Just was a painful scene and her heart was in the right place and she learned the hard way that there was probably a better way to go about it. Dad Beat Dad is a bop the entire way through. Lucifer is in my top favorite characters. I can relate to him in many ways. I recommend watching Georgia Dow's character analysis for some interesting perspectives on the characters from a professional. I'm so glad you went back and watched it. The "Yes, Valentino" scene is so extremely powerful. Not only does it show how broken he is, but it really contextualises how he yells at Charlie. He will obey Valentino and let himself be abused, but the moment Val says something about Charlie, Angel hesitates and tries to redirect Val. He wanted to protect Charlie at any cost, knowing he would be the one to pay that cost in her stead. (I recently watched a therapist analysing Angel Dust's scenes, and apparently that kind of resigning yourself but protecting others or driving them away is extremely common in victims of chronic abuse.)

You misunderstand. Angel doesn't care what Valentino does to him. Angel was harsh with Charlie because he feared for Charlie's life. He knew what Val might do to her if pushed too far and he knew that "being mean" to Charlie was probably the fastest way to get her to leave the studio and away from danger. So it had nothing to do with Angel saving his own skin. Rather he was being protective of Charlie in his own way.

One thing I think that gets glossed over a lot is Angel doesn't understand how powerful Charile is. Intellectually yeah its obvious she could probably wipe the floor with Val. But he's also terrified of Val, and with that kind of mental trauma you start to see your abuser as more powerful than they are. Angel genuinely believes Val could hurt Charile, he wanted her out so she wouldn't get hurt as much as not wanting her to see the things Val is about to do to him

I think there's also another reason Angel doesn't want Charlie to get into a fight with Val. Even if Val loses....Angel ultimately loses. Val has complete ownership on Angel's soul so anything Charlie might do to Val....Val can do worse to him later.

His mindset was clearly forced on Charile’s safety while being blantantly uncaring and accepting of his own lack of safety. His eyes glance to the door before Val even slams it, he doesn’t flinch until the first hit. It’s all still within the realm of normal for him, and his last line before leaving the room is focused on Charile and Cal leaving her out of any potential future punishment Angel knows will happen.

Charlie wouldn't kill Val (and maybe she wouldn't even physically harm him bc we saw various times she really isn't a fighter, she can but it's very difficult for her and ultimately couldn't even kill Adam), so her just fighting with Val would not only do nothing but make it worse and getting Angel abused, maybe even killed (although to me that is just words to manipulate him bc he seems too obsessed with Angel to kill him). Also possibly killing or hurting his family like he threatened him with before, there I don't think he would hold back.. But then he wouldn't stop her for his well being bc he showed he doesn't care what happens to him since he is used to it and it will happen regardless bc of the contract, it would be another reason to stop her simply bc he knew it wouldn't work unless she killed him. Also saw another person pointing out that in the improbable case he was just harmed, it would also cause a war with the other Vees and their workers. That part I'm not sure if Angel thought about it but still, overall he knew nothing good would come about it.

