when he was young, and over the course of a few years his health and body continued to deteriorate to the point where he is in pain every day. My understanding is that he did have a record deal, but the label dropped him when the mental health issues made it impossible for him to conform to the requirements of making an album. He is currently in Calgary getting treatment for the actual illness, and I am not aware of any updates about how that is going. I am sure we all hope that he recovers to the greatest degree possible, knowing of course that this will be a very long road for him.

Love you actually bringing the psych background into analyzing this. I've been saying that as a victim of a narcissistic abuser that the "devil," is a narcissistic persona. There is no winning against a narcissist in an argument. You watch how the attacks gradually create his desperation and combative responses in the "normal side." The moment you start yelling at the narcissist is when you lose. They now blame you for getting angry even if they have been insulting and nasty for hours. It is all about breaking you down and making you see them as the only thing you have. The moment he yells about killing himself is when the evil takes over...he lost control. Oh...also the only time the lights flicker while on his "good" side is right before he falls to the devil and is yelling back...perfection. Terrifying to see how well the acting displays this. The ending, as someone who escaped the abuse, resisted a third attempt at suicide while being pursued and trying to escape, who has found herself and come out of overwhelming self hate as a trans woman at last and found a future I have hope in. I cry every time listening to this no matter how many times I hear it.

Which is why you can't just lock that side away, that voice does have its purpose. I see that final segment as him integrating both his light and shadow. He's still speaking with the tone of the hopeful side of himself, but using the assertiveness of the dark side to bring power and confidence to his words. Before that point the hopeful was timid and defensive. And when he's singing at the end the lights are flashing, which previously only flashed when the dark side was speaking. It's not light triumphing over the darkness, it's light integrated with darkness to make a whole, empowered human being. I love the message behind that, it's something I really needed to hear.

I battle with serious illness also... it is sooo difficult, it would be easier to end it all... but it takes more courage to stay and suffer. Every thing in this video is so carefully thought out. He plucked the guitar harder when he was on the evil side, softer on the other. The lights flickered on the dark side. He is a genius and this is a masterpiece!!!

Ren is also in a band, The Big Push from Brighton, UK. All friends and song writers and started busking there. His music so diverse but so good. Pure Genius that touches his health and misdiagnosis. From covers to rap to awesome videos he has so much to give.

I appreciated your insight on this video. I'm nearly 40 and this song resonated with me in a way no other music has before. I wasn't able to put my finger on why that was. Yes, I've struggled with my mental health since my adolescence but plenty of artists have tackled the subject. What you said...that this video is brave hit the nail on the head. His vulnerability in a world that is unkind to those showing "weakness" (especially male bodied individuals) is nothing short of a revolutionary act. I've shown this video to a couple of others and while they appreciated the artistry, they didn't get into it in their reactions. Thank you for your react video. It helped me process my own feelings on this. I'll be checking out more of your videos in the future. Nice work.

I always enjoy it when experts brings their knowledge and insight into their reactions. To me, the artist already tells us everything we need to know, but experts do backup and confirm this. We can see that Ren is really good and that he’s revealing his own true story. And, we realize many may see themselves in his story, as well. Your point that we can’t handle such issues on our own is very important. Always seek help. Thank you for you fine reaction.

Brilliantly articulated through poetry and music. Much respect to Ren. I hope his treatment helps him both physically and mentally. One thing another reactor pointed out that I never picked up on watching the video, is that the lights always flicker when the “dark side “is speaking. They do not flicker when Ren is replying back. Just an extra part of the production that subconsciously had impact. I very much enjoyed your reaction especially given your career.

Ren was misdiagnosed for 10 years as M.E. & Bi-Polar & medicated & then subsequently self medicated. But he has Lyme's disease, it has affected his auto-immunity & this has also massively affected all aspects of his health for which he is now in Canada getting the correct treatments. He was discovered by SONY/UMG (they may strike for copyright they don't own by the way), but they dropped him when he showed signs of pyschosis. Ren's brain was damaged by the Lymes & Autoimmune issues which did affect his reality at times. He's definitely on the road to recovery & much better off. I'd love you to check the following Ren songs, Crutch, Insomnia, Depression, Diazepam, How to be me, Ready for you. Most will point you to his other songs which are rap based which are also amazing. This video was 1 take (4th attempt), many of his songs are live one take (The Tale of Jenny & Screech full is a three in 1 video which is a must-see). Glad you got this... would love your take on these.

