He is alive because he is a perpetual. In short they are immortal humans that wield immense power. Whic compared to rest of the perpetuals he is on another level of a being. And don't forget the daily sacrifices that fuels him daily.

@@vShadie He isn't dying not in the sense of normal human at least. He is stuck at this weird coma that makes him regenerate and die every day in short. Golden throne sucks energy like no other. Only reason he doesn't get up because if he does warp travel is gone and the demons beneath the terra opens an another great rift like no other. That means birthplace of humanity is gone. And he doesn't want that. In theory ıf imperium did let him die he would just regenerate in short periods of time. Thats why Russ looking for Tree of Life in the warp.