Part of what makes Val terrifying as an abuser is he CAN show respect to people who aren't under his direct control. He's savvy enough to know who he can hurt and who he can't. So yes, he'll smile at Charlie and schmooze with her, but Angel is his thrall so he's not afraid to knock the hell out of him. This episode is hard for Charlie because she's starting to realize there's darkness in The Pentagram that she wasn't prepared for and it can be solved with a song and a smile. Angel realizes Charlie really is willing to step up, and Charlie learns how bad the situation really is. Because that's the problem...sometimes WANTING to do a good thing doesn't equal actually helping a situation. Every Sinner has different damage and part of Charlie's journey is learning you need nuance and you can't slap a universal band-aid over every Sinner's trauma. HI! Also! I love your videos! I have psych degree, work in trauma informed care, and have volunteered at a domestic violence and sexual assault center for years. Charlie, while her heart is in the right place, crossed a /lot/ of boundaries here; showing up at your friends work without asking, /not leaving/ when said friend practically begged her to, messing with said friend's work environment, and finally trying to confront the boss/abuser of friend. Now, obviously she didn't know Angel was being hurt by Val going in, but when she realized, she shouldn't have confronted him head on. It's natural to want to protect your friend, but /any/ intervention in an abusive situation has to be done with 1) full consent of the survivor and 2) done as subtly as possible until the survivor is in a safe enough place. On top of this, Val is using a very common manipulation tactic on Angel. Angel is terrified of Val and has an extensive history of violence and fear with him, so he's horrified at Charlie being anywhere near his abuser. He's not thinking "she's the princess of hell, she can handle it". He's thinking "she cant go through what I have! I won't let her.". Val is preying on this by using Angel's fear to manipulate him into chasing Charlie out of the studio. Angel yelled at her in a desperate bid to get her away from the person he's terrified of most. He even begs Val; "I'll tell her to leave! Just don't hurt her!". Abusers like Val want their victims 1) isolated and 2) dependent upon them. Charlie showing up here was threatening to him because Val felt like he was being challenged on every level; work (with her suggestions), personal (she's higher ranking than him), and in his control over Angel (her wanting to speak with him about Angel). This made him crave regaining control, which is why he threw Angel around in the dressing room and reminded him of "his place". He then got Angel to chase away one of his only branches to a support group outside of Val himself, meaning Angel was back to being isolated with Valentino. Charlie did the right thing to leave when Angel yelled at her, btw. Her presence was only escalating the situation, which would just lead to Angel getting hurt later. I love how this episode really portrayed the conflicting shades of grey that happen in abusive situations. Anyways, I want Val dead lmao. Sorry for the essay! I just LOVE the complexity of this episode so much!

I do want to mention that Angel has spent this whole time acting like he loves his job. So nobody, except Husk, at the hotel likely realized how Angel was being treated. It doesn't excuse Charlie not leaving, but it does explain why she went imo

She did the best she could with the info she had, and I blame a lot of her struggles with whats appropriate here on how isolated it seems shes been aside from having Vaggie for three years. Charlie's fantastic because she can admit when she was wrong and then proceeds to adjust her behavior, apologize, and commit to educating others so they don't make her same mistakes. Where the reactor is just like "Oh, I'd definitely apologize for this later" being projected onto an expectation for what the character would do. The thing I love about the choreography of Poison when Angel is dancing, it's a depiction of the disassociation. The disassociation is him dancing around happily, and yet reality bleeds through as his dance moves are literally abuse he's experiencing in the moment. That's why there's camera shots that come up behind him of what is actually happening to him in reality. And then Val comes into the disassociation and pull him right back out of it into his reality.

The 2nd chorus instead of the belting the song out is now screams in pain and self loathing. The whole thing is fucked up and yet absolutely a masterclass of animation and storytelling. They push it right up the the bleeding edge of just showing it all and pull back letting your mind go to the worst place. Worst of all they gave us that song a few days before the episode. So we all loved it and had it on 72 hours of repeat. And then we all felt dirty for liking it. Rilliant.

Nah, Charlie's 100% wrong for inserting herself into Angel's worklife. She realizes that herself by the end of the episode and notes needing boundary training. Angel's living the same way he has in hell for who knows how long. He knows Val can't die without using an angelic weapon, and as long as Val is alive he literally owns Angel. Charlie can't change that, not without fighting all of the Vs and starting a turf war - exactly the kinda of thing she speaks against. She can be sweet, but incredibly naive about how some things actually work in hell.

I seriously hoped she'd have a bit of a wake up call from how much shit she got angel in. He's not gonna tell her what Val did but the fact that after HER stunt he got pulled into a private room and then came out distressed, beaten, and being dragged. She's got such tunnel vision she borders on delusional but one would think her friend being directly hurt because of her actions would've made her sober up a bit. Also wished her apology was less focused on how upset she was. (PS, Val seemed to be in a decent mood, bantering with Angel about the shit dialogue. i agree. she has good intentions, but in many cases interfering in that way between the abuser and the person being abused can cause even more problems for the abused person. theres not a scenario i cant think of where she could help him unless, like you said, starting a turf war. and saying that angel should apologize is just wrong, yeah she tried to help but she overstepped boundaries and cause more problems for angel ,not only him getting physically assaulted, but val making him work the whole night bc of the incident. since valcantcontrol angel outside the studio, there was no other outcome when she tried to help him in thestudio where he has to listen and obey val no matter what.