Ren is suffering from Lyme. He literally spent 3 years in his bedroom in so much pain. It’s been over 10 years that he’s been dealing with it’s affects. The Lyme severely affected his brain & he was misdiagnosed as Bipolar. 5 years ago he made a video from his bedroom about how sick he was and how he didn’t think he could live much longer. He was in his late 20’s and looked like a young teenager weighing under 100lbs. He had also developed MCAS & could barely eat. A Dr in California saw that video & offered him free Stem Cell Transplant Therapy. That therapy was what turned things around for him. For the last 5 years, he’s been able to function, make music & perform. It didn’t cure him though. He is currently in Canada where he is getting further treatment of daily IV’s, breathing treatments & other things. His natural artistic ability seems endless and his catalog of music is so worth the rabbit hole! He posts updated and when he does, they’re written like poetry.

If you would share this with your co-workers, it would help to drive home feelings of empathy and increased awareness of the inner workings of the people for whom they are responsible for care. That’s my suggestion and it would be in line with REN’s message.😊

Ive watched several 'reacts to' videos of this song and you have been the quickest to understand, the quickest to cut to the meaning without waffling and fumbling for words. I think we are very lucky for your observations on this one. Ren as an artist is sublime and Ren as a human is inspiring. I think the reason people are reacting to this in such a visceral way is not only because we have experienced versions of this ourselves, but we recognize that as below so above. We are dealing with this kind of threat from an existential plane. The world is going through what Ren is acting out. We feel it. We combat it every day in the headlines, in our conversations with our friends, with ourselves. This song now, is a parallel of our greater reality. Like the quantum level connection with the universal. I think Ren (the artist performing for us here) has used his internal struggle in such a way as to illustrate and educate us on how to deal with the times we now find ourselves in. And on an emotional and psychological level, he also gives hope to the individual. Thank God for Ren. And thank 'all that is' for you, Nick.

I'm not a particularly judgemental person or one who thinks in absolutes, but in the last few years I've been increasingly feeling that humanity is is going through an enormous battle between its best and worst aspects, which, as you say, may explain why so many people are having visceral reactions to this song (including myself - I was crying from about 4 minutes into the song the first time I heard it).

A small personal observation, I see this as a play in three acts, followed by an epilogue, Act One -The Introduction: Ren is wheeled in, weak and feeble playing music without confidence but it is for a better word, "happy place", at this point we are introduced to the second snide controlling Ren, who is pissed because the drugs and treatments are shutting him out but he knows he can always come back. Ren does not talk for himself, "my therapist says, (for me the saddest phrase in history) shows he has not yet healed enough to fight back. The exchanges are teasing and almost comical, ("fuck you, you should be so lucky") and Ren's voice is more pleading and unsure. However towards the end of the act, Ren is finding his feet and stating the things that give him hope, which angers evil Ren, who points out, that if he wants to rid himself of his evil inside, the only choice is death. Act Two - The Battle: An existential fight between good and evil and life and death. Chaos is control and he who causes the chaos or can controls the chaos, wins! The tempo of the exchanges become more frantic and vicious, as both Ren's try and fight for survival or dominance , and the arguments take on a Shakespearian dynamic and the evil Ren getting more spiteful and grandiose, as he realises in music Ren has found salvation, The increased chaos and final scream of "Ren", is him knowing he is being banished and has (for the moment at least) lost his power over the musical, stronger, healing Ren. Act Three - The Victory and Release: Ren exhausted but victorious shuts out the voice of evil Ren, and chooses to listen closely to the music so closely his ear is next to one plucked note, and finally when Ren talks and plays he is doing so with his own calm, confident voice, He is no longer speaking to his banished demon but to his new self, his carers and us, the audience that has been willing him to be well and with every word his confidence grows to the point of release. He lets us know how close to the rope we can all take it but in his victory we are all can find "hope" and/or the strength not to self destruct. The final refrain from his earlier, "happy place music" is now joyful, primeval and gloriously euphoric, Ren is free to be one Ren. The Epilogue: Powerful, poetic, poignant and honest, it speaks for itself and is inspiring and humbling. Feel free to disagree or agree, we all have our own psychosis and that is, "what makes us human" Thanks for a thought provoking reaction, so much more in this but I have rambled enough.

@nickforellreacts he wants to stay independent so he can do the music he wants. No record label is going to let him put out the types of things he writes about. Think that's why everyone has been really trying to support all his music because it definitely needs to be heard. Chalk Outlines is a must and another walk down the mental health alley and so beautifully done. It should really be on the radio everywhere

this has been the best portray of mental illness for me. I lost my mom 15 years ago to suicide from bipolar. Im 36 now, and while she was going through her struggle with it, I hated doctors for always trying to change and play with medication for her. it just messed her up more. at the time though, I believe she was able to finally beat that demon and end it for the both of them, and not let the demon come out and effect her daughter and me. thanks for sharing!