He shouldnt have to apologize for wanting Charlie out of a dangerous environment after literally getting beaten and having his life threatened by a psychopath. He was as kind as he could be to Charlie multiple times beforehand, he told her she couldn't do anything and to leave to discuss the situation LATER, but she didn't trust him and wasn't aware of what he was going through. Abuse is hard for people to talk about and just tell people, so i can't blame Angel for not being upfront with her about it. Charlie learned about his situation, or at least a gist of it, and she realized she overstepped her bounds by intruding on his workplace when she didn't have the full picture of how serious Angel's boss is. Imagine a social worker coming into your home and telling off your abusive husband, but they didn't remove you from the house or make you legally/financially independent first... so you're NOT safe. Now imagine rudely telling the social worker to leave because you know your husband is about to get even more violent. Do you REALLY think it's the social worker who deserves the apology? ​@@liucarr9764 (forgive me, it's a pet peeve that people use this term not knowing what it comes from) Pollyanna syndrome - extreme optimism in the face of adversity - is coined from an old children's book that teaches kids to endure abuse, not seek help (because children's rights and protective services didn't really exist over a hundred years ago). The titular character Pollyanna was an orphaned child who had to go live with her abusive aunt, NOT a young woman who grew up sheltered and privileged. Her intense optimism (the Glad Game where she focused ONLY on things to be grateful for) was a coping skill she used to deal with her crappy life - modern readers might call it dissociative behavior. In the end she's even temporarily disabled (can't walk) seemingly to teach her/the reader that 'life could always be worse, so don't complain'. The unfortunate message of the book is that if you pretend hard enough that you're happy, and respond to every abuse and hardship with irrational gratitude, then it will teach people to be kind and care about you. 'Kill them with kindness', 'turn the other cheek', 'if you love people enough, you can change them'. Barf. Did Vivziepop say Charlie grew up sheltered and isolated? Because the show doesn't say it, and the only thing I've heard from her is that Charlie went to college and has an ex boyfriend. Not exactly Rapunzel in her tower.

She isn't innocent, she's naive to the point of tunnel vision and is often delusional and the fact that everyone shelters her makes it worse. She caused a dangerous situation for Angel, that lead to him getting violently abused all night and her apology was akin to a child that's been caught drawing on the walls. And STILL she has the, I know better, I'll just go in and talk things over attitude. Like anyone working any job would be frustrated if their friend showed up, said they were going to talk to their boss to get them time off work then caused an accident on site that stopped business. Angel owed her nothing, but he'll always forgive his friends cause he's just loving like that.

You know EXACTLY why Angel was so desperate to get Charlie away from Val when you learn that his saliva is a powerful and addictive drug and aphrodisiac. When Val licked Charlie's arm he was trying to roofie her. He can deliver it through spit or through the red smoke you see him create but thankfully Charlie is immune because of her bloodline. It's how he gets so many people to sign those damn contracts and likely how he trapped Angel, himself. Angel knows that Charlie is too soft-hearted to ever kill someone and the Vees would take advantage of her pacifistic nature to seriously hurt, trap, or kill her. He's trying to keep her safe and willingly taking the brunt of Val's anger and sadism for her. It's also true to abusive relationships that you should NEVER confront the abuser unless you know damn well sure the victim won't be in that situation anymore because every scrap of annoyance or anger the abuser feels is going to passed on to the victim WITH INTEREST. Charlie bulldozed into this thinking she could solve everything with "aggressive kindness" but Angel was right, she just made it that much worse for him. He suffered HOURS of abuse to save her.

But when Val starts threatening Charlie, Angel begs him to spare her. He doesn’t care what happens to him, but is trying to protect his friends the only way he knows how against someone who, in his mind, is the most powerful and terrifying entity in his life. It shows the depth of Angel’s strength that he doesn’t even know he has yet. It’s a powerful moment for him in a sea of terror and pain.

Yeah it’s also a pretty common trope in porn for a smaller performer(granted Angel is literally 9feet tall) to be paired up with a group of much larger performers to emphasize a size difference and extreme power imbalance. It's really unfortunate that Charlie's first attempt at standing up for her friends happens for an entrenched abusive relationship. Something that even professionals struggle to untangle. You need a Deft Hand to get someone out of something like this from the outside. As much Oomph as Charlie might be able to put behind any threats she makes, she doesn't have the experience needed. Particularly when Angel copes with his lack of control in his life by leaning in and telling himself he likes his job. So first Charlie would have to break through that, which would leave Angel Worse Off in the short term, before working on getting him out of his contract, sober from Val's aphrodisiac, and out from under his emotional control. Charlie doesn't even know about 3/4 of those steps, let alone have the know-how to do that safely.

So the thing about Angel and just victims of sexual abuse in general is that they use sexuality as a coping mechanism because: 1. They don't want to think of themself as a victim, so acting sexual essentially gaslights themself into not seeing themself as the victim 2. They turn to sexuality so that they can feel in control of it after their autonomy has been stripped away from them as a result of the abuse 3. Being more sexual makes the sexual abuse feel less unbearable physically even though it still very much hurts on an emotional and mental level Angel's using sexuality so he can feel like he has even an iota of control over his life. Many times victims of sexual abuse still remain very sexual and flirty after they've gone through therapy because it's become so ingrained into their personality that it's just an subconscious thing at that point, even if they no longer actually have sex or only have sex with one person or a select group of people.

this episode is where my respect for the artistry that goes into the show really grew. first there was the juxtaposition of the lyrics "i disassociate, disappear" followed by a chorus where angel appears to be enjoying himself but the flashes on the background screens show how in reality he's being brutalized in the scene he's filming. the slick dance MV shots aren't real, they're angel disassociating and going somewhere else in his head - but reality keeps peeking through, until val brings the whole illusion crashing down. then again with the sound design, not just in how val squeaks like an actual moth when he's mad or husk can be heard purring, but note that hissing/chittering noise when angel snaps at husk, similar to how some spider species stridulate (there's some cool videos on youtube). then there's the way his second set of hands is wringing and stroking themselves when he's on the phone with val... there is so much detail that goes into every second.

The reason why Angel flirts so aggressively and is always hooking up with people is because that is how he defines his self worth. His value in hell is as a sex object, and as long as he can make everyone desire him he feels as if he matters. It is also his why of taking back some level of control. During his shoots with Val Angel is a literal slave, unable to disobey even the smallest of Val's commands. When Angel is on his own time his is able to do what he wants and by doing the very same things Val FORCED him to do on his on time, of his own volition, it gives Angel some small level of control over his own life. Honestly, this episode is THE episode that made Hazbin a great watch because everything after this just goes up. The first three episodes are good but I could see people being like, "Meh" BUT THIS EPISODE IS A FUCKING BANGER. 2 Phenomenal songs, a character going through a trauma arc, another character trying to fix stuff the wrong way while another character does it the right way, some legit fantastic shots, great choreography, and best of all the voice acting is perfect. Blake Roman better get some huge VA roles after this because he's so good. I can't state how much of a 15/10 episode this is. The thing is that Angel is trying to protect Charlie, not himself. You can see that when he begs Valentino not to hurt her. Obviously, Charlie would be more powerful than Valentino, but you have to think of it from Angel’s perspective. Abusers frequently take on a larger than life image to their victims when it comes to their power. He is trying to save Charlie by pushing her away before Valentino can dig in his claws. Edit: I think Angel flirts so aggressively because he is trying to control the narrative of his own sexualization. Like, it’s not okay and he is sexually harassing people. One detail I love in this episode is you can see every time Husk takes Angel's hands Angel immediately gets this wide-eyed bewildered look that my friend calls 'the gay panic expression' whereas Husk at the beginning his pupils are really narrow every time Angel is pushing his boundaries like a cat dealing with something they dislike, but by the end his pupils are dilated wide when he's looking at Angel like when a cat is seeing something they want. There's really subtle physical signs of how they feel about each other and I love it.

42:33 I know him only having one set of arms during this sequence is an animation error and knew it was the most likely explanation but when I first noticed it I also wondered if for just a brief moment Angel was feeling more human than he ever had since dying and his appearance dropped one of the more noticeably non-human traits he had with this form. Idk if anything motivates a more human or animalistic appearance on a soul but seeing as when Angel got really pissed about Husk calling him fake the 6 other eyes got more apparent, I’d imagine when he feels more like his actual self or a human again, his non-human traits would end up downplayed. But like… I do accept it as an animation error… while also thinking that it is a pretty nice moment if it were a case of feeling genuine human connection and being understood for the first time in decades since dying. It’s a good place for this specific animation error. Haven’t seen anyone point out the lack of one pair of arms either so wanted to say something on it myself.

What points to animation error is that when you get to the last shot when they’re back to back is you can see the shoulders f the second set of arms BUT… ray could ALSO be an animation error. I think at e seeing the storyboard of the sequence might answer the question tho. With a show that as such detailed animation even for background characters, I CAN see the second set of arms getting lost, especially with a background bust enough I haven’t seen anyone notice it in the reactions I’ve watched (and I’ve been watching A LOT). But I do like to think it’s intentional since we really haven’t gotten any info on what motivates a Sinner maybe having a more or less human appearance, only that their appearance is a reflection of their soul and how they died. However like I said, I think that seeing how they get more monstrous in appearance feeling more negative emotions (mostly in anger so far) it does make me wonder if it works in the other direction. Either way, it’s. smart move to establish Angel’s extra arms are retractable. :y

The thing is, you cant just go and confront someone's abuser and expect there to be no consequences for the victim unless you're actually going to *end* the abuser somehow or get the victim away permanently. Abuse victims also begin to feel like their abusers are all-powerful - Angel was trying to *protect* Charlie when he told her to leave, not only from witnessing the abuse, but from what he subconsciously assumed Valentino, despite being merely an overlord, could somehow do to Charlie. He knows consciously that Charlie, being the daughter of Lucifer, probably could take Val on, but nobody was really thinking clearly in that moment besides Valentino.

I think you're in love with Charlie a little too much hahaha. I love her a lot too, but you can't stop looking at her bad qualities either. Charlie is the walking form of 'privilege' who thinks very black and white about good and evil and despite living in hell, can't really see what's going on with Angel. His problems aren't as simple as: get clean from drinking and drugs and sex, because those addictions usually start from different problems. Like mental illness or in Angels' case, abuse. People use substance abuse to deal with the physical and mental pain, which just feeds the cycle, making it worse. But Angel Dust can't just simply 'invest in the hotel' and that will fix all his problems. They're rooted much deeper than that. Just like the studio scene. Charlie was very much in the wrong the way she went to talk with Val. Just coming there 'for Angel' put Angel Dust in so, so, SO much danger. And I know it was an honest mistake, because she doesn't understand the full extent of Val and Angels' abusive relationship, but the way she did it wasn't good. So IMO she was the one who needed to apologize (which she did, so she's all forgiven for that in my eyes). I hope for s2 Charlie starts to learn that she can't just bibbidi babbadi boo it all away and everything will be okay, no matter her good intentions. These people (or demons in this case) have actual problems with deeply rooted trauma and pain and addiction. Just my two cents on it :) Loved the reaction!! Can't wait for the rest!!

I think the main reason Val was avoiding being aggressive with Charlie directly is because her dad is one of The Sins. Overlords may be strong, but even they don't want that kind of smoke.

23:05 disagree as well, Charlie is well intentioned but if it were real life, Charlie would've 100% made things worse and the consequences for Angel would've been so much worse, as much as Angel needs help, Charlie pushed too far too fast and was too naive She said it herself she didnt respect his boundaries... And even after all that all Angel wanted was to save her, get her our of there, I think Angel thanking Charlie for trying was definitely the best way to respond, if he apologized it would've implied Charlie did the right thing and as much as i love her, she didnt, she was too naive and didnt read the room at all, it's too dangerous to do what she did :/

One of the head cannons about this episode is where, in Poison, Angel is dancing and the clips of him in the background: he's disassociating.. the shots of him in the background is what's happening irl, but he's doing what he loves to escape mentally. Val intruding into the dancing is him being snapped out of it, and into reality again 😢
